BFRO: "WARNING: Do not use this forum to invite people to meet you in the woods!"

When someone tweeted the screenshot above of a post title on the BFRO's website forum, we had to check it out. Yes, we chuckled a little bit at the title, but after reading the thread, it's actually a serious issue with strangers inviting another stranger to go out into the woods and returning with "bad experiences for the people who accepted the invitations."

Here's a post by BossBurg for "new forum members" about this warning:

Navigator wrote;

This is a public discussion forum. Most of the users here are not members of the BFRO, so most of the messages here are NOT posted by members of the BFRO.

In the past, on this forum, various people who are unknown to us have posted messages inviting anyone to meet with them for camping trips / BF scouting trips.

Some of those situations turned out to be bad experiences for the people who accepted the invitations.

The people who accepted the invitations assumed they were meeting up with someone(s) connected with the BFRO somehow. In fact, a few of the people putting out the invitations claimed (in private messages) to be BFRO investigators, but they were not.

The folks who were drawn in by those invitations often encountered people who were either semi-homeless freeloaders, or mentally unstable creeps, or both.

Because these bad situations are not merely a risk, but rather a sure thing, to some degree, if history is to be our guide .... We will not allow the BFRO's public forum to be used for this purpose.

Henceforth: No one may post messages seeking to meet others for camping trips, etc.

The Internet is a great medium for meeting new people with shared interests. And we want people to make new friends in the BF community, at least in the non-trashy portion of the BF community ... But you should *first* meet new people in group situations -- at conferences or expeditions, or any other type of non-committal group situation ....

In other words, do not meet strangers in remote lonely places for weekend camping trips.

A garden variety blind date is risky enough .... but a weekend camping trip in the boonies, with a complete stranger ... is definitely not advisable.

  2. Sounds like a wise thing to post. Isn't there already cases of bad things happening through craigs'?

  3. It is definitely sound advice, but I think it would have been better if they could have had "Duelin' Banjos" playing in the background as I read it.

  5. Let's have some fun! (and by that, I mean keep the answers clean and funny)

"Which 'Finding Bigfoot' cast member would you be least likely to go meet in the woods and why?"

I'll get the obvious one outta the way... "I'd say Ranae, because she keeps standing me up!"
    ...and GO!

  11. First, my brother is a deer hunter for many years. While he hunts in a woods he normally goes too he became with questions why he didn't see any deer’s around. He then tried going to another place just within a moment he and another person heard this loud and never heard before strange screaming (which left them actually scared--and they NEVER get scare) soon after they heard another noise as he describe to me was very heavy walking sounds (like heavy thumping) and a sound like if someone was hitting trees with sticks. They got out of there as fast as they came. My brother did say whatever it was... Was tall--heavy and moved super-fast...he felt that whatever this was must have seen them and didn't want them around. This happen two times in a roll.
Do you think this could be a Sasquatch?? Should be rightfully afraid to go back and get his deer stands??
