Dr. Jeff Meldrum discusses possibility of Bigfoot at UVU
Meldrum at UVU book signing |
The Utah Valley University Humanities department last Friday sponsored a lecture by Dr. Jeff Meldrum. As an anthropologist, he is America's leading scientific expert on Bigfoot/Sasquatch evidence. He is also an impressive speaker and gives a superb presentation on the Bigfoot subject.
You can read the recap below from www.uvureview.com:

The room was overflowing with people sitting in the aisles as students, professors and community members gathered to listen to Jeff Meldrum discuss the possibilities of Sasquatch being more than a myth. The lecture sponsored by the Humanities department was held Friday, Nov. 11, and received much curiosity on campus.
“There is the traditional legend of Sasquatch, but is there evidence behind the lore?” Meldrum said as he began his presentation. Meldrum is a physical anthropologist and currently teaches at Idaho State University. He dedicated a large portion of his life to studying the history, folklore and evidences surrounding “big foot.” Along with traveling to Russia and parts of China, Meldrum has tracked the Sasquatch figure around the U.S. as well.
Meldrum walked the audience through the history of different interpretations of Sasquatch, or “the wild man,” beginning with Enkidu and Gilgamesh and going into the myth of Grendel and Beowulf. He laughed about the different movies and depictions of the Sasquatch figure.
Meldrum also discussed the ancestry and evolution of monkeys and how that potentially ties in with Sasquatch by showing several different slides.
“There have been several different humanoid species at a time in history,” Meldrum said. “There is evidence that Neanderthals coexisted with the human species, and there have been six different humanoid species in the last 20,000 years.”
With such a varying range of evolved human and ape-like species throughout history, Meldrum made the connection that it is very possible that the Sasquatch figure could be one of these variations coexisting with the human race today. However, Meldrum pointed that through studies, it still remains hard to determine if the Sasquatch is more of an ape or man.
In his argument that the Sasquatch could potentially be considered to have more of a monkey ancestry, Meldrum cited evidences that apes can grin, have breasts, and can walk upright on two legs, just like humans. These are all characteristics that have been linked to the Sasquatch by several eye witness accounts.
“But, people often see what they want to see, so eye witness accounts aren’t always totally reliable,” Meldrum said. People have also taken footage of the Sasquatch walking in the forest, carrying only a crude stick. “Humans often carry and collect objects,” Meldrum said as he continued to weigh the characteristics of human versus monkey traits apparent in Sasquatch.
Meldrum also cited the historical sightings of Sasquatch, beginning with several stories and footprints appearing in several Asian countries. He feels that the “Yeti” monster reported about in the Himalayan mountains may be an ancestor figure to the current day Sasquatch. Meldrum’s main line of expertise involves the footprints and tracking of the Sasquatch. He has studied several different imprints in mud and sand, and he possesses fossilized models to figure out the movement of the massive “big foot.”
Meldrum meets much skepticism with his theories and worldwide research associated with chasing the evidence of Sasquatch.
“When a friend said, ‘Well after all, these are just stories,’ I replied, ‘Yes. Stories that shed hair, leave footprints, and are seen by eyewitnesses.’”

Great post Shawn. Its great for the bigfooting world to have a man in his position speak so publicly about sasquatch. I wonder how much skeptical critism he must have to deal with among his peers. To me it seems quite brave to take the stance that he does......especially in public.
ReplyDeleteI still have a tough time in the business world I'm surrounded by to even talk about it, and if I do, its only a "hobby" of mine.
Hats off to him.
Paul
Yeah kudos to him!!
ReplyDeleteI believe he is still an Associate Professor - so perhaps Sasquatch has had some impact.
ReplyDeleteDifficult area to produce a paper for peer-review, his paper on tracks presented at a conference.
Also, many feel his lack of experience in the field early on and willingness to believe the "old crony network - Green, et. al" meant he was sorely misled down a path of "apes."
Many of these guys need to make a major paradigm shift on what and who they THINK Sasquatch are!
It seems they have contacted Larry Surface (doubt Melba will let him talk) and so perhaps Meldrum can catch up...too many episodes of Monster Quest..he began to believe it!
