Dr. John Bindernagel's imposters, readers beware (Updated)

Dr. John Bindernagel, Wildlife Biologist

When Dr. John Bindernagel posted this comment regarding the "leaked" Bigfoot DNA study, we were quite surprised. We were so gleeful that we decided to do a post about it (later removed).
Many of us have waited a very long time for this and knew the day would come.

Posted by J Bindernagle to Bigfoot Evidence at Thursday, December 8, 2011 10:08:00 PM PST

After doing some investigation to verify if this was really him, we discovered a few things.
  1. He misspelled his own last name: Bindernagle
  2. Multiple imposters were using his good name to comment on a number of our articles (we've deleted these)
  3. Bindernagel have never posted a comment on Bigfoot Evidence.
This was confirmed when we received a response from the real Dr. John Bindernagel himself.

Hi Shawn,

Thanks for the heads-up. You are correct in that in I did NOT post that comment. I repeat that is NOT from me.

Many thanks,
John

What are we going to do about this to deter other imposters from trying to ruin someone's good name? We've implementing a method to log the IP addresses so that when we receive any complaints, we can forward the imposter's IP to the actual person.

Update: There was a comment about the Dr. Bindernagel post we removed yesterday. We realize that things can get out of hand quickly if we didn't address this conversation:
For those of you interested there is a post on the boards related to Jim LeBus that claims Shawn made up the posts by Dr. John Bindernagel in order to get people to read his blog.

This is a serious allegation that must be addressed and cannot go unanswered. Shawn has to tell us the real story. If the poster is lying then Shawn has to take action and slap him into his place. I think this is designed to test Shawn and to see if he will go toe to toe with the old guys.

We haven't checked the boards, but we believe what they're talking about is Bigfoot Evidence making up Dr. Bindernagel's comments to drive traffic? We will never do this because we don't have to. We get enough traffic without having to make things up. We get so much traffic from many of articles here that one article about Dr. Bindernagel isn't going to make any difference in traffic. When we found out that the comment from Dr. Bindernagel wasn't actually from him, we were happy to delete the post because we don't need politics getting involved.

  1. Freaking awesome! Some of those anonymous trolls better think twice.

  2. I was there, and did I want to believe the news!
It started out clever, but deteriorated quickly and seemed to be designed to somehow endorse a particular amateur type BF YouTuber type website!
Probably everyone's tip off it was not a PhD writing!
I personally hope their incredible bad taste and dishonesty will revisit them in kind....tut, tut.

  3. Shawn,

Don't you think you should have checked the spelling of his name before creating an article called "The Most Powerful Quote of the Day" and thanking the esteemed Dr. for stopping by?

J Bindernagle is not the same as Dr. John Bindernagel.

  4. We wanted to believe that it was him so bad that we thought that he misspelled his own name when he signed up his username. Wishful thinking gets the best of us.

  5. I hope you know its more than about a website. If your passionate about this topic then you have to get to where you never see what you want to see but what is actually there. Think about all the people who do see bears but want to think its a Bigfoot.

What would the perception of Bigfoot be by the public if they only had the best evidence rather than the clips that show what the person wanted to see but turned out to be something else. That is how misidentification remains alive.

Its not just you many people were showering comments on a name spelled similarly to someone in the Bigfoot field.

  6. Keep up the great work Shawn. Its a real shame that some people have to stoop to that level. I don't understand that mentality of trying to use/ruin another humans identity. Not only John's, but also your livlihood you are trying to make for yourself. Take care.

  7. If Apehuman continues to post I simply can't comprehend how anyone could criticize what is some of the best research today on the Moggollon Monster. Arizona gives us legitimate evidence and not pictures of ferel hogs, black bear, and the back of a hunter

  8. Its nothing to LOL about. You would be well served to check out the Youtube Channel- one of the best rated on the site- to learn more about how to conduct research that will yield evidence.

The quest for the Moggollon Monster is the best search for the creature on the internet. Mitch Waite sets the bar for amateur researchers and you should aspire to be like him.

  9. Shawn, it's a credit to you that you took the time to investigate what was going on and attempt to remedy the problem. I know you are trying hard to keep your website credible and I know you'll succeed.

  10. I dont think anyone could have predicted anyone would have concluded that a letter and an incorrect spelling of a last name would cause Shawn to conclude a man with a PHD would misspelled his own name, and then link it to a quote from 1998 and for him to then post what amounted as a tribute to Dr. John Bindernagel.

