The Smart Ape Theory As Explained By Jack Barnes Will Make You Feel Dumb
Let's see-- What is the Smart Ape Theory? We just finished listening to 7 minutes of what the FB/FB guy (Jack Barnes) had to say about their theory and this is what we "think" it is: Basically, humans are in the process of dumbing down because we work in larger groups, and as a consequence, makes us less intelligent. Since Sasquatches are born into smaller groups, and their brains are much bigger, they are potentially smarter than us. Did we get that right? Ahhh.. nevermind, we'll just buy the book.
Here is what one person thought about their theory:
Huh. The Smart Ape theory sounds ridiculous. It doesn't take into account any evolutionary science, it doesn't take into account the discoveries that brain size is not entirely dependent on intelligence, and it doesn't take into account the glaring fault in the theory - humans, as social as we are, are the most intelligent species on the planet. They can be just as forest-savvy as any Sasquatch, given the right upbringing. Look at native tribes in S. America and PNG. Ridiculous!

DeleteAll that proves is a very small amount of people are hiking deep in the woods or swamps looking for a creature with such a low population that they may not exist. Now take that population and spread them out across 4 million square miles.

Something equal to or smarter than us that was also bigger and stronger than us? nature would have selected for them to be running the show. That's a silly thing to say and shows NO knowledge of evolutionary biology and the way evolution works.

DeleteThis is how nature works, if you are better at survival, adapting to environments and creating efficient ways to do your tasks, than another animal you will be dominant over it. If you add in a brute strength increase as well, you will end up with a dominant animal, end of story.

You missed the whole point ( maybe he is right in your case)! He is saying ththeory are more intelligent in their environment . Throw a hundred humans in the wilderness and see how the survive on instincts. We are losing that type ( not engineering type of intelligence) of smarts. We are losing that type of natural intelligence on survival. We rely on large groups .

ReplyDeleteI am always facinated by the stories of these "wildmen" in the 17 & 1800's. People back then understood, they were working, farming and exploring everything this great continent had to offer. They were out in the bush and actualy saw these creatures!
Today........as much as people think.......with technology and cameras, we should be seeing these "primitive humans" all the time. But, the fact of the matter is our society has turned to greed, and with greed and capitalism we are NOT allowed to enjoy and spend time in great outdoors like our kin could 150 years ago................................wow..... what we have done in 150 years!
We have become so detatched from what life is, was, and should be in the future. We have set boundries as a society that is so unattainable by so many. We want people to work, and make other people richer. Why?
You would think that with all the knowlage we have gained as a "species" on this planet, that we would have learned that every other "high society" before us......... has been wiped out! Why not learn from this, and realize, we are "species", an "animal", that has the cabability that no other animal has had before........................... lets use it to our advantage......................not for us, but for everything that was not made like us.

ReplyDeleteBrain size itself is not as important as the ratio of body mass to brain mass. I'm pretty sure that is the measurement people who think about these kinds of things use. The other problem is that its believed communication and grouping heightens intelligence. "Universal MInd", and all that jazz, comes to conclusions and the individual absorbs them. Anyone who bets on football games and understands how point spreads works believes this. Many games come close to the "number", and sharpies play middles. Thats how we got the name wiseguys.

ReplyDeleteWhen I saw the title, I thought I had better check this out, because I haven't felt dumb in nearly a week, at least not since the recent Supreme Court Ruling (I guess that would technically be "dumbfounded", though). After reading the intro, and then listening to the video, I realized I had fallen victim to the extreme sarcasm in the title, designed to pull in folks like me and many of those who have posted already, no doubt. Really, it is not far off the mark from a claim that Mr. Barnes and his compatriots have made about their hypotheses (Their use of the word "theory" is in error, which I will show directly) and book as well: "It will make any skeptic look naive and uneducated. Your friends will have no answer for this book." - excerpt from the promotional video for The Smarter Ape Theory, the book.
The difference between a hypothesis and a theory in science is:
In the most basic and simple terms, a theory has been extensively tested and is generally accepted, while a hypothesis is a speculative guess that has yet to be tested.
