Are The Wild Men Tales Of 1904 Oregon True?

Stories of "wild men", described as bigfoot-like creatures, date back for hundreds of years in the Pacific Northwest. One of the most famous of such accounts is the wild men of Myrtle Point Oregon, of 1904.

In 1904, the wild men of Myrtle Point Oregon were introduced to readers. This news article is interesting but the account that follows is fascinating and provides a glimpse into the Sasquatch.

At repeated intervals during the past ten years, thrilling stories have come from the rugged Sixes Mining Company district in Coos County, Oregon near Myrtle Point, regarding a wild man or a queer and terrible monster which walks erect and has been seen by scores of miners and prospectors.

The appearance again of the “wild man of the Sixes” has thrown some of the miners into a state of excitement and fear. A report says the wild man has been seen three times in a month’s period.

The Wild Men Arrive.
The first appearance occurred on “Thompson’s Flat.” William Ward and a young man by the name of Burlison were sitting by the fire in their cabin one night when they heard something walking around the cabin, which resembled a man walking and when it came to the corner of the cabin it took a hold of the corner and gave the building a vigorous shake and kept up a frightful noise the whole time.

This was the same whistling that has so many times warned the venture-some miners of the approach of the hairy man and caused them to flee in abject fear.

Mr. Ward walked to the cabin door and could see the monster plainly as it walked away. He took a shot at it with his rifle, but the bullet went wild of its mark.

The last appearance of the animal was at Harrison’s cabin only a few days ago.

Mr. Ward was at the Harrison cabin this time and again figures in the excitement. About 5:00 a.m., the wild man gave the door of the cabin a vigorous shaking which aroused Ward and one of the Harrison boys who took their guns and went to do the intruder in…

Ward fired at the hairy man and he answered by sending a four pound rock at Ward’s head but his aim was a little too high to the gratefulness of Ward.

He the hairy thing disappeared into the brush. Many of the mines avowed that the wild man is a reality. They have seen him and know whereof they speak.

They say he is something after the fashion of a gorilla and unlike anything else that has ever been known; and not only that but he can throw rocks with wonderful force and accuracy.

The wild man is about 7 feet high, has broad hands and feet and his body is covered by a prolific growth of hair. In short, he looks like the very devil.

The Sixes river is located in southern Oregon, not too many miles north of the border with California. In the same region the following account provides a closer look at the mysterious wild men of that region. The creature was called the Chetco monster and sometimes referred to as the Chetco Indian devil.

  3. Well that was quite the story. For generations the Chetco Indians knew of these beasts. Said they were neither human or animal, they were neither friendly or hostile, best just to leave them alone which the natives did. Now comes the white man determined to wipe out the forest with horrendous machinery and guns for protection. Something surely the forest giants of this area had never seen before. They do not like it and instead of moving on, try to drive the foresters out with intimidation. Foresters are determined to drive them away and in turn some of them get taken out in a most horrendous way.

Was this story sensationalized. Perhaps and a good possibility. Was it based on some actual events - probably. Today we just do not have these kind of encounters that end this way. Have the forest giants learned to just move on and let the humans go about there business, - it would seem so. The Native populations co existed with the forest giants for thousands of years. Just let them be and we can also.

"The Chetco Indians believed there were man-animals in the woods, the logger informed his friends. He had heard the story from a white man whom the Indians trusted enough to take into their confidence. They claimed that for generations they had shared their hunting grounds with fierce-looking hairy creatures that walked upright like men. The strange beings were not human, nor animal, neither friendly nor hostile. They were simply there, like every other man or wild creature, so the Indians left them alone."

    20. Joe speaks of sykes studying walla walla hairs, as if he knows sykes personally and has even the slightest scientific clue. But im not suprised. Im sure sykes would love to walla walla all over joes face.

      Delete
    21. And how can you tell us that Joe with confidence and state it like it is solid fact. You werent there. You have no idea if these workers made it up or if they were mistaken. Nor do you have any first hand knowledge about the dna contained within any such hairs. Once again, you are taking details about events, twisting them, citing them as fact, and then claiming them as your own. You have no clue what these hairs are from, nor do you have any clue what the so called government workers actually saw/did.