There was no first name no mention of the word doctor in the name or post and the last name was not spelled as the good doctor spells it. How on earth would anyone think that would happen???

One thing is certain- one day people will point at Mitch Waite and say "there goes the man who proved Bigfoot existed".

  11. Anonymous above me: I think it was an honest mistake. It looks like Shawn is a one man show and I'm pretty sure Bigfoot blogging is not his day job. I've seen worse mistakes made on the front page of the New York Times. He even gave the DR. a heads up about what was going on, what additional proof do you need that Shawn feels bad about his mistake?

  12. He should not feel bad- but he also should not feel targeted by Bigfoot politics. Paul wants to paint it as an attack on him when that is not the case. He made a mistake and one that was very funny.

Apehuman started pouring her heart and soul into messages to a post that was obviously not Bindernagel. If someone intended to really cause trouble and hatch a large scheme wouldnt they make sure to spell his name right.

  13. Odd Anon posts here, looks like someone is trying to use this site to advertise their own. I think I saw a story on this group yesterday, right after the Bindernagle story. 3 comments.

  14. Does the subject of bigfoot occasionally intrude on these threads, or is it mainly just homo sapiens flinging dung like this?

  15. We used to talk Bigfoot but then Bindernagle got us off topic.

  16. or, Mitch Waite hard to tell the difference.

  17. Mitch does not have the time to post here. He is the top hunter in North America- he blows away Timbergiant and Fasano. He is not on message boards but out doing the things we only talk about.

  18. This entire forum is anonymous, as I stated before, so no one can be taken seriously. Why attempt to be so appauled over a users comment on a site which allows anonymity? It's ludicrous. I enjoy reading the information posted on this page. Most of the readers are intelligent and supply great food for thought. Real scientists would not waste their valuable time posting on a faceless page. No offense please.

Real scientists can't post on pages like this because that is not what they do. Its not ego or arrogance but the fact there are certain times to discuss things and the rest of the time people can refer to their written work.

I agree I dont see why there is anger when the whole thing was funny. Like you say you learn alot here. You read everything and then dismiss the bull and think about the other stuff more if you like.

This forum needs to be anonymous or else many wont post. While not taboo this is a very misunderstood topic and people who dont understand it make the wrong assumptions about those who are interested. It would be more trouble than it is worth if it were not anonymous. In addition, many who research in their spare time would likely not post any other way- because they just dont want people knowing what they do on their personal time.

I don't like what appears to be a clear animus towards Mitch Waite- Ape Human does not like him and when i wrote a complimentary post it was removed. So much for presenting all opinions.

This is what I see happening. Shawn wanted to be impartial and objective. Ape Human cozied up to him and for whatever reason feels ignored by the Bigfoot community and knows she is not taken seriously. Now rather than him taking a side that is well known- she has gotten Shawn to choose her side while he still thinks he is being objective.

  20. @JB There's been a few spammers here lately. Which one was your comment? I can bring that one back if you like.

  21. I wont pretend to be privy to all bigfoot politics- Apehuman is on a list of people prohibited from having any affiliation with the BFRO. Her "evidence" is not shared or passed along within the community. People refuse to do this and there has to be a reason why.

Dr. Bindernagel's name was misspelled yet a tribute was still constructed- after apehuman loudly sung the poster's praises. I wonder who convinced Shawn to make that post?

  23. Thanks Shawn but it's not needed. I am pleasantly surprised at the level of maturity and open mindedness of you posters. The net is full of the dregs of electronic amoeba but this page has some how weeds out most of the headaches, and seems to keep it all on track. Thanks Shawn.

  24. shawn, you should make a post about ways to improve this website, possibly go for an entire new approach/layout.

then everyone can comment on what they feel would be good.

i do like it, but i also feel it could be plenty better. but, like the blog it is, it definitely should stay focused on the main news articles that you are so great at providing.

  25. Amazing, people commenting on Bindernagel here even spell his name wrong. ;)

  26. You do a fantastic job with the site- but I do agree perhaps a different format may be best. I dont suggest any changes other than how it is organized and think it would be much more fruitful if the website was broken down and news organized by region-

The news could be organized so there is a section for the Skunk Ape and Southeastern sightings, the Ohio Grassman, the Sasquatch of Canada, the Pacific Northwest and then Texas and Oklahoma. Also a section for scientific news with large stories like the Erickson report broken down in a subsection that has all the articles related to a subject in one place from newest to oldest so all the information on a certain topic is available in one place. I found your site while researching the "Sierra Kills" story but really had to hunt for all the related articles because some would come up under some article and then others under different articles.

