    1. The Yeren, or Chinese Wildman, is a man-like creature , like bigfoot, that is alleged to live in the mountainous regions of southern and central China. Part of Chinese folklore, the Yeren are mentioned in Chinese literature that dates back more than 2,000 years. The creature is described as between five to seven feet tall with a body covered with red to dark brown fur. The face resembles a cross between an ape’s and a human’s. The yeren is said to leave a large footprints, about 16 inches long, showing a five toe print like humans, but with a structure more like that of apes. Sound familiar? Could be bigfoot being described. There has been history of sightings by scientists and locals for example the biologist Wang Tselin claimed to have examined the body of a Wildman that had been killed in the Gansu region in the 1940’s. He said it was a female specimen around six feet tall, with striking features that appeared to be a cross between ape and human. Then geologist Fan Jingquan reported seeing Wildmen in 1950 ,live and in the flesh, a pair that he thought could be a mother and son, in the forests of the Shanxi province. In 1961, a team of road builders said they had killed a female Yeren in the forests of Xishuang Banna. By the time officials arrived to investigate , the body had disappeared. Twenty years after, a journalist who had been involved in the investigation came forward to claim that the creature killed was an "unknown animal of human shape." A bit late one might think to come forward. Why so long? In May 1976 Six young soldiers from the Shennongiia forestry region were driving along the highway near Chunshuy, a village between Fangxian county and Shennongjia, when they were startled to come across a strange tailless creature covered in reddish fur, illuminated by the headlamps of their car. This report created a great deal of public interest, and people started writing in to report other sightings ,prompting groups of scientists and the army tomounting expeditions into the forest. An expedition of more than 100 members including scientists, photographers and special infiltration teams of soldiers with rifles, tranquillizer dart guns, tape recorders and hunting dogs, searched the area during 1976 and 1977, and hundreds of people where interviewed. They found no definite evidence. The expedition party moved near to what was thought to be one of the creatures, before the beast could be captured a rather nervous soldier accidentally shot himself in the leg, this brought people running and must have frightened any animal away. Another lot of expeditions set off between 1980 and 1985 near Songbai in Shennongjia forest. More than two hundred footprints were collected on Mount Quiangdao .The footprints found on the first occasion were 48 cm in length, with an average stride of 2.5 m. No actual wild men were photographed but eye witness reports were collected.

    2. Reports still appear regularly in the newspapers:

      From : (China.org.cn by Chen Xia, November 20, 2007)

Two giant ape-like creatures were spotted in the afternoon of November 18, 2007, in Shennongjia, an area famous for the legendary “Bigfoot” Wild Man [or Yeren] located in central China’s Hubei Province. Four independently traveling tourists claimed that they were almost face to face with two Wild Men while touring around the Licha River, at the northern foot of Laojun Mountain. If their words prove to be true, the tourists will be the first eyewitnesses of “Bigfoot” in southeast Shennongjia Nature Reserve in recent years.

According to a Changjiang Times report on November 20, Zhang Jinxing, a scientist conducting investigations in the Shennongjia Nature Reserve, reported the thrilling event to relevant local authorities in the afternoon of November 19. When Zhang had finished his investigation that morning, he came across four independently traveling tourists, two men and two women, in a Land-Rover. These tourists told him that they had seen two Wild Men [Yeren] around the Licha River in the morning of November 18. They were near a sharp curve on the mountain road when three of the four, two men and one woman, spotted two giant, dark figures standing behind a tangled mass of shrubbery some 50 meters away from their car. It seemed that the two creatures didn’t see the car at first, but they soon fled into the dense forest. Later that day, the tourists reported the event to the Lichahe Forest Maintenance Station and came back to the spot with two forest rangers. At this time, they only found a few footprints, branches they believed were broken by the wild men and wild fruits scattered on the ground.

Since the Lichahe Forest Maintenance Station is situated in a remote area in the Shennongjia Nature Reserve, local authorities didn’t receive the report in a timely fashion. Currently, the proper authorities are busy contacting the four eyewitnesses and an investigation team has been sent out along the Licha River to conduct a thorough investigation. Local authorities have promised to announce investigation results as soon as possible.

And people continue to research the Yeren. See this article from The Los Angeles Times Article ; April 19, 2000

BEIJING -- Yuan Zhenxin keeps up his search for Bigfoot. Yuan is convinced that between 1,000 and 2,000 of the apelike creatures roam the forests of central China, particularly the Shennongjia Nature Reserve in Hubei province.

    3. "They're very clever," said Yuan, a retired paleoanthropologist and member of the prestigious Chinese Academy of Sciences. Yuan describes Bigfoot as more than 6 1/2 feet tall, with reddish brown hair, long limbs and a rather nasty case of body odor.

In 1976-77, the government sponsored a Bigfoot expedition to Shennongjia consisting of 100 people, including army personnel.

That trip and others yielded numerous samples of what Yuan maintains are the hair, footprints and faeces of an undiscovered species, possibly descended from a giant ape whose fossilized teeth can still be found in the region.

"They're a cousin of humans," he said of Bigfoot, known in Chinese as "wild man."

But money for such study has dwindled, because fewer and fewer of Yuan's fellow scientists are willing to approve funding without more conclusive proof.