      Delete
    22. The Walla Walla hairs were attained on an instance where three government employee (one of them being Paul Freeman) verified by Dr Paul Fuerst of Ohio State University & the Oregon Regional Primate Research Centre to be of an unknowns primate. The hairs were collected by the three forest rangers at a sighting where tracks were accumulated too. Dr Frank Poirier, chairman of the Ohio State's department of anthropology confirms this. These were later confirmed to also be be case by Dr Fahrenbach;
"I have by now a dozen purported sasquatch hair samples, all morphologically congruent (which rules out hoaxing) and all effectively indistinguishable from a human hair of the particular structure (great variability is available among the latter). DNA extracted from both hair shaft or roots (hair demonstrably fresh) was too fragmented to permit gene sequencing. That characteristic is also sometimes found in human hair that lacks the medulla (as does sasquatch hair - at least what I am willing to identify as such)."
      ... However, Sykes got a hold of these, and;
"Eventually I found a match in a rather obscure database from Central Asia. The Walla Walla sample matched an induvidual from Uzbekistan! How on earth could that be explained. I have not had long to think about it, but my immediate thought is that I find it very difficult to reconcile this result on the Walla Walla hair with the impressive provenance provided for it by Paul Freeman and his companions. The Walla Walla hair result is the most intriguing from among my North American samples. I scarcely think I can claim to have identified the sasquatch as a feral Uzbek, but that is the closest I have managed to get at the moment".
      - Dr Bryn Sykes, Nature of The Beast
So it is here, considering we have hair samples that have uniform morphology verified by multiple experts, as we do with biological dermals verified at the same frequency, that we are at a stage of research that points to an unknown primate leaving its sign.

      Occam's Razor.

    24. Why do you refer to the scientists involved as "we" Joe? You arent involved at all, nor are they on any side you are on. It has also been stated by man that Freeman was a hoaxer. In fact, if im not mistaken, freeman admitted to hoaxing tracks. But he is certainly clouded in controversy. So it really is no surprise that his name comes up. And again, you have no clue what those rangers saw/did. You are just repeating the accounts of others. Might as well recount a tim fasano sighting. Its about as credible and sounds every bit as convincing.

      Delete
    25. The books Bigfoot of the Blues or Walla Walla Bigfoot (both authored by Vance Orchard) go at length regarding the Sasquatch in the Utimala range and Mill creek water shed areas, both were visited by Paul Freeman about five times a week after his encounter as a forestry worker. There are at least 15 to 20 people local to that area who had encountered Sasquatch, four of these became friends to Freeman and followed up on sighting reports and footprints. Any way, Freeman stated he made a fake track to see if indeed he could duplicate what they were finding and what this showed was a faked track could not achieve the same kind of movement shown with flexing over rocks and curling toes into mud and sticks.

Actually, the DNA study by Ohio State's Department of Anthropology is pretty well known. I also have a great clue as to the credibility of the sighting because, well... Um... They got hairs and tracks?

      (Pfffft!)

      Delete
    26. The same tracks that freeman purposely made fakes to try and imitate. Yet you put credibility in this man. When the average person, or above average person for that matter, thinks they see a bigfoot or a bigfoot track, the last thing in there mind is going to be and try and see if they can make a fake track, and then go to legnths, such as wood carving, and molding to make such a track. People only go this far when they are either getting paid to do it, or are doing it for a hoax. Yet you don't think like this Joe. Instead you put complete faith in the man because of a piece of footage that shows some blurry figure walking. Thats where your faith comes from. Not from some alleged hairs or tracks. And those hairs will come back as either a known species, or contaminated with human dna, just like they always do.

    28. "It was almost ten years ago that I was visited by Paul Freeman and his wife, Nancy. The occasion was an interview for a TV show that was being produced by a documentary crew from Manchester, England. Part of my contribution to this project was to bring Paul Freeman to my place for a taped interview. Later, the crew would pack up and head into Portland for the next interview with Henner Fahrenbach in my middle school classroom. The English production crew was kind enough to allow me to tape both interviews 'over their shoulder' so to speak, using my own home camcorder. Only a few short clips form these two extended interviews were ever televised in their show. The rest of the interviews ended up on the cutting room floor. My copy of the interviews, on VHS tapes, just sat in a drawer for then next ten years, along with my tape of the discovery of the Skookum Cast. The other day I finally got around to reformatting these old tapes to a digital format. Despite the generally poor sound quality of my tapes (my fault) I was amazed by value of reflections and recollections that were offered by both interviewees, Paul Freeman and Henner Fahrenbach. The material on these tapes was as useful as it was ten years ago. I put the tapes up on Youtube because it struck me that anyone who ever has tried or will someday try to gather 'bigfoot evidence' needs to hear every word of these interviews. There is a huge amount of personal experience and 'hard gotten gains' presented in these old tapes.

