Is the Tasmanian Tiger Extinct? Experts Say Maybe Not
The Tasmanian Tiger, or Thylacine, is one of those animals that went extinct but still gets seen on a somewhat regular basis. So is the animal really extinct? Apparently the answer may not be so simple.
"What the museum does is play a subtle game with the truth, they go 'there is no secondary evidence'.
"If you speak to either of the museums when they get scats, they say 'this could be a Tassie tiger'.
"Their question is 'are you going to do DNA for it', and they say they 'don't have the budget'.
"If you go to the museum in Hobart they now use the term 'biological extinction', which is quite a weird argument.
"It means that it has got such a small genetic pool it has very little effect on the local fauna."

DeleteIt would be cool if the Tasmanian Tiger turned out to not be extinct. If it's not extinct, it must be critically endangered.
ReplyDeleteThere have been a number of sightings by people claiming to get a good look at it, even close up in daylight, and there is a chance there might be some. It's often hard to spot creatures like this that are primarily nocturnal. Also, the southern part of the island where most sightings occur is sparsely populated.
DeleteIt could also be that the ones that survived the massive killings in the early 20th century are genetically more elusive, through natural selection, to avoid detection from humans.