Yuan and his supporters have been forced to dig into their own pockets to keep three informal research centers operating. One of Yuan's colleagues even divorced his wife, sold his home and moved permanently to Shennongjia to carry on the work.

There are reports from around the world of various types of bigfoot or wildmen . I find it interesting that they so similar. Could a species of unknown ape or a branch of human and ape hybrid still exist in wild places? Only concrete evidence will ever answer that question. Sadly there is no sign of that at the moment and little money to fund the research.

    4. In a recent article by Wang Xiaodong in China Daily, 62 year old Li Guohua, Yeren researcher for over three decades, shares the secret to finding the legendary "Wild Man" of the mountains of Shennongjia. Having dedicated almost half his life to finding the creature, he was rewarded with an unforgettable encounter and several sightings. According to Li, "To find a Wildman, you have to become a Wildman first. Like wild animals, the Wildman's senses are more acute than human beings and they can easily detect an approaching person." Li often scoffs at teams of scientists who undertake expeditions to find the creature from time to time saying, "These guys will never find anything new like a Wildman as they make too much noise, even if they are well equipped. To find a Wildman, you have to live in the mountains and merge with nature."

"Merging with nature" has been Li's practice for 30 years and it seems to have paid off for him as he claims to have had several sightings of the creature and one memorable encounter.

      Li's encounter:

"It was the moment that I can never forget," he says of his first encounter with the beast, on Feb 28, 1980. The Wildman appeared to be chasing him, Li says, possibly because it thought he was prey.

"I hid behind some trees and tried hard to contain my violently beating heart, closing my eyes for a while hoping I could see it more clearly later," he says.

As the creature came nearer, he could see clearly it resembled both a man and an ape. It was about 2.6 meters tall, with red hair all over its body, no tail, two arms waving as it walked like a man. He was horrified but even so aimed his gun and pulled the trigger. But it failed to fire, as the charge was damp. He did not have a camera. The creature turned around and ran swiftly toward a bamboo forest.

"Seeing the creature disappear, I collapsed on the snowy ground."

Unfortunately, Li has no proof of his claims

"Although I have seen the Wildman several times, I couldn't record it because it escaped too fast, and I didn't have a good camera to record faraway objects. Besides, it is too exhausting for a single man to search in such a large area."

"I hope I can find a sponsor and some volunteers so that I can continue with the search," Li says. "I have devoted all my life to the search and I hope I can put an end to this mystery so that I can be relieved before the end of my life." Li has published a book about his experiences and continues to follow up on sighting reports in his research area.

    5. (USA This Week; 10/10/2010) Scientists in China's Hubei Province have announced that they would soon launch a new research to track down the elusive creature named Bigfoot. The Hubei Wild Man Research Association (HWMRA) has asked researchers from outside to join the group's search in the Shennongjia forest region, reported Xinhua.

Talking to Xinhua, Luo Baosheng, vice president of the HWMRA, said that the organization is comprised of more than 100 scientists and explorers, who are looking for the Bigfoot, an ape-like animal, for years. "Most importantly, we want the team members to be devoted, as there will be a lot of hard work in the process," Luo told Xinhua. Team members are also expected to be in good physical health and preferably 25 to 40 years of age, he added.

The Bigfoot is also known as "Yeren" or "Wild Man" in China and its search will cost at least USD 1.5 million, said Wang Shancai, a member of the the group and an archaeologist with the Hubei Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology. The group has approached various companies and institutions to seek funding for their research, Wang added.

"Unlike expeditions three decades ago, the better technological support will help us get closer to solving the mystery. We are now working together with the China Three Gorges University to develop long-time energy-supply devices to support cameras that will be installed in the ape man's possible habitat," noted Wang.

Chinese researchers have been searching for the Bigfoot since the 1970s and the search for Yeti, another name for the creature, is not restricted to China only. People in the United States have been looking for Yeti, also known as Sasquatch.

    6. (CNN 10/09/2010) -- Wanted: Patient person. Physically fit, with basic knowledge of biology. Able to take pictures.
      Job: Find Bigfoot.
Scientists in China's Hubei Province have announced they are looking for additional members for its special team tasked with tracking down the creature.
The Hubei Wild Man Research Association (HWMRA) is recruiting researchers internationally to join the group's search in the Shennongjia forest region, according to state-run news agency Xinhua.

Luo Baosheng, vice president of the HWMRA, told Xinhua that the organization is comprised of more than 100 scientists and explorers who have been chasing the ape-like animal for years. The last time a organized search took place was in the early 1980s, Xinhua reported Saturday.

"Most importantly, we want the team members to be devoted, as there will be a lot of hard work in the process," Luo told Xinhua. Team members are also expected to be in good physical health and preferably 25 to 40 years of age, he added.
The search for the phantom, known as the "Yeren" or "Wild Man" in China, will cost at least $1.5 million U.S. dollars, according to Wang Shancai, a member of the the group and an archaeologist with the Hubei Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology. The group is seeking funding from various companies and institutions, Wang said.