One interesting element of these tapes is the fact that the English reporter who interviews Freeman has really done his homework. He knew the controversies that Paul was embroiled in and he did his best to get Paul Freeman to articulate his position on the accusations of hoaxing that swirled back in the 1990's. The biggest flap surrounded comments made by Freeman on a "Good Morning America" appearance. He acknowledged "trying to make" a set of fake footprints. Freeman explained to me as we chatted at my house before the interview that his remarks were taken out of context. He wanted to create a set of deliberate fakes for comparison purposes. He never tried to portray his fakes as anything but an experiment. But by acknowledging on camera that he had 'tried' to make fake footprints, he created a dust-up that many would seize upon to cast doubt on any and all evidence ever gather by this remarkably dedicated field researcher."

      - Thom Powell

... I can't believe I'm stooping this low but here it goes. A good researcher would test his own sources to see if they could be faked, just like Freeman did. He made fake stompers to see if they could be faked, and guess what? That's how someone impartial thinks. No... I put complete faith in a man who had hairs verified by two camps of primatologists, actually... And if you didn't already read (sigh) they were a preliminary match to a wild human from Uzbekistan?

    39. But by that same token Joe, wouldnt you be doing the same thing freeman did, as well as every other researcher? So by what you wrote above, then we should think that every researcher/scientist should be making fake prints to see if they can be faked. So where are your prints, since this is a good scientific practice? Where are Sykes? Where are Meldrums? With all these researchers studying tracks, you hardly ever hear about those same researchers making fake tracks, just to see if it can be done. The only times i have ever seen this happen, is when cameras are around, and the attempt was being made for the camera and the camera alone. Outside of the camera, the researcher undoubtedly would rather be doing research and other things, rather than making wood molds, or plaster molds. This simply doesnt happen. Because its not a logical part of a true researchers methods. When Meldrum looks at a track, from the first to his last, does he say that they could never be faked and thus i should try and fake them? No. He may have suspicions that they would be very hard to fake, but he realizes they CAN be faked. Therefore he doesnt need to spend hours upon hours trying to make fake tracks. He realizes thats possible, just as every other researcher does. Researchers realize that dermals can be faked, although it would be more time consuming, and the weight shifts of a natural foot may not be there. But remember, he would just be making the track to see if he could. He knows he can. He doesnt need to spend hours trying to perform such a task. So this point that you have made is not a strong one.

You would be very hard pressed to find anyone who is a serious "researcher" who finds bigfoot tracks, and then tries to make tracks to imitate those that he found. Its not a logical point of progression. You would have plenty of excitement at the track find, and a desire to do more research, but deciding to make fake tracks to duplicate what you say you have seen? For whos benefit? His own? He had to do this to convince himself and only himself that those tracks couldnt be faked? Surely he would know this already because he found them in the field and had seen the animals. So he wouldnt need to do such a thing. There is much more to Freeman than most footers would like to admit. The same with Patterson. Why is it, that every time one of these iconic pieces of footage sees the light of day, the filmer always has very very peculiar things in there past? Patterson had plenty of things about his past and the events that led up to the day that should have red flags going up everywhere. And Freeman is no different. Is this just coincidence?

And thank you dmaker. I have tried to be civil with Joe, yet he seems to think im someone else and therfore thinks its okay to throw insults.

    49. Interestingly, one of the tracks that crowley set out to study was one of Freemans. Funny that freeman shows up again, and apparently crowley doubted the tracks as well. And he largely recreated them. Which gained him major notoriety amongst footers. He scrutinized someone elses find. That is quite different than seeing the creatures, which freeman stated, finding there trackways and then casting them. And then turning around and make fakes of those tracks to see if he could. It makes zero sense. He saw the animals, found the tracks, he knew they were real in his mind. What instead his behavior points too, is someone who was interested in perfecting his craft so to speak when it came to tracks. Your logic here just doesnt work Joe, not in the slightest.