I suggest this for the following reason: Look at the Ohio Grassman- I believe this the most interesting Sasquatch type because of the fact it seems to live closer to humans than all others. Someone in the area interested in studying the Grassman would be well served if the site was like this because it condenses relevant info. Take nests for example- different locations have different landscapes and if a person sees southern and northwestern nests they may not have the right impression of what to look for in Ohio because different building materials may be used because of an abundance in that location vs others.

Additionally you dont hear about Sasquatch outside the Southeastern US leaving 3 toed tracks or being extremely aggressive. If a person in the Northwest suddenly finds evidence close to their property they will likely head to the net to gather information. A person with a job and no background in Bigfoot will likely not spend months on the research but do a quick search. If they view southern 3 toed tracks first they may dismiss what they have seen as a hoax because of the 5 toes. Many are also worried about the killing of Bigfoots- you would do a great service by breaking everything down to where people know it is very unlikely to be attacked in the Pac Northwest but evidence indicates this may not be the case in other areas. You would serve people well by breaking down that there seems to be different levels of danger based on region with the inbreeding theory as one possible explanation why.

I have long believed one reason reports are dismissed or evidence not collected is because the person who discovers it will do a search online find information not applicable to their area but assume all are Bigfoot are the same and then right off the evidence as something other than what is is based on this preventing what may be valuable evidence from being widely known.

Your site is widely read and you may be the first to beak things down like this and can even write your own summaries on each section highlighting the major differences based on region. If I had the time I would do this as it seems information like this is rare. If one were to only examine skunk ape evidence rather than all evidence they would likely discovery small things indicative of sasquatch in this area that have gone unnoticed because all sightings and evidence is normally examined with an eye on finding similarity rather than differences which will likely make it easier to gather new evidence. Essentially when different regions are compared those things specific and limited to only one region are ignored. For example natives planted wild citrus tree groves throughout the everglades- narrowing the examination to only Florida may reveal that all sightings are within 3 miles of a wild citrus grove and these areas are where the creatures reside. When you add evidence from the Pac Northwest you really cannot do this. Coastal areas in the Pac West are abundant with clams and shellfish- this food source will cause different behavior than areas that do not have such a food source and can show important distinctions.

  27. AND
I have seen stats which talk about the average height of a Sasquatch- this information is useless as the creature is reported as being much smaller in the South and in China and much larger in Canada. Someone who may not be a skeptic but also may not have a reason to believe may dismiss a sighting because what they see is too large or too small based on misleading statistics.

If you have time research the rattlesnake in North America. The rattlesnake was originally found throughout the United States and is a native species like the Sasquatch in this regard. Then look at all the different species and different traits. Western Diamondbacks often will strike with a dry bite with no venom- the Timber rattlesnake will not do this. Species vary from region to region and you can help identify different traits and behavior based on region allowing for better and more specific research that will likely lead to better evidence.

One thing I have noticed is hunters, trackers and researchers often track Bigfoot as they would another animal and look for universal signs with some specifics- they use general methods instead of those specific to the region because these have been difficult to identify.

  28. Fascinated, I enjoy your posts but I have to disagree with you at this time. I love it here because it is easy to navigate now, maybe in the future. I guess it depends on how much time Shawn has and how far he's stretched in life. This is a good site.

Fascinated You have some great ideas and suggestions. Perhaps if Shawn needs help with the site you could help and do just as you've suggested and done above. I have always enjoyed your posts and was so glad when you changed from anon because I did not have to weed through the anon posts figuring which one was yours. You present well with your written style and form.

Shawn there's some good suggestions here but only you know what you can do. Once you get past the juvenille posters there are many valuable posters opinions and comments here. Some commenters have brought nothing but grief but more have brought common sense and reasonable posts.

All of the above is my opinion only so that's it just an opinion but I really like this site and when it expands Fascinated has some good ideas.

Thanks Shawn for this site and your due diligence!

  29. Shawn, I appreciate your hard work with this site ... it is a MUST-READ every day. Hell, a must-read every hour -- it seems like the content is constantly coming in! I don't know how you do it, but it is COMPLETELY understandable that honest mistakes happen with the amount of posting. But the great and constant updates here are what make this blog the most exciting one on the net. And you did the right thing in contacting JB to double-check.

    Thanks!
