Bigfoot Sightings in Hawaii
Editor’s Note: Jonathan Poulsen has been researching the Sasquatch since 2008, but really involved himself heavily in 2011. He has since devoted his life to the near impossible challenge of verifying the existence of the Sasquatch. Shawn refers to him as the Bigfoot encyclopedia.
It is often said that there have been sightings of mysterious ape-men in every state exept Hawaii. Well, Hawaii may not foster the classic Sasquatch of the Pacific Northwest, but they may have something somewhat similar. Local folklore tells of hairy dwarfs who purportedly travel in large groups of up to twenty individuals.
Menehune, as they are called by the Natives, are a well known figure of mythology or rumor, but, most rumors do generally stem from fact. A quality that the Menehune seem to share with our Sasquatch is nocturnalism. One such sighting from the late 1940s had nearly fifty eyewitnesses (the vast majority of these being young schoolchildren).
More recently, a woman claims to have seen twenty Menehune creatures cross the road in front of her car, and not only that, but she also claims to have struck one with her vehicle! It appeared to have left a dent in her car and left behind with it a bit of red hair (sightings describe red-haired creatures, so props for consistency if this is a hoax).
But alas, the current whereabouts of the hair is unknown. Astonishly, way back in 1786, a census was conducted by King Kaumualii's men and it was revealed that 65 such "people" existed at that time. Somehow, I have a hard time believing that such a Bigfoot-documenting census would be carried out today....
Jonathan cut that dam hair of yours , it makes you look like a fg !
ReplyDeleteI think its a wig.
DeleteI actually got a hair-cut a few weeks ago. Now I'm trying to get hair similar to what Mark Hamill had in 'Corvette Summer'. But seriously, enough about the dreads.
DeleteVery interesting article. Thanks for writing it Mr. Poulsen, and thanks for posting it, Shawn.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if there is any insular dwarfism going on here? These creatures remind me of Homo Floresiensis.

Maybe they are, or are closely related to, those orang pendek critters.
ReplyDeleteThanks JP. This is the first time I read anything about undocumented primates in Hawaii that was not patently ridiculous ala "Bigfoot stows away on liners.."

This needs a lot of funding to research in detail. Hawaii for about 6 months to 1 year at minimum.. Seeking $2,000,000 for such a study, willing to take blurry photos and video of possible unknown creatures and report on at least a weekly basis. Any takers?
ReplyDeleteI am sure some tv shows will relocated and spend similar time working really hard at the same thing.
New anony
i agree i will go to hawaii and carry your gear and help you,we must find this surfer bigfoot befor it is too late!
DeleteOddly enough, I was listening to a "Coast to Coast" episode on youtube (from a while back) which had Loren Coleman as the guest. The woman who said she saw 20 of the menehunes and hit one with her car called in reporting it to Coleman. He asked her to contact him through his email to talk with her about it.
ReplyDeleteShe also said the others picked up the injured one and went on their way, if I remember correctly. Very interesting they were included in a census.
This World is too big and too diverse, who knows what's out there, i believe there is an undiscovered island somewhere where unknown and unseen creatures of a sizes thrive, stupid man for thinking he knows every living creature on this planet (peter griffin's voice)
ReplyDeleteThere once was a time when I thought the planet as a whole had been completely discovered. Now, I accept the reality that we have barely scraped the surface. We've only explored 3% of the ocean, so it's more probable than not that there are new species of cetaceans, Giant Sharks, Sea Serpents and other fantastic apperations. What about space? Our species has only set foot on two planets out of zillions. Who knows, maybe the universe itself is infinite. But back to Bigfoot, there are ample places that they could live without being detected by science. Did you know you can walk from California to Alaska without leaving the wilderness?
DeleteThis is pure crap. The modern mythos of Menehune as a race of mischevious dwarves are purely a post-contact creation.
ReplyDeleteThe Kaumualiʻi census revealed 65 outcasts.
Hell, look at the word itself and its meaning in the original Tahitian.
Are you from Hawaii? Are the Menehune a known thing among locals?
DeleteYes. And yes. Sure they are "known." But in a culture in which people readily accept the regular presence and influence of ancient gods and goddesses, of 'aumakua, of huaka'i po, kapu, and even Japanese obake... menehune's aren't considered more than fun kids stories and a fun post-contact mix of European and Polynesian folk tales.
DeleteGotta go with Ainokea, here. The (few) things I've heard about Menehune made me think of them as a sort of Polyneisian Brownie/Leprechaun redux.
DeleteHowdy! This is kind of off topic but I need some advice from an
ReplyDeleteestablished blog. Is it tough to set up your own blog?
I'm not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty fast. I'm
thinking about creating my own but I'm not sure where to begin. Do you have any tips or suggestions? Many thanks
