Are tracking dogs the key to locating a Sasquatch?

Editor’s Note: Jonathan Poulsen has been researching the Sasquatch since 2008, but really involved himself heavily in 2011. He has since devoted his life to the near impossible challenge of verifying the existence of the Sasquatch. Shawn refers to him as the Bigfoot encyclopedia.

Well, are they? This particular method has been tried many times over the years.

- Back in 1958, when a Bigfoot was leaving 16 inch tracks and scaring away Ray Wallace's construction workers in Bluff Creek, Ray Kerr and Bob Breazele were hired to hunt the mysterious footprint maker. They brought with them four tracking dogs. One day, the dogs disappeared while the men were following a trail of footprints. Their skins and bones were later found scattered around some trees (this was probably the work of a bear, but wouldn't experienced tracking dogs be accustomed to dealing with bears?).

- During the Pacific Northwest Expedition funded by Texas oil millionaire Tom Slick in 1960, Ivan Marx tried to get some dogs to get the smell off of some tracks, but the dogs wouldn't follow them (these "tracks" were probably made by carved wooden feet and left by Ray Wallace seeing as though all of his fake tracks showed up in this region).

- In the 1977 feature-length film 'Sasquatch: Legend of Bigfoot', the narrator explains that the reason why the expedition team uses German Shepherd's is because they "will not bark or betray their presence until their quarry is cornered".

- Later, in 1982, when several unique footprints showed up near Walla Walla, Washington that showed incredibly detailed dermatoglyphics, some boarder patrol officers grabbed a couple of dogs and tried to get them to follow the trail, but to no avail. The dogs started to whimper and put their tail inbetween their legs. Paul Freeman says the dogs didn't follow the trail because they were too scared, but Rene Dahinden argues that the dogs couldn't follow them because they were fake.

Forget about bloodhounds! What about German Shepherd's? They sound like the perfect choice for the job. The idea of using tracking/hunting dogs to follow tracks and find a Bigfoot has not been used recently, hopefully we can revive this concept and see if the German Shepherd idea will work. Who knows? Anything is possible.

  1. The dogs refused to track in the case of the Fouke monster too. SWP

  2. I would try a Rhodesian Ridgeback, originally used to hunt lions, or a Korelian Bear Dog. If you got a pair of either of these breedsthou could train them not to bark by giving them a high pitch correction every time they barked while you were in the bush. If you were real lucky and had a big wad of Sasquatch hair you could train them like drug dogs and put the hair inside their favorite toy. Then every time you went out you could just tell them to go get their toy. Thought about this too. John

  3. Hounds will track any real animal. Man, bear, cougar, lion, hog, squirrel, coon. The list goes on and on. They are also used to sniff out drugs, bombs, accelerants, cadavers, termites, truffles, and even cancer cells in humans. Once they are accustomed to a scent they are like a guided missle. 1 good catch dog can hold a 400lb boar hog until the hunters arrive. Get them accustomed to the scent of a bigfoot IF it exists and with tracking collars and camera collars you will get your squatch, IF it exists. J.D.

  4. This is the only sure fire way to get a Sasquatch (if it exists). I've always wondered how researchers haven't done this? This is also the reason I don't believe Sasquatch exists, because if they did, "someone" would have already done trained dogs to do this and put this little mystery to rest once and for all. He just isn't out there. Bank it.

    1. Dogs hate Sasquatches and vice versa. I don't think they keep pets anyway, and it's a known fact that even the toughest most fearless dogs will quiver and hightail (or lowtail) when encountering this species. Dogs immediately sense something's wrong and such chases usually end quick and drastically, I suspect they sense they're not animals/prey but unnatural and foul smelling not to be messed with bad (to canines) people.

    2. By that same token, supposedly peoples dogs have been killed for approaching Sasquatch and becoming aggressive. I cannot be convinced, based off that supposed fact alone that a group of hounds can't be trained to track Sasquatch if it exists. This is the whole reason I.don't buy into its existence. This is by far the simplest and most common sense approach to be utilized and once and for all put this mystery to bed. The fact that it hasn't been done successfully since the 50's leads me to logically conclude they don't exist. I mean, if I were dead set on researching and finding Sasquatch (like so many out there apparently are) this would be the way I'd go about it.