Chinese researchers have been searching since the 1970s. There have been more than 400 reported sightings of the half-man, half-ape in the Shennongjia area. In the past, explorers have found inconclusive evidence that researchers claimed to be proof of Bigfoot's existence, including hair, footprints, excrement and a sleeping nest, Xinhua reported.

Witnesses say the creature walks upright like a human but is much taller, and is covered in hair head-to-toe.

The search for Yeti is not restricted to China.

People in the United States have been looking for years. The Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO) claims it's the oldest and largest organization with the goal of finding Bigfoot, also known as Sasquatch. The organization relies heavily on eyewitness reports from residents.

According to BFRO's website, the animal began to be referred to as Bigfoot by journalists in the 1950s after a spat of sightings reported in northern California.

    7. WUHAN, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- A "Bigfoot" research association in central China's Hubei Province said Saturday it plans to launch a global recruitment drive seeking members of a high-profile search team for the ape-like creature in the Shennongjia Forest Region.

The association, made up of more than 100 scientists and explorers, is hoping the expedition could end the long-running debate on the existence of the legendary half-human, half-ape figure, nearly 30 years after the last organized expedition to seek the mysterious beast in the early 1980s, said Luo Baosheng, vice president of the Hubei Wild Man Research Association.

Altogether more than 400 people have claimed to have seen Bigfoot in the Shennongjia area, but no hard evidence has been found to prove its existence.

According to witnesses, the creature walks upright, is more than 2 meters tall as an adult and has a gray, red or black hairy body.

The team members should be between 25 and 40 years old. With good physical health, they should also have a basic knowledge of biology and know how to use a camera, said Luo.

Preference would be given to those who have outdoor experience.

"Most importantly, we want the team members to be devoted, as there will be a lot a hard work in the process," he said.

However, there is no specific timetable yet for the expedition as the association is still in talks with several companies and institutions about the funding of the expedition which will cost at least 10 million yuan (about 1.5 million U.S. dollars), said Wang Shancai, an archaeologist with the Hubei Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, who is also a member of the association.

Located deep in the remote mountains in Hubei, Shennongjia Nature Reserve has long been rumored to be the home of the elusive creature known in China as the "Yeren," or "Wild Man."

China organized three high-profile scientific expeditions for Bigfoot through the 1970s and 1980s. Researchers found hair, a footprint, excrement and a sleeping nest that were said to be Bigfoot's, but none of which could conclusively prove its existence.

    8. Reuters) - A group of Chinese scientists and explorers is looking for international help to mount a new search for the country's answer to Bigfoot, known locally as the "Yeren," or "wild man."

Over the years, more than 400 people have claimed sightings of the half-man, half-ape Yeren in a remote, mountainous area of the central province of Hubei, state news agency Xinhua said on Saturday.

Expeditions in the 1970s and 1980s yielded hair, a footprint, excrement and a sleeping nest suspected of belonging to the Yeren, but there has been no conclusive proof, the report added.

Witnesses describe a creature that walks upright, is more than 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) tall and with grey, red or black hair all over its body, Xinhua said.

Now the Hubei Wild Man Research Association is looking for volunteers from around the world to join them on another expedition to look for the Yeren.

"We want the team members to be devoted, as there will be a lot a hard work in the process," Luo Baosheng, vice president of the group, told Xinhua.

But the team will have to come up with about 10 million yuan ($1.50 million) first, and is talking to companies and other bodies to secure the funding, so there is no timetable yet for when they may start, the report added.

China is no stranger to cryptozoology. Tales abound of mysterious, Loch Ness monster-like creatures living in lakes in remote parts of the country.

Tibetans have also long talked about the existence of the Yeti, or "Abominable Snowman," in the high mountains of their snowy homeland.

    9. Below is an article from China.org.cn: and of course at the end of the article is our entry on our international Bigfoot variants map
Researchers will start exploring large areas of primitive forest this month in the Shennongjia region of central China's Hubei province, local authorities said Sunday.

A group of 38 experts from several universities and research institutions will begin the expedition on July 8, according to a statement from the Shennongjia Nature Reserve's management bureau.
The trip is scheduled to last through August, the statement said.
The group will focus on studying the region's animals, plants and land features and will publish its research results later, it said.
Located deep in the remote mountains of Hubei, the Shennongjia Nature Reserve has long been rumored to be the home of an elusive creature known in China as the "Yeren," or "Wild Man" in English. It is also referred to as "Bigfoot" after the legendary North American ape-man.
More than 400 people have claimed to have seen the Yeren in the Shennongjia area over the past century, but no hard evidence has been found to prove the creature's existence.
With abundant rain and water resources, Shennongjia is home to more than 3,700 species of plants and at least 1,050 kinds of animals. At least 40 of its plant species and 70 of its animal species are under state protection.
The region is also home to the rare golden monkey, which is on the verge of extinction and was first spotted in Shennongjia in the 1960s.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) added Shennongjia to its World Network of Biosphere Reserves in 1990.

    10. On the evening of May 14th in 1976 six local Chinese government bureaucrats drove down a rural highway in the Hubei province. As they passed Chunshuy, a village between Fangxian county and Shennongjia, they came across a creature illuminated by the car headlights. The creature was described as being tailless with red fur and recognized immediately as the Chines Wildman a/k/a Yeren.

