Bigfoot Stories Abound In Tollgate

A weekend event in Tollgate brought stories and enthusiasts from all around the area, to share their passion about bigfoot.
TOLLGATE — The group gathered Saturday morning near the summit of the Blue Mountains came to hear stories of Sasquatch.

“Bigfoot tends to get inside people’s heads,” said Richard Cockle of La Grande, the first speaker to stand in front of 30 or so people in the Tollgate Trailfinders Snowmobile Clubhouse and tell his stories.

Cockle is a former journalist who spent decades reporting on Bigfoot stories on and off in his career — primarily in the Blue Mountains. Saturday he spoke of following Sasquatch tracks north of Walla Walla with Wes Sumerlin in 1991 and of the community that’s developed around sharing Bigfoot stories, which are mostly about Bigfoot hunters and their adventures and less about finding the creature, he said.