  5. I've read many accounts of encounters of bigfoot involving the most trusted attack dogs and the dogs are either mutilated or run toward safety with their tail between their legs when they had never acted like that before.

  7. It is pretty apparent that dogs are not the way to go in the search for sasquatch. Refusing to track, cowardly retreats and dismemberment are key signs it most likely won't ever work. Good luck to those who try though.

    1. Hey Anonymous, did I say 2008 was a long time ago? Nope. And also, who are you and why haven't you revealed your name? Are you just a 50 yr old hiding in his mother's basement on his Windows 98 writing anonymous comments to ventilate your anger because you couldn't get a date to the high school prom 35 years ago? Another thing, I bet I have obtained more knowledge about the Sasquatch in my 4 years then you can get in a lifetime. Thanks for your words of wisdom!

    5. About Jeff Meldrum and tracking dogs--I don't know if there were articles written about it, but he does talk about that and bring out a tracking dog and trainer in the special "Bigfoot: The Definitive Guide" from the History Channel. The dog doesn't find anything.
Also dogs were brought in on a couple of Monster Quest episodes, but were not successful. Both were used when people had hit a BF with their car. One actually picked up a scent and searchers could hear something large moving through the forest ahead of them, but the dogs lost the scent after the animal went into the swamp.

  9. Sorry for this question, as it is unrelated to the dogs, but i don't know where to post it:

Does an animal's hair stop growing? How long will it grow before shedding? Over time, i've read a lot of eye-witness reports from different sites, and i've yet to read a description wear the hair goes to the waist. Would an adult BF's hair stop growing? I am a BF skeptic but i am also open-minded.

    1. Anonymous, I have an idea as to why some Sasquatch have short hair and some have long hair. I will post an article about this in the following week. Thank you for your comment.

    2. Well, they're not animals for one thing that's just so far out to assume today and like we lose hair naturally so do they maybe with their longer more thicker hair. Patty seemed somewhat thinhaired in spots and could've been pregnant.

    1. Agree. Dogs will track, hunt and kill anything. I should say a (pack) of dogs. A lone dog might hesitate but that still depends on the reason for conflict. Larger dangerous game just needs a larger pack of dogs.

    2. Won't work here though, there's nothing larger than Sasquaches out there so dogs wouldn't stand a chance.

  14. Yes Yes Yes if you want to get a Bigfoot Video get some Bear Dogs like the ones used to track Patty in 1967, once they found her and her baby the jig was up. So I agree use dogs.

  15. My dog seems to like to sniff things out and follow scents he picks up but I don't think I'd ever use him to track Bigfoot.
I have been working with him to track small objects just to keep him occupied and keep his mind busy. Once he understood "where is ___" and "find it", the rest was easy.

  19. Greetings,

During the very late 80s I helped rewrite the training documents for the DOD Dog School at Lackland AFB TX. I realized then that dogs could be trained by master instructors to overcome their primal instinct fear and track Sasquatch.

You could do this taking care to keep the dog close to prevent a confrontation between only the dog and the specimen being tracked. I suspect this would not go on for long and the specimen would grow weary of this really quick and become enraged and aggressive.

The human trackers should be heavily armed and prepared for a violent confrontation with one or more BF specimens. If someone is determined to track and kill a specimen this would be the way to do it.

However, as I've stated previously. Current thinking from physical anthropologists puts the species very likely in the Homo Genus and they may be under our laws considered human. After examination by a forensic pathologist the hunters may find themselves charged with murder. My best,

    LL

  20. ny question is, WHY?? are dogs soo scared of this creatures, they don't harm humans but they would see a dog as a threat, Dogs are just not the way to go, how about bears??? yes bears, they have better sense of smell better than a bloodhound, we can train them to track, besides, bears are sort of fearless, either that or we get some lions from africa hahaha! im pretty sure BF wouldnt wanna be tracked by a 500 pound male lion, either way, dogs aren't brave enough for the job so for now we should just rely on our senses and technology.

  21. Of course, the old line is that dogs are too afraid to track bigfoot. That's just a bunch of hooey. It's an excuse for why dogs don't find bigfoot. A pack of hounds will go after anything.