The Yeren made an attempt to flee, climbing a nearby embankment and escaping into the darkness. The climb was unsuccessful and the creature fell back into the glare of the headlights, crouching on all fours.

Startled, a passenger threw a rock at the creature from behind and the creature ran off, this time successfully escaping from sight.

This initiated a great degree of public interest, people writing in to report other sightings and groups of scientists and the army mounting expeditions into the forest. A massive expedition by the Chinese Academy of Sciences included a team of over a hundred members of scientists, photographers and soldiers. The team was equipped with rifles, tranquilizer dart guns, tape recorders and hunting dogs, worked in the area during 1976 and 1977, interviewing hundreds of people. Together with army scouts and commune members, the team organized several large searches, but (as is usual with such expeditions) they found nothing definite. At one point the expedition search party moved near to one of the creatures; unfortunately 'before the beast could be captured an anxious soldier accidentally shot himself in the leg. The shot brought expedition members scurrying in from all directions and presumably frightened the creature away.

      Introduction

During late May and early June of 1995 the author spent 17 days in the People's Republic of China with Japan Television Workshop making a documentary on the Yeren or Wildman. One of our projects while there was participate in an expedition to Yuan Bau Mountain, in the Kwangsi Chuang Autonomous Region of southern China, to interview two natives of the Miao nationality who had claimed recent Yeren sightings. This was an international expedition composed of about ten Chinese, three scientists from Taiwan, a five-member Japanese TV crew, and myself, an American anthropologist. About 15 local Miao served as porters up down the mountain for most of our baggage and supplies. The primary objective was the Yeren story, though the scientists from Taiwan were there to study the flora, fauna, and human use of the region. Zhou Guoxing, a paleoanthropologist at the Beijing Natural History Museum (and an old friend of mine), was in overall charge of the Yeren investigation. He and I, and our conversations, were a major focus of camera crew. Keiko Yamada was in charge of the crew. Yasu was the cameraman, and their assistants were Muro and Ao; they were known to only by their first names. Kanako Onishi was our invaluable Japanese/Chinese/English translator. We taped additional fieldwork and interviews in the U.S., and supporting material was filmed in Japan and Vietnam without me. The first version of the documentary, in Japanese, appeared in early 1996; an English version is pending.

    12. Narrative Description

Our group left a comfortable hotel in the city of Liu Zhou in a small bus and supply truck to drive north, then west, over roads of gradually decreasing quality. The distance we covered was about 190 miles (300 km), and took about six hours. We spent our first night in a traditional Miao village that had been little influenced by modern civilization. From there, the expedition spent most of the next three days hiking up to the highest inhabited village on the south face of the Yuan Bau Mountain, spending the nights in other villages along the way. The friendliness and hospitality of the local people was striking, though the facilities were primitive. In terms of time and effort expended, about one-third was spent walking along narrow (12 inch/30-cm) terrace walls around the rice fields, one-third climbing steep steps from one terrace up to another, and one-third walking along typical mountain trails of various inclinations. On all difficult places, a young Chinese man pulled me by one hand from in front, and another firmly pushed me from behind; given my size and age (63 years), there was no other way I could have kept up with the group. I was by far the largest person present at 6 ft, 2 inches (189 cm) and 202 lb. (92 kg). With, in addition, a full beard, a projecting nose, and pinkish skin, I was rather conspicuous. There were many jokes — often initiated by me — about my possible identification as a Wildman.

Our major goal was to interview two Miao men who had reportedly seen Yerens (yeh-rens) within the previous few months, and to examine the places and circumstances where these sightings had occurred. Zhou Guoxing conducted most of this investigation. A translator was necessary because Zhou did not speak Miao, and the two eyewitnesses did not speak Mandarin or any other form of Chinese. The Japanese crew documented this investigation in detail. My primary part in this activity was to ask the witnesses some specific questions about the anatomy of what were evidently two different Yeren. This was complicated by the fact that no one present spoke both English and Miao. My questions in English were addressed to the Japanese translator; she then translated them into Mandarin for the local forest ranger/policeman, who then translated them into Miao for the native witnesses. The answers came back through the same two intermediaries. Given this complication, I chose to ask just one simple question at a time, and to illustrate the point in each case with my own body. Also, each question was put in terms of a simple contrast, such as "taller/shorter," with no hint as to what I might have wanted or expected to hear. This may have been intimidating to the witnesses because I towered over them, outweighed them at least two to one, was notably hairy, spoke an incomprehensible language, and appeared to command the respect of the entire assembly. We all agreed later that this imposing show, which I played to the hilt, probably helped induce these men to report their observations as accurately as possible.

    13. Some of the important information we gained is as follows: The creatures stood fully erect like a human. In both cases, the Yeren were about 6 feet, 6 inches (2 m) tall (4 inches/l0 cm taller than me), although only one of these was measured against a clear background reference. The legs were of human proportions relative to their stature. The arms seemed only somewhat elongated. The shoulders were relatively wider than mine, but not extremely so. The face was impressively large — one witness stressed its height, the other its width. The level of the chin was above that of the shoulder, a very human trait. (I had the impression that this last question might have been misunderstood, or the translation switched the answer, and the true situation might have been just the opposite.) There was little projection of the nose. Interestingly, the forehead rose up above the eyes like in humans rather than back like in the gorilla (of which they were somehow aware). The abdomen did not notably protrude. Both men indicated that their Yeren was a male, but no reason for this judgment reached me through the translators.