Dmaker, you are knowledgeable on bigfoot. Lets say you find a trackway next week and you are now sold that bigfoot is real. You cast the tracks and go home.
As you sit there looking at the cast, at any point do you think you would say: "I think ill try and make a mold of this to prove it can be faked". Or would you realize it could be faked, but very unlikely. Joes logic just makes no sense here at all. And if we are being honest, his logic and truthfullness have really taken a hit lately.

      Delete
    50. Crowley and his friends also did this experiment for publicity. They aired there findings as loud as they could. Which put them on many tv shows and documentaries. On all bigfoot websites, forums, etc. There experiments are known by almost all footers. They didnt just do it for giggles, they did it to get some notoriety, as the people who proved dermals could be faked. And as i stated above, Crowley and company did it to scrutinize the reasearch of others. No amount of special pleading will change this Joe. And bringing them up in response to me and dmakers questions is making you look silly. What other major researchers are finding trackways and then trying to make fake tracks based off them? And this is the 3rd time now youve said you left

      Delete

... And please don't pretend you know the first thing about Crowley.

You must test your research... Ask Dmaker.

    52. I don't think I would bother to try to recreate tracks. If I found tracks and was absolutely convinced of the authenticity, what would be the point? All I would be demonstrating to myself is that the tracks can be reasonable faked. But why would I care when I know, deep down in my bigfoot researcher heart, that the tracks are genuine?

Unless, of course, I want to pretend that they are real, but deep down I know they might not be. Successfully recreating the tracks would sort of shatter that illusion, wouldn't it? So, again why would I want to do that?

Now if I was, as mentioned, trying to perfect my craft...? That's a different story.

      Delete
    53. Yes Donald... And you would also admit to hoaxing on TV when you're trying to make a name for yourself as a genuine researcher?

The fact still remains that there is zero point or logic in trying to recreate the tracks freeman did, when freeman said that he had seen them. It makes no sense. 55. Remember Rick Dyer presented himself as a legit bigfoot researcher showing off his track casts, etc. And of course he was hoaxing everything the whole time. People do it for publicity, even one episode of monster quest or one news article and its worth it to many. They do it to feel justified and important. And also to feel vendicated. Researchers sometimes spend there whole lives getting laughed at for there ideas and so called evidence. Yet one track way can change all that, especially a trackway that might contain "dermals". And Crowley and companies experiments produced dermals. Period. Had Crowley not advertised the results of his experiment, he could have taken his track recreations, mounted them on shoes of some sort, and then made a trackway. And people like you Joe would still be claiming to this day that the trackway offered solid proof because they had ""dermals". And if questioned as to why the dermals didnt look just right. You would come up with an excuse. This is the plight of the footer.

    56. The idea of testing your own plaster molds makes no sense whatsoever Joe. None. IF you are a scientist who is making a certain compound and you come up with something interesting. Yes, then testing and retesting is appropriate. But if im walking through the woods and find a bear track and im researching the life of a bear, no one is going to try and make up a fake bear track as a test. If i claim i have a cougar living on my property, in a state where cougars dont live, and i find a bunch of tracks and start to do research on the animal. Would i then mold those tracks and try and create fake cougar tracks as some type of test to my research? What would that prove? Why would i do it? What possible significance could it add? Use your head Joe

    57. Because Sasquatch are unclassified creatures... You must test research. Come and see me tomorrow kid, I'll teach you a thing or two about dermals.

      Just ask Dmaker.

      Bye, bye!

    60. But again Joe, what was freeman testing? That a fake track could be made? Thats ridiculous in and of itself. When i look at any animal track, including a supposed bigfoot track, i dont have to think, i know that humans can recreate it. At any size and any shape i might add. This is not questionable. Of course a fake track could be made. So what was he testing? And what would be the point of such a test. Its a null test. It provides no results that can be used with any gain. Since you mention an unclassified creature, lests go to the apes discovered recently in the remote wilds. I believe they were called bili apes, or something to that extent. But any unknown primate would suffice. As of a year before they were proved to exist, they were an unclassified creature, as they werent thouht to exist. So when researchers started tracking them and found there tracks. If the mission never located one on that particular occassion, when they returned home with the plaster molds from tracks they found, would they then build plaster or wood molds to see if they could fake the tracks??? I mean this is the argument you are providing for freeman. Think about how it sounds. If researchers to any field applied the type of reasoning you are using, then we would be screwed. But i am not surprised that this is your position. I have to say, you really have been taking a beating these last few weeks Joe. This is probably your worst month on record.

