10 Extraordinary Questions With… Ron Morehead of ‘Bigfoot Sounds’

Ron Morehead is the father of the "Bigfoot Sounds". The recordings are one of the most important evidence supporting the existence of Sasquatch. During the early 1970s, Morehead and his long time friend Al Berry went into the woods of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in eastern California and collected a series of alleged Bigfoot vocalizations that sounded like "samurais" talking. This compilation of vocalizations is now called the "Sierra Sounds" and it has been confirmed by language expert Scott Nelson as Bigfoot language.

This interview with Ron Morehead was originally published on August 21, 2012 by Natalina via Extraodinary Intelligence blog:

We’ve discussed a wide variety of strange phenomena on Extraordinary Intelligence over the years. Very few things rattle me anymore, but when I heard Ron Morehead’s story on L.A. Marzulli’s Acceleration Radio, the hair on the back of my neck stood up.

Starting in 1971, Mr. Morehead had a series of extraordinary encounters. In a remote wilderness camp, he and his party were witnesses to some of the strangest sounds and interactions between man and beast (?) that I’ve ever heard. Returning to the camp many times, Ron and those who traveled with him captured audio evidence of these encounters that may send chills down your spine. His audios have been examined by experts and cannot be debunked. In fact, crypto-linguists claim to have actually discovered a complex language within the recordings!

Ron Morehead is the author of Voices in the Wilderness, and is the producer of the Bigfoot Recordings Vol. 1 & 2. He has had much field experience with the Bigfoot phenomenon, and focuses on interacting with these giants and understanding them better. I am so thrilled that he agreed to share his story with Extraordinary Intelligence.

A note from Ron: My answers are based mostly on my experiences with this particular family of creatures. I believe there could be different types of these giants roaming the forests.

1. Thanks Mr. Morehead, for agreeing to share your compelling story with Extraordinary Intelligence. Before we discuss the evidence you’ve collected, let’s set the scene. Tell us a bit about your background and what led you to the first encounter with an unknown creature in the woods.

At the time these encounters began my profession was in the hospitality industry. I was also the administrator of a large church in Merced, CA. One of the other board members was a hunter and socially our families blended well. At that time I did not hunt. However, in 1971, after the hunting group that my friend was involved with was a couple days late, his wife told me of an encounter the men had with an unknown ‘something’ that made horrific, intimidating sounds and left huge five-toed prints around their camp. All the wives were worried. After one night of experiencing these sounds, one of the hunters fled the camp. He knew the way back in but wanted someone trustworthy to accompany him. This was the beginning of my trekking into this remote wilderness area of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

2. Prior to your encounter with what you believe to be Bigfoot, were you a believer in/did you know much about these beings?

Actually, I had no thoughts about bigfoot, one way or the other. I believed then, as I believe now, that we humans don’t know all there is to know. I was very curious.

3. At what point did you decide to begin recording the sounds you were hearing?

The sounds were being heard almost every time the camp was visited during 1971 and 1972. We all began to pack cassette recorders to record them.

Ron was kind enough to send me a few of the sounds that he’s captured. Listen below:

1. Disagreement:

2. Fast Talk:

3. Vocal Exchange (This one is particularly interesting because it features human interaction with the creatures in the woods):

4. Were you or was anyone in your party ever able to get a visual on the creatures? Further, was there any other strange phenomena seen in the area of these sightings/encounters?

Yes. Although these creatures were/are extremely stealthy, brief glimpses were occasionally caught. However, we were never able to capture a picture. All our camera traps failed. Different type of sounds heard are unexplained by classical science. Small orbs were reportedly following three of the hunters around the camp. I noted a large controlled ball of light once. During the day, we’ve all heard what sounded like a large tuning fork. Other unusual events are mentioned in my book.

5. With regard to the sounds that you captured, what makes them stand out as unique to other woodland animal sounds?

Their rapid chatter and amplitude is completely different than anything else that might be heard in the forest.

6. Has there been any type of research or review of the tapes? What were the findings?

Yes. In 1978, Dr. R. Lynn Kirlin, Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Wyoming, conducted a year-long study of the sounds and established that the tapes had not been altered, i.e., slowed down, speeded up, pre-recorded or re-recorded. His semi-quantitative study also established the vocal track length to be much larger than that of humans. More recently, in 2008, a highly trained Crypto-Linguist, R. Scott Nelson, established that the sounds are ‘language’.

The interaction exchange was recorded in 1974 when I tried to mimic their sounds. According to the Crypto-Linguist, this was an effort on their part to slow down their rapid chatter and communicate.

7. Do you continue to visit the area where you first encountered bigfoot?

Yes.