The closest sighting was when one man stepped to the door of his house and saw the Yeren standing outside within 10 feet (3 m) from him. It looked at him briefly, then turned and walked away in a human manner. The other sighting, from farther away, was of a crouched Yeren which stood fully upright when it was aware of the man, and which then dropped back down to all fours and ran off. According to the imitation by this witness, it did not put weight on its hands, but moved or swept them alternately along the ground as if brushing objects away to each side. My impression was that it may have been pressing against clumps of vegetation to aid its progress in an uphill direction.

Over the last few years, Zhou Guoxing had become increasingly skeptical of the usefulness of Wildman reports from people of the dominant Han nationality of China. He felt that too many of them were simply passing on — or inventing — the kind of stories that the investigators wanted to hear. In this case, however, he was much more confident that the Miao people were reporting what they had actually seen. These people are noted for their honesty in general, especially in the more "primitive" regions, as this one certainly was. We also understood that local folklore included the belief that it was dangerous to talk about seeing the Yeren; obviously, this idea did not weigh too heavily on the minds of these two men. That they received only nominal reward for their cooperation removes one other kind of motivation.

The combined descriptions from these observers did not fit especially well with the usual Sasquatch (Bigfoot) picture from North America. Their Yeren were somewhat shorter and relatively less massive in body build; the long red hair, especially on the arms, was unexpected; and the high forehead did not fit at all. These traits, however, all fit comfortably with the idea of an erect, habitually bipedal relative of the orang-utan. The descriptions collected by Frank E. Poirier (1989, Further Investigations Into the Reported Yeren — The Wildman of China, Cryptozoology, Vol. 8: 47-57) are fully consistent with these accounts, even to including some quadrupedal progression.

After getting their descriptions, I showed the Miao observers a videotape of the best part of the 1967 Patterson film on a small, portable screen. They immediately proclaimed that it was the same creature they had seen, and watched the tape several more times. They seemed unconcerned that the film subject was clearly more heavy set, darker colored, and shorter haired; it is difficult to believe that they did not notice these differences, although they could be excused for not noticing its more retreating forehead and low set mouth. What I think happened is that, in both cases, they saw massive, hairy, human-like bodies with swinging arms and wide shoulders that moved in a ponderous manner. Aside from the obvious traits of bipedal anatomy and hairiness, I think these eyewitnesses were mainly seeing body movements that were not quite human in the same ways.

For the Yeren seen walking away, this might have included a bent knee in the support leg, extra high lifting of the foot beginning the swing phase, and a slightly forward inclination of the torso — all of which I found in studying the Patterson film. Given that Patterson's subject, an evident female, was about the same height as the male creatures these men had seen, and only somewhat heavier, a similar locomotion might well be expected. These men made many more comments while watching the video that were not translated for me. For all I know, they could have been noting all the differences that have been pointed out above, or they could have missed them entirely. Social circumstances precluded any further questioning by me as to the details.

During our entire time in Miao country, I was closely noting the topography and vegetation, as well as the people themselves. There was almost no flat land; the local people had built rice-field terraces wherever possible, but these did not cover anywhere near 10 percent of the land surface. I was told that much of the original forest on the hillsides used to be denser than it is presently. On the other hand, many areas had such thin soil that few, if any, trees could ever have grown there. The original forest had included some trees that were considerably larger than any that can be seen today. A few tree trunks up to 20 inches (50 cm) in diameter are incorporated into the buildings. These probably were never very common, as so few of them could be seen. My conclusion was that the original condition of the area would not be classed as tropical rain forest in the sense that a continuous arboreal canopy had not existed. Furthermore, there were enough deciduous trees to make the arboreal food supply less than a year-round bounty.

The significance of the natural vegetation becomes evident when one tries to imagine orang-utans living there. The terrain and vegetation clearly would not support a population of great apes which were fully arboreal. Any such apes would have to spend at least half of their time on the ground, either feeding there or traveling from one location to another. Any orang-utans under such circumstances must have a well-developed terrestrial form of locomotion, which could be either quadrupedal fist walking or erect bipedalism. The latter has been well described by the native people, who would not likely have thought through these ecological factors.

    15. Hundreds of fossil teeth have been found in many places in southern China that are clearly identified, as orang-utan, but no other skeletal remains of them are known. These teeth are not distinguishable from those of the modern species, except that they are significantly larger. If one adds longer legs to modern orang-utans they still would not stand 6 feet, 6 inches (2 m ) tall, so this kind of Yeren from southern China is still substantially larger than the living Indonesian species of orang-utan. One might speculate that all or most of the fossil teeth actually come from the large, terrestrial kind of orang-utan that the local people seem to be currently reporting. There also two pieces of fossil jaws from Java, with some especially ape-like traits; that are usually classed as being early hominid. I have long considered these to be more likely from deviant orang-utans, possibly with erect posture; they may be Yeren.

