Evidence For New Human Species Confirmed

A new fossil jaw is among evidence for a new human species.

In 1972, a fossil of a flat-faced early human was found near Lake Turkana in Kenya was thought to be an anomaly but fossils found in the same area between 2007 and 2009 confirms that it was indeed a new species of early human. The area that this new species (tentatively called Homo rudolfensis) was found in was also home to Homo habilis and Homo erectus.

According to the study just released in Nature Journal, this confirms that three Homo species inhabited the area at the same time, around 2 million years ago. There are a couple of theories about how they were able to tolerate each other:

"The cheek bones are so far forward it means they would have been able to use quite a strong biting force," Meave Leakey said.

With a chewing advantage, 1470 may have gravitated toward areas rich with nuts or tough fruits, or perhaps even meat, leaving the softer stuff to erectus and habilis.

It could also be that these early human species just plain got along.

"Modern primates are generally very good at living together," Leakey said. "You can see troops of monkeys composed of at least two species, if not more."

    1. I heard/read the same thing GnR. I guess a little controversy is good though. For me, its kinda reassuring when science is questioning science. Maybe it means they are still doing their job.

LOL!! That was one of the funniest things I have read in a while. We are so good at living together that we still kill each other after all these years
