HISTORY's new series, Cryptid: The Swamp Beast, brings legend to life Mondays at 10/9c

Listen up Bigfooters. History channel has a brand new series about a terrifying cryptid. The show airs Mondays at 10/9c, and it's about the legendary swamp beast terrorizing a small bayou town. The show's description is below:

The bayous of Southern Louisiana are home to some of the planet's most rugged and unforgiving terrain. And hidden deep within these swampy confines lie many of America's oldest mysteries and bone-chilling legends. With its ancient Indian burial grounds and above ground cemeteries, the area has always teemed with eerie sightings. In recent years however, there has been a dramatic uptick in strange occurrences, many of them attributed to a legendary werewolf-like creature known as the Rougarou. In History's newest narrative series, residents of a small bayou town must face their darkest fears when something unknown begins to attack, leading to panic and hysteria. When it's believed the culprit is possibly the Rougarou, or Bigfoot of the bayou, the townsfolk will use whatever means necessary, including the dark arts, to ward off the evil. An American folktale comes to life with the story of CRYPTID: THE SWAMP BEAST.

  3. I have seen the first two episodes. While the story is fictional it is based on actual events that took place in this area over several years. I guess History Channel is feeding on the growing public's discourse for the Sasquatch and went this route.

What is neat is they have brought in Dr. Jeff Meldrum for some opinions and statements in each episode so far. For the first time I can remember he actually made the statement saying he is completely confident that the Sasquatch does exist, instead of hedging it in some form as he has done in the past. He pointed to his extensive collection of casts, talked about hair and scat samples coming back as of unknown, or no matches, and the huge amount of actual sightings. Kind of sounds like a Welchman we know. In another clip of an actual recording in this area they cut to Dr. Meldrum who discussed the Sierra Sounds and played two clips from the tapes. He discussed how these tapes have have been analyzed several times and the verdict was legitimate, primate in nature sounds, and some were outside the human range. He also made a statement, from an analysis I had not heard before that it was determined the creature making them was between 8 to 9.5 feet in height. I guess the viewing public on this show is able to get a little education of some of the fabulous evidence that has been collected and more than a few are probably saying WTF - I had no idea.

Anyway the acting is far better than the usual run of the mill SCFY channel stuff, and they come across as believable.

  6. I'm watching the program on Hulu starting with episode 3. The cryptozoologist just happens to have a helicopter on standby when 2 boys apparently wander into the swamp in search of the beast. Another team searches by boat. One of that team is carrying a new Browning shotgun worth about $2K.
Later a dead body mysteriously disappears from the morgue and is seen walking in town. Actually the family took the corpse without permission. This series is better scripted than the average reality show and about as believable. It does have a few informative minutes but they are well buried.