As a result some feel he has not contributed to his potential and his mindset has prevented many with different views from being heard.
I welcome his, apparently, changing views, and for that we will all benefit.
Wild people are much more interesting than wild beasts!
.
I, obviously, am not an Academic...but, it does seem that perhaps it is time to think of being "human" in cultural terms as well, rather than just the standard biology, etc.
ReplyDeleteI am certain any modern human that met a Sasquatch would not feel the Sas was a modern human...and yet genetically they appear to be almost identical (that small percent variation is important...but doesn't create an "ape.").
And if modern human were to meet an idolated Amazon tribe they would have no difficulty saying, primitive but modern.
So I understand why some resist the idea that Sasquatches are "Homo sapiens hirsutii" - it just doesn't sound right!?
But, again if we look to the entire "package" of what it means to me human...they don't quite make the grade ...yet (we may find all the depth of culture we have when we finally have a friend in the Sas tribe)
So, I think in this "lull" of proof picking up what we can on hunter gather tribes and feral human development would be more fruitful than turning back to the same old books...which bty Meldrum points out - those old witness accounts, when the person is shocked, aren't worth much. Look for accounts where the person is non-plussed and then read how they view a SAS....radically different!
So, I don't mean to be too harsh on Green, Coleman types..the books are fun..but they do appear to be biased toward dark scary nights, breathless witnesses, and hulking dark Sas's!
Times are changing....1500 note cards of witness accounts used to be the "gold Standard" held by Green...compare to .perhaps 25,000 accounts held by BFRO..
which reminds me - MM you are sitting on a pile of data and I see no "access" or "fields" type matrix statistical analysis of the data... it could be useful ..
but then again we are back to this weird "self-appointed" world of BF Hunters that perhaps choose the pursuit precisely b/c it is wild..
I should make mention of newer books that are contributing to that paradigm shift, most notably David Paulides "Tribal Bigfoot.' If you haven't read it you should, especially if all you have read is on the web or old "BF classics." I think Shawn is Ok with "links" his website here: www.nabs.com (i think) and pay especial attention to the old Ray Crowe files...
ReplyDeletePaulides has made a tremendous amount of data available to us all for free, you can get lost in it. And it will help you make a shift from ape to "almost -human"
Meldrum was kind enough to take the time to reply to several emails I sent him regarding concerns with Paul Freeman's finds. Seeing as I am just an enthusiast , I have to say this showed a lot of class on his part. Grover Krantz did the same. Gentleman, both of them.
ReplyDeleteOkay...The SILENCE is deafening..I imagine some BF players not willing to accept a taxonomic designation in advance of a paper..and more studies..prudent for sure.
ReplyDeleteBut, I am excited by it, because it is closer to my sense of who BFs are. And I hope signals a change in BF research methods and resulting discussions!
And I have the confidence that all of the work of the past is going to bust through this log jam....and information will begin to flow..
and that we as modern humans will choose to do the right thing by our Hidden Brothers..
Wow, you are lucky, but it also sounds like that was some time back..say pre-Monster Quest? I have not been so lucky and I tried many times!
ReplyDeleteI EXPECT meldrum to have a foundational paper on all of this...i don't expect him to hang on to any ideas that aren't based in good evidence and the goodevidence far exceeds what we has just a few years ago..he is a scientist and he will adapt to the data whatever it shows...and he is in a position one hopes to get the right academics involved as this emerges... LOL IF it ever does..
ReplyDeleteI guess I don't care so much..there I do care we change how we thing about Sasquatch nd how we treat them.
or 'think' and so on with the typos...so srry!
ReplyDeleteI also wonder why MM is sitting on all this information. Why not share it?
ReplyDeleteOne could get the impression that he's scraping every dime he can from the show, then he'll write a book, make a movie and/or sell the info online.
Not saying it's true, but if it walks like a duck.....you know the rest.

Reply to ApeHuman-
ReplyDeleteI wrote Meldrum around the time MonsterQuest was in it's final Season. It was a total of three emails, all of which he replied to. Grover Krantz also replied to two emails, again about Paul Freeman's findings and Cliff Crook's Forrest worker photos.
