Watch this Condit Dam explosion on the White Salmon River in Washington [VIDEO]

On October 26th, a hole was blasted in the base of 125' tall Condit Dam on the White Salmon River in Washington. In less than 2 hours, the reservoir behind the dam drained completely and the White Salmon flowed unimpeded by a dam for the first time in 100 years.

This short clip is a combination of video and timelapse photography captured throughout the day:

According to Gizmodo via National Geographic, the removal of the Condit Dam is part of a larger ecological effort to increase the water flow along the White Salmon River, which will in turn restore fish populations and other aquatic life that local species of birds and animals rely on. The dam was actually responsible for producing 14 megawatts of electricity for local residents, but the company that owned it decided it was cheaper to just blow it up and source the power from somewhere else, instead of upgrading the facility to facilitate the migration of fish.

  1. Fantastic...a long effort. If you are wondering why blow up the dam, a great program is Nature's Salmon documentary, I think "the Gauntlet"
It might even make you wonder how this relates to Sasquatches!

  2. Wow at the huge amount of silt that was built up!Looking forward to an update in a year or so to see how or if spawning has picked up. If they will do a follow up.