8. What is your advice to an amateur researcher who may encounter creatures such as the ones you’ve had experience with?

There are several things I suggest, which can be reviewed on my web site www.bigfootsounds.com. However, the main suggestion is to realize that they are sentient beings, able to reason using cognizant thought process like we do. Don’t underestimate them.

9. Do you have theories as to the origins of Bigfoot? What are they? Where do they come from? Are they strictly physical beings or do you think there’s a supernatural component to their existence?

Theories can change as one’s knowledge expands. However, after over 40 years of delving into this enigma, my theory at this time is that they are a remnant of a demigod – celestial intervention; perhaps part great ape (orangutan?). The sentiency comes from the celestial intervention. They are definitely ‘physical’ but may also have an attribute that we don’t fully understand –nor is it answerable by classical science. Perhaps we also have this attribute, but were disconnected from it at one time, i.e., ‘Garden of Eden’.

10. Thank you so much for taking the time to discuss your fascinating research with us! For our final question, do you have any upcoming projects/appearances that you’d like the readers to be aware of? Also, where can we acquire your published materials and please share the links to your website.

At my presentations I give a PowerPoint program and play some of the sounds. These events are mentioned on my Facebook page. My book, ‘Voices in the Wilderness’ and two different CDs with the story and the sounds are available at www.bigfootsounds.com

I appreciate this opportunity.

Thus, the EXTRAORDINARY in the title of my interviews is a reference to the name of the site, not the caliber of my interview skills. But thanks for the thoughtful response.

Mr. Morehead refers to the creatures he encountered and recorded as Bigfoot for lack of a better term. The audios have been examined by the University of Wyoming as well as a host of other research facilities and experts. Whatever they are, they aren't human and they aren't ape.

It's an interesting bit of evidence that SOMETHING weird was happening in the Sierra woods.

    3. No worries. There's a split on the name of my site. Some people love it, some people don't get it so I spend a lot of time explaining that the Extraordinary is in reference to the Intelligence as in Intel/Info, not my vast intellect. With that said, I'm relatively Extraordinary and Intelligent so... ;)

    4. anybody that classifies an animal as a demigod is fugging retarded... how about using common sense and coming to a conclusion that is actually possible

      Delete
    5. That is simply his opinion based upon his own belief structure. He's a Christian and believes that it is possible that what we consider to be "bigfoot" may be a result of genetic tampering by celestial intervention. The term demigod is applied in place of a term like "angel" or "nephilim".

It really matters little with regard to the audios. He simply shares his own worldview in response to my question. He's not the first to apply a supernatural component to the existence of bigfoot.

I can't vouch for the veracity of his claims as to bigfoot origins, but I can assure you he is not retarded. He's actually quite intelligent.

What I don't understand is why it seems impossible to disagree with someone without name calling and cruelty. Doesn't seem to add much to the conversation.

In any case, I suppose my comments will either be ignored or perhaps if I'm lucky they'll fuel more mean spirited debate.

So, I'll let y'all have at it :)

    6. These tapes are obviously A language...no one ever said a "Bigfoot" language merely an unknown one. I have postulated many many times on this board that the tapes captured teo or more Native Americans, using a masking technique similar to the "wind talkers" but also including the purposeful voice distortions and mock animal sounds/whistles......and I suspect this was unknown to Moorehead who himself was hoaxed by these Natives.

    9. Yes because we all know that Native Americans live out in the forests and just can't pass up a good chance to hoax people. That's just what they do, apparently.
Also they have extremely long vocal tracts. Much longer than the average human because apparently to some people on here, Native Americans somehow are human but aren't human? Yeah, I guess that clears it all up. Thanks smart guy. You avoid points like you were jumping out of the way of a truck.

  14. So he is hinting at them being nephilim? That makes for a hard pill to swallow. I don't think merging paranormal into the field of Sasquatch is doing anyone a favor. Is it necessary to include religion in everything. A supernatural forest man that feeds on deer and is scared of cameras and controls balls of light. Could we add a couple more obscure references. It was a man-bear-pig-zombie-vampire-werewolf that likes kung-fu movies. I use to like these recordings but the whole supernatural element makes it very suspect to me.

    1. Why does his opinion make the audios suspect? Is the implication that because over time he's come to these conclusions (way back in the 70's he felt quite differently and readily admits in the interview that his view evolves over time) that they aren't genuine? If he simply said, "I think they're apes in the woods" it would make you think the audios are genuine?

I think of it this way... you and I could both capture footage of a floating orb in the sky. You say swamp gas, I say aliens. It doesn't change the fact that we both captured legit footage of SOMETHING.

      Delete
    2. Natalina, what type of equipment this was recorded with?

