A Return To the Scene of a Crime: The Chilliwack Fish Thief

Editor’s Note: This is a post by Bigfoot Evidence contributor Vicki W.

Way back in 1986, an elderly couple from Kansas visiting British Columbia became the unwitting victims of a crime. While the couple were doing some fishing on the banks of the Chilliwack River, the woman caught sight of a thief absconding with the trout they had tied on a line high in a tree. The fish bandit then ran northward, crossing a road and disappearing into the forest. Of course, it isn't all that unusual for fishermen to attract hungry grizzlies who can sniff out the scent of a meal from some distance. But the couple say they got a good look at the perp, and insist it wasn't the usual suspect. It was an 8 foot tall sasquatch.

Word spread quickly about the town, and soon reached the ears of Thomas Steenburg who traveled to the campsite to investigate. Luckily, he arrived in just enough time to speak to the Kansas City couple before they headed for home. He was able to follow the trail left by the fleeing fish thief and managed to find 110 huge footprints as it escaped into the forests of Ford Mountain.

Steenburg revisits the site and retraces the path from where the Bigfoot snatched the stringer of trout, and describes how he was able to track the creature's movements as it made it's getaway. He managed to get a photo and a casting of one of the foot impressions, but wishes he could have a do-over. If only he could have utilized both the advanced technology of today's world as well as the experience he has gained from years on the job, perhaps he might have collected more substantial evidence. We've come a long way, baby, it's true, but so far no one has managed to bring in the wilderness' number one most wanted fugitive even so. But let's keep our fingers crossed, because maybe 2012 really will be the year of the sasquatch.

  2. Agreed. Seems the stories hold my interest more than the blobs and mud throwing. Nicely done.

  3. I have read quite a few encounters involving Bigfoot and fish and most involved the Bigfoot stealing fish. I believe that fish is a staple of these creatures and therefore a never ending supply of protein and very healthy. Thanks Vicki.

    1. Considering the stories told by the native people's, of salmon being stolen, and the modern accounts of the same behavior; it appears as if Sasquatch includes fish in its diet. The Allagash sighting occurred during a Smelt run, and the witness reported the hair of the Sasquatch as being "oily/wet", which might suggest the creature was at the Smelt run for the same reason the humans were. To catch Smelts. SWP

  9. Thanks for all the support and kind words regrading the follow-up. Thomas and I shot some more video that day. In fact, there are three follow-up reports pending. I emailed Shawn last night asking if Thomas or I can do a guest article. They are old reports, but thoroughly investigated by John Green or Thomas Steenburg.