    61. Um... ... ... Because Sasquatch are unclassified creatures... You must test research and rule out hoaxing so twonks like you can't claim hoax.

      Just ask Dmaker.

    63. I don't know why you keep saying ask me. I have never once said you must create fake casts as part of research. I have said scientific evidence must be falsifiable. Meaning there must be a reasonable and logical way to determine the truth or falsity of the claim.

As usual, you bungle this concept brutally.

    65. Also... The Bili Apes (which are basically large man sized chimps), or no recognised primate foot has ever had the same foot morphology as a Sasquatch foot. Sasquatch tracks are like a human foot but twice as big; not a conventional primate foot. This means that the implications are far greater for science, therefore the greater need to test to rule out hoaxing. If someone says to you once you present the tracks, "those casts aren't real, they're fake or you're being hoaxed"... That person can then say after testing, "well I've made fake casts to rule out toe bending around rock and earth and they don't come close!" It's very, very, VERY basic stuff. It also shows that Freeman wasn't jumping in two feet first, wasn't being gullible or presenting his research without being sure of what he had first. Paul Freeman was a government employee and an experienced outdoorsman, he needed to eliminate any doubt he may have had in reflection to what he was finding.

Allow me to educate you some more... for example, when a genuine foot makes contact with the earth, it makes what is called a sequential print. The foot has dozens of bones, tendons and ligaments that flow in a segmented fashion and a fluid motion creates compression lines in the inner perimeter of the track, and can only be made by a living fleshy foot. Now... fake tracks are identified by what are called impact ridges that appear on the outer perimeter of the track. What creates this is the simultaneous pushing out from the pressing down of a solid, non-flexible structure like wood or fake plaster cast. You find out his data by testing the source in question. You don't have to be pessimistic of the source to do this, in fact it's expected by 99.9% of intelligent thinkers, not to mention mainstream scientists.

    67. Your logic is flawed. Jut because you failed to recreate a track with whatever features you find convincing, does not put it out of the realm of human manufacture. Perhaps you have no aptitude in track hoaxing. It doesn't mean someone else couldn't do it.

    68. Yes, that's right... Bust out the fake Iktomi account and demonstrate just how schooled you are.

It's ok... You're learning at least, just look at how much you learned about the Bili Ape in recent weeks. Their IS potential.

    69. If there are so many hallmarks of a genuine footprint, then why have the top bigfoot experts been fooled by tracks several times?

    76. Donald... Even if someone can reproduce what you can't (which they can't), it still means you are being transparent to your own evidence. Flawed logic? Have you no concept of how stupid you are coming across?? Seriously, are you trolling or are you seriously not seeing the plausibility of why someone might test something they have come across... To see if they are being hoaxed? What's more, is this is the reason why Freeman would later admit to making artificial stompers.

How have experts been fooled? By later testing of the sources, you silly boy. By having this information, one can use it going forward in identifying hoaxed tracks. By being hoaxed one accumulates data like up top, and it actually benefits the field in the long run.

I am not of great knowledge... Yet I can point out your embarrassing face falls on falsifiability. Not a good look for someone so allegedly "intelligent" as yourself, right?

    77. Joe, I am tired of your rudeness. I am trying to have a civil conversation with you. If you cannot refrain from using derogatory terms like stupid, then go talk to yourself.

    78. Awwwwwh, you're "tired of my rudeness", now... Sorry Dmaker, I'll forget the last three years. The first time you ever came to this blog, I was civil with you Donald. Even interested to hear your ideas. Please don't insult my intelligence and pretend you're offended now, of all times.

If anything I'm looking out for your credibility, by trying to get to ditch this ridiculous logic. It's not like you... Stop trolling.

    79. I'm hardly trolling, Joe. And I am not offended by your rudeness, I'm just tired of it. I can't have a discussion with someone who uses phrases like "silly boy" and "stupid". While it does not offend me, it gets in the way of any serious dialogue. If you have to condescend to make a point, then you probably either have no point, or should try to up your language skills.