I made sure I acknowledged his busy schedule and thanked him for his time in advance.
It must be my name b/c I did that as well as send a DVD..and of course thanked him for his time in advance!
ReplyDeleteHey ape, when are u going to do a guest post. I've been reading a lot of your comments on other sites, and it sounds like you have quite the collection of evidence you have collected yourself. You think you want to share any of your findings? Doesn't have to be pics/videos (cause we all know what happens to those,) but even a story of your own experiences in the wild.......
ReplyDeleteBe nice to hear about some different experiences.
Paul
I do want to share...and I have been waiting b/c of particular pressure on that ecosystem...my goal was specific to those BFs - as I didn't think I could prove it for the world (well maybe initially!) and I just want that 100 acres saved and put back in wilderness - it's slated for development and is the only riparian spring in that area..a really important forage hunt area... and I am afraid I will not have helped them...
ReplyDeleteSo, yes..someone called with help on sounds files...so we'll see, it seems maybe the time now while we are all waiting to decide if we want to accept a "human" diagnosis!
Just received an invitation to join "LinkedIn" from Dr. Meldrum. Total coincidence and completely unexpected.
ReplyDeleteSounds like your doin a lot of good work Ape, keep it up, and keep us posted. :)
ReplyDeletePaul
lol oh great anon- rub it in! and you w/o a name!
ReplyDeletety paul!
Hey Hi - I want to thank the posters who said they received prompt replies from Dr. Meldrum.
ReplyDeleteI had to think and process the information for a few reasons:
1. had my inquiry been such as to offend or push him away? possibly - it was cavalier in that I wasn't "in" the BF world..my contribution at that point a daytime video...which on my high res monitor and frame by frame showed fairly clearly the hands of a juvenile Bigfoot. So, I did sent immediately a FED-X'd DVD and note..as well as three emails! No reply, no acknowledgment... I blamed myself
2. I continued after that video to "research"in curiosity! Who wouldn't? and b/c of the peculiar situation (a Monster chasing group of BFers in same area quite public) and a friendly group of "camp Bigfoots" which apparently took a shine to me..allowed me to gather data quickly (and without much prior bias.. I was not up on "bigfoots" and all the history of what we think we know and how the "players" hate or like each other and so on) and I stepped on feelings and toes of important BFers in emails I am sure now! Sorry! LOL, but I still would have had the same results..
3. But, the weirdness of Bigfootery - the local University wanting more than I had..and the Forest Service not listening forced me to understand this weird BF world of amateur researchers..with just one apparent Academic on the front lines.. (and no BFer or anyone willing to contact my academic contact...b/c they were competition among themselves!)
4. and I am discovering as the news leaks out..."homo sapien" DNA all along..because Bigfoots are some type of genus Homo something..AND that Dr. Meldrum was the a BIG proponent of an Ape genus, inheited for sure from Krantz (who bty took his shoes off too..but for a PhD that's science!) and BFRO and the other monster guys all reinforcing, marginalizing LTW, etc...and so on...
5. my vid, my attitude, the ole boys of BFing, the Myth, the hoped fame/money all conspired to crush any voice I had to the contrary! MY BAD LOL
I called them Homo indomitus..it was obvious these aren't apes whatever they are....
ooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh
oh oh oh
I notice Meldrum's new movie "Bigfoot- Definitive guide" does broache/introduce his ability to perhaps accept feral human..
so he will adapt and survive! And with his revelations Bigfoots will too!
But, now I wonder if he will please pull out that DVD (I may, back then not have know how to send original file.. I can NOW!) and LOOK AGAIN
he can have all my extrinsic evidence!
so Dr. Meldrum as the fog lifts for us all...and that painful clear light of day wipes away the soft but concealing shadows..
well you must go back and look at some of the sources that pushed you toward ape? what was their motivation? you may have been an unwilling participant in well? what?
Okay obviously I am at a point where I am willing to just ...what...
I am impatient..
and I am confident the truth, the parts that count, for future research will come out!
I am just now figuring it out!!!
Somebody out there has one heck of a future best seller!