      Delete
    3. My understanding is that it was standard tape recording equipment, possibly with microphones. Keep in mind that most of these recordings were done in the early 70's so the equip wasn't incredibly sophisticated.

    5. I apologize for the manbearpig comment. He has a right to believe whatever he wants to. My point is that to say that Sasquatch is a supernatural being descendant for demigods(reference to nephilim) is religious. The field of Sasquatch research is on the fringe as it is and it makes it hard for science to prove a beings existence if it becomes convoluted with religious connotations. I and others are working to bring common acceptance to Sasquatch. I am not saying that his recordings are suspect. I actually stated that I greatly enjoyed the recordings, and I have listened to them numerous times/shown them to my friends. I have studied the sounds for great periods of time long before this interview. I am saying that to call Sasquatch "supernatural" is suspect. In my experience, there has been no indication of supernatural powers of any sort. I will concede that even at their incredible size, their feats of strength, speed, agility, stealth, and athleticism could be interpreted as phenomenal, borderline impossible, but it is not supernatural. As for being a troll, I don't think you know what a troll is. Trolls just try to distract the conversation, not be involved.

      Delete
    6. Anyways, what made him believe that Sasquatch are descendant of demigods? I find the similarities glaring but I am not religious so I would assert that it is more likely, Sasquatch (or similar) influenced the Nephilim story. I am familiar with people feeling dizzy, confused, and other strange things when encountering Sasquatch. But could be explained as "having the world as you know it turned upside down".

      Delete
    7. His opinions do not make the tapes suspect. They were examined at other labs as well and pronounced authentic. R Scott Nelson comes along and with 30 years training in Naval Intelligence concludes there is a language here. I have the tapes and there is a lot on them, and I would encourage anyone interested to purchase them. His theory that Bigfoot was genetically engineered is as good a theory as any right now and there is a tremendous amount of evidence for humans arriving in this manner.

I had not heard about the light orbs before and that is interesting, but what it means, I do not know except that they do exist and could possibly be a surveillance object. I came face to face with one less than two feet away in July of 1995 while traveling north on I-75, just north of Grayling Michigan ( Home of an Army National Guard training base ). It was in the back of my friends truck ( He was driving ) just inches away from the rear window and stayed with us for about 10 seconds while I watched it flabergasted. When I shouted for my friend Rick to turn around as he would not believe what was here, he just caught a glimpse of it as it shot straight up in the air and was out of sight in about one second. It was the size of a grapefruit and has a fuzzy white glow.

Anyway a very good article Natalina, and thanks for the interview.

      Chuck

    8. Again- Not calling the tapes suspect. I enjoy/use the tapes as reference. I regret not clarifying this in the first place.

      Delete
    9. Glad you enjoyed it Chuck, and a great perspective.

Laisezfairescience, I do understand your point and I guess I reacted most strongly to your comment " I use to like these recordings but the whole supernatural element makes it very suspect to me." I interpreted that to mean that because he believes there is a supernatural element, the tapes themselves have become suspect to you. I apologize if that isn't what you meant.

I do understand that for those who consider sasquatch to be a flesh and blood creature with no supernatural attributes, such conjecture on the part of bigfoot witnesses must be frustrating, as it surely continues to relegate bigfoot to the "fringe". With that said, I think bigfoot is going to stay firmly planted in the fringe anyway until someone is able to get one in a TV interview. That's just the nature of public opinion, sadly.

Now, as to the religious component, I suppose one could apply that to anything. People with a spiritual world view will naturally view the world around them through a spiritual lens. His attribution of the sierra creatures to the Biblical nephilim or a byproduct thereof fits within his worldview, and I certainly can't fault a guy for that anymore than I can fault a person who sees the world as entirely physical for considering sasquatch to be nothing more than an unknown species.

I do appreciate this particular exchange.

P.S. I never called you a troll nor do I think that you've shown any of the common attributes of a troll :) Trolls don't tend to use logic and reason within their comments, and you've used both. Be well!

    10. Natalina, thank you. I knew you didn't call me a troll (that was the anons). I too overreacted. I agree, we all see the world through our own lens. I also want to state that I do not fault anyone for having spiritual beliefs. I simply overreacted, as I am obviously passionate about the subject. I am naturally skeptical, and probably would not care about BF if I didn't have my own experience (life would be easier if I didn't). I agree with your above post entirely. You are right, it is frustrating for me to be doing field work and still talk about the supernatural element of which I don't agree. I too have enjoyed this exchange and apologize for any offensive remarks I made. Thank you.

I also would speculate that physical attributes like long hair(protection from the elements, camouflage) size(apex predator) are adaptations to their environment. People use tools, where as BF's use speed/prowess/power/stealth. They hunt using teamwork and the above mentioned attributes which are necessary to survival in their environment.