It does not appear possible to equate the southern Chinese Yeren with the Sasquatch of North America; the differences have been noted above. Neither is it reasonable to relate it to the Gigantopithecus teeth and jaws; fossils are too large, and we already have orang-utan teeth that are a match. Whether Sasquatch in North America is a surviving Gigantopithecus is quite another matter, and outside the purview of this report. What is pertinent here is that there appear to be at least two different, unverified higher primates that commonly use bipedal locomotion.

Up to now, I have been loosely referring to this kind of "wildman" (there might be others) as a form of bipedally adapted orang-utan. It is worth least some speculation as to just how closely it is related to the living species. The locomotor adaptations of bipedalism in the African sequence carry with them the taxonomic level of a family's worth of distinction. In that case, we are contrasting not only the first bipeds, but also its greatly modified descendants; with the somewhat less modified apes that continued as brachiators. When that African ape first adopted occasional bipedalism, it probably would have been classifiable as no more than a good species away from its non-bipedal relatives. The higher level of taxonomic distinction is a consequence of how much evolution has occurred since that particular speciation event.

In the case of Yeren vs. orang-utan, we appear to be dealing with a locomotor contrast like that which separated the first australopithecine from the ancestral African ape. Disregarding whatever future evolution might occur, this initial "step" need not be ranked as anything more than a species worth of distinction at that time.

      Delete
    16. Given the distinct anatomy that we see in the australopithecine hips, knees, and feet, it would appear that similar distinctions should occur in the Yeren as well. Even if half of their locomotor behavior continued as brachiation, the added terrestrial modifications should still be ranked as a significant locomotory change. Most anatomists would probably weigh changes of this magnitude as worth at least a generic distinction. On the other hand, the length and color of the hair are so specific that one would not expect them to continue, unchanged, across a generic quantity of change.

It is quite possible that we are here dealing with just a new species, in which case the name Pongo erectus would be appropriate. This name is far superior to the old Pithecanthropus erectus, which clearly implied that there were, or at least could be, other species of that genus that were not erect; changing its generic assignment to Homo did not alter that illogical situation. In this case, the erectus label is a clear and specific distinction from Pongo pygmaeus, which is not erect. I see no compelling need to create a new genus name for the Chinese Wildman, but just in case, Yeren is offered here. The species might be called Yeren sinensis. If the first definitive specimen of this kind should come from Indonesia, rather than China, the generic name Sedapa might be appropriate, and Sedapa sinensis would be the name for a Chinese species (if distinct).

    17. This month, nearly 40 scientists will enter a wild and remote region of western China, reports China's state media Xinhua. Spending several weeks in Shennongjia Nature Reserve, the researchers hope to study rare species like the golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana), which is listed as Endangered by the IUCN Red List. But the forest is also the source of China's 'wild man' sightings; known locally as the 'Yeren,' the unconfirmed primate has also been dubbed China's Bigfoot. The Shennongjia Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, is home to 3,700 plants and over 1,000 animals, including leopards (Panthera paradus), the Asian golden cat (Pardofelis temminckii), the golden pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus), and the Chinese giant salamander (Megalobatrachus davidianus), which is considered Critically Endangered as well as being listed as number two by the EDGE program in a catalog of the world's 100 most endangered and evolutionary unique amphibians. The reserve may also still harbor the South China tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis), which hasn't been sighted in the wild for around 40 years. Many scientists believe the South China tiger to be extinct in the wild and conservation plans have now shifted to reintroducing the subspecies. According to Xinhua, over 400 people have also reported seeing the Yeren, or Chinese wild man, in these rugged montane forests. However, much like the Yeti of the Himalayas and the Sasquatch of North America, the species has never been confirmed by scientists and remains in the realm of legend and cryptozoology.

    18. North America has its 'Bigfoot' and China has its 'Wild Man.' A group of Chinese scientists are on the hunt for the Yeren, the Chinese equivalent of our Bigfoot. Scientists and international researchers refer to the Yeren as "Wild Man" and are on a renewed quest to find him. Thirty years ago, China's Academy of Science sent three teams of researchers looking for the mysterious creature. Those teams turned up surprising results: hair, excrement, footprints, and a possible 'Wild Man' sleeping nest. Alas, those findings weren't conclusive so they are at it again. This time around the members of the Hubei Wild Man Research Association are hoping to collect donations to help catch the legendary creature. They need $1.5 million to kick off the project. This research is not without its merits. Over the years people have reported 400 sightings of a reddish hair ape-like man that looks a lot like an Orangutan but stands nearly 7ft tall. Nicholas Redfern, one of the world's leading cryptozoologists, thinks this newest expedition in China is worthwhile because of the fossil record. "A lot of monster stories can be traced back to myth and folk lore. What people don't know is that in this instance we actually have the fossil record of a large ape-like creature that lived in that area over 300,000 years ago," Redfern told FoxNews.com. In fact, primatologists have jaw bones, teeth and other bones from a creature found in that area known as Gigantopithecus that would've measured nearly 9ft tall (but probably hunched like an ape). Redfern has been involved in countless research expeditions and they've all had one thing in common: lack of funds. "It'd be great if we could have a team that could go out there for a year," he told FoxNews.com. "The chances of going into the forest for one week and stumbling across something are very slim. It's like the people who go to Loch Ness for a day or two hoping to see the monster; it just doesn't happen." So even if the Hubei Wild Man Research Association raises enough money for a prolonged expedition, is it possible this creature still roams the forests of Asia? "Conventional science and zoology tells us that Gigantopithecus has long been extinct, but very often science gets it wrong. The final word isn't always the final word," Redfern said.

