Bigfoot Hunters: How to Split Wood with a Knife

If you're in the great outdoors and need to start a fire, you can use a fixed blade knife to split small logs as long as the knife blade is longer than the diameter of the log. This technique is popular in bushcraft and is known as batoning.

As YouTube user bushtofu shows us in the video above, all you need to baton wood is to place the knife blade in the center of the piece of wood you want to split and then hammer (or baton) the knife with another piece of wood to split the small log.

If you think the guy in the video is using a high-dollar ultra-tough Rambo knife think again; he's actually using a Swedish Mora knife that goes for $10-30 unless you get a fancy one. Batoning should not hurt your knife if done properly.