    19. Yesterday, “Bigfoot,” the legendary hairy beast countless witnesses claim to have seen but to date has eluded capture, reportedly was spotted by six people in the Shennongjia Nature Reserve in China. Agence France-Presse quotes the state-run Xinhua news agency as having reported the sighting in central China’s Hubei province. According to the report, local lore has it the nature reserve is well-known as a Bigfoot dwelling place. Beijing organized several high-profile searches for the creature in the ’80s and ’90s, but no hard evidence of his existence was found, says AFP. The report says the six witnesses describe what they saw as a grayish “mythical ape-like animal,” about five feet tall with shoulder-length black hair. One of the six, radio reporter Shang Zhengmin, says Bigfoot was spotted as he and his companions took a left turn on a mountain road, the news agency reported. He said the “ape-like” animal was moving fast on the road and by the time the vehicle finished the turn, the creature had disappeared. The occupants of the vehicle then stopped and reportedly discovered several footprints about 30 centimeters long. The AFP report says the group also claimed to have discovered a patch of “foul smelling urine-like liquid” on the road where the creature was seen.

    20. BEIJING (Reuters) - A group of Chinese scientists and explorers is looking for international help to mount a new search for the country's answer to Bigfoot, known locally as the "Yeren," or "wild man." Over the years, more than 400 people have claimed sightings of the half-man, half-ape Yeren in a remote, mountainous area of the central province of Hubei, state news agency Xinhua said on Saturday. Expeditions in the 1970s and 1980s yielded hair, a footprint, excrement and a sleeping nest suspected of belonging to the Yeren, but there has been no conclusive proof, the report added. Witnesses describe a creature that walks upright, is more than 2 meters (6 ft 7 in) tall and with grey, red or black hair all over its body, Xinhua said.

    21. Reports from central China hint at yet more evidence that the so-called “Shennongjia Wildman” may actually exist. Shennongjia, in China's Hubei province, is one of the country's most rugged areas featuring mountains up to 9,840 ft (3,000 meters) tall and thick old-growth forests. The Shennongjia National Nature Reserve (神农架国家自然保护区), listed on UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves, protects a number of rare creatures including the endangered Golden Monkey but perhaps another, much larger primate may live there as well. A number of sightings, supposed footprints, and samples of coarse hair have hinted at the possibility of a bigfoot-like creature existing deep in the wilds of Shennongjia. Anecdotal evidence paints a picture of a very tall, bipedal, ape-like animal with thick reddish or yellowish hair. The latest report comes from Wang Taizhao, a local villager and farmer from nearby Chengkou county who was fertilizing his corn field early on the morning of June 2nd. “I was so scared,” said Wang in his statement to local police. “First I heard a strange noise from the woods near my corn field, which I thought to be the bark of a dog. Then I spotted a human-like creature approaching. I took a flight to my house with great haste.”A number of sightings, supposed footprints, and samples of coarse hair have hinted at the possibility of a bigfoot-like creature existing deep in the wilds of Shennongjia. Piecing together a description of the purported creature from Wang's recollection, investigators from the Public Security Bureau of Chengkou county estimated the creature was from 160cm to 170 cm tall (approximately 5.5 ft) and was covered head to toe with red and yellowish hair. It left at least 5 large, irregular footprints in Wang's cornfield, several of which were distinct enough to allow the investigators to create several plaster casts. While the discovery of a few big footprints doesn't mean we've found a few bigfoot prints, this latest piece of the puzzle brings us a bit closer to what the “Shennongjia Wildman” may – or may not – be.
And to those who are rushing to add another branch to the human family tree, all we can suggest is “not yeti.” (via Global Times, main image via A Very Fairy Garden )

      Delete
    47. Science is handled like this... It refuses to contribute, or at least in the Western world it does. The reason you have had no published scientific studies in Yeren research could be because there is a communist block. My point you eluded to, probably because you are too dense, is that in no way shape or form has there been an avenue for your theory group to even scoff at such a paper, so you therefore have just as much claim to anything as we do.

      Delete
    48. Again you're confusing how the scientific world works. I do not represent a "theory group". YOU believe in Bigfoot, YOU bring the evidence that proves it. No more no less. I do not have nothing to do with Bigfoot. A theory is made when you claim the existence of something undiscovered, not when you want to claim the non existence of something that it is supposed to be non existent. How can you come up with this logic? Then I could come up with papers regarding the non existence of unicorns, or dragons, or flying dogs, you'd have as much ground as you wish.

But the scientific method works in this way: observation, making assumptions that bring to an hypothesis regarding the existence of a chemical/physical/biological process or being, demonstration of the hypothesis with phyisical, empirical and undeniable data. Bring the third part and everyone here will accept Bigfoot. If no one does it, it's because until now there has been nothing like empirical and physical data. And no, sorry to ruin your day, but third party accounts or folklore stories does not count.

  7. Morning Joe. I appreciate the info. provided above. I have not looked into the Yeren very much, but what I have learned it seems to be either the same as the NA Bigfoot or some type of cousin. The guy looking for an oragatung relative is looking in the wrong direction in my opinion. It seems the yeren can obtain the mass of the NA Bigfoot, however in general in most sightings are a bit shorter and not quite as thick. Maybe this is a factor of a warmer climate or diet, Don't know. On of the witnesses on Finding Bigfoot last night put his yeren in the area of Bobo, but maybe not as thick, but of course moved much quicker and faster.

The one big difference is the Chinese (and their government) take this very serious, while we know how it is not given much respect here. The Finding Bigfoot crew were quick to point this out last night. They interviewed at least one of the people mentioned in your reports above and went to the sightings. In one scene there was writing on a large mountainside rock. The witness said this was were his sighting was. The government in the area put up the writing which said Wildman Spotted here or something to that effect.

It does seem to me that we are talking of a much smaller cousin to the NA equivalent, doesn't it? The climate could account for that like you suggested. The characteristics and some behavioural references are quite amazing and a dead ringer and it is always really cool to come across consistency in reports from other countries. The government out there have been into this for years and years and I have a feeling that there is information we are not aware of half of it due to the communist block, for example.

      Peace Chuck.

      Delete
    2. Well Joe, I would not say much smaller, just smaller. They still are larger than humans in height and muscular build, however it seems to me that the NA bigfoot and especially the higher latitude ones seem to be the giants of this family. Other than that the appearance and habits and traits seem the same. I suspect but it is only an opinion that these creatures originated in this area or migrated to it as a safe sanctuary many thousands of years ago, and then some eventually migrated the Bearing Sea Land Bridge during the ice ages and adapted a somewhat larger build as it is beneficial in colder climates. The Chinese provincial governments are much more open to it, but lack funds to do much serious research. I think you are probably right about information that has suppressed by past and maybe present Communist. As good as the U S and western governments can be about suppression, the communist have proven to be the masters at it. nothing beats having a gun pointed at your head and family to keep things quiet.

  13. I was at my local big box store last Saturday when I saw this in the magazine/book section:

    http://www.amazon.com/Finding-Bigfoot-Everything-Animal-Planet/dp/1250040906/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1385999369&sr=8-4&keywords=bigfoot

  14. Joe, I don't know what good it does to paste and paste and paste...I never read anything you post any more; whatever point you are trying to make just gets swallowed up in the mind-numbing volume of text you paste. I do read most other posts here because I would love it if something as strange and amazing as Bigfoot existed but I don't think your strategy is doing anything but preaching to the believers.

Please don't see this as an attack on you, just some constructive criticism. OK?

    3. Joe. Adam Davies has been rumored to have joined the WWFs hunt for the Sumatran Tiger simply to verify that they indeed have a type specimen for Orang Pendek on ice if you will pending the outcome of their tiger research efforts. Joe. You have the resources and dogged determination to uncover the truth to this story if there is any. I would be willing after reading your comments to join the expedition for the Yeren If I survive this pneumonia. Which I won't. Have you heard anything about Davies or can you contact him and can you put me in touch with the Chinese government and get me the Chinese version of hooked on phonics. That's phonics Joe. I've done quite enough research into hooked on chronic. From my death bed. M

    4. Of course you don't care. You are nothing but a spammer.

    5. And Joe. If you can't do any of those things could you fed ex me some of Adam Davies' preferred whiskey and a box of Panda Express for lunch. I'm quite prepared to lower my expectations as I inch closer to that great Marvel Universe in the sky?

  15. So when Joe goes off the rails and just cuts and pastes is that not him spamming the forum? This is generally considered bad form online and often can result in bans on boards.

Now I am not calling for a ban here. Let me make that clear. But I am asking that Joe show a little decent behavior. It is nothing more than common courtesy.

Is that to much too ask? I think not. But if you must persist can you at least try to make your spam on topic?

    1. Seriously. Good luck with that though because he'll just get all bitchy and nasty with you because all that matters in his world are Joe Fitzgerald and arguing.

I say the best way to get rid of it is just ignoring him completely. Anytime he posts, every single post don't engage him. Don't talk to him, don't even mention his name or he'll come running.

Or we take this house party somewhere else.

    2. Ok. I'm with you guys. From henceforth it's the drunk Welshman who shall not be named. Or. I'm open to other suggestions. Has anyone got any suggestions on a monicker for you know who?

    3. Oh. And where are we going. I went to Chucks house the other day at Bigfoot Buzz and I caught myself trying to pretend to be smarter than I was and adopting a different personality. Then I realized I was dressed in khakis and using a different dialect?

    4. How about, hmmmm, KING KUT (and paste). Or. The Bigfoot Papertrail. Naaaaa. I'm reaching. Truth is I'm depressed because I'm ill. There's only one person in the Bigfoot World who can bring me out of this funk. Brookreson blows on imaginary conch shell and yells, "Bigfoot News Team....Unite.......!" Someone get me platinum level Cryptozoologist Gerhard Reinke. If I don't hear from him today. I will not survive. M
