A Must Read: Skunk Ape Semester By Mike Robinson

Mike Robinson's novel, Skunk Ape Semester, is an adventurous cross country excursion winding it's way down the path of cryptozoology and the paranormal.
Professor Jeremy Fishleder learns his university is cancelling the cryptozoology course he teaches. This, plus a health scare and personal issues lead him to go on an oft-dreamed of sabbatical, unexpectedly joined by a couple of recently graduated male students--plus one girlfriend--for the trip of a lifetime.
Their journey becomes a veritable smorgasbord of stops investigating the mysteries of our universe, with something to satisfy everyone's appetite for high strangeness and cryptid creatures. Included on the widely diverse buffet are favorites like Bigfoot, the creature of Lake Champlain known as "Champ", those tricky blood-sucking chupacabras and the rarely reported Dover demon of Delaware. Also included is a visit to Kelly, Kentucky to look into the Sutton family's encounter with what is described as alien like goblins in 1955. (Destination America's new television series, Monsters and Mysteries in America features a segment about the frightening UFO and apparent alien creature invasion in the series opener). Jeremy and his young crew cruise down the crypto trail, working toward our main course, the Florida skunk-ape. Sparked by a sighting of the mysterious swamp creature in his childhood, Jeremy plans to join an expedition to look for evidence of the animal. Along the way, the four unlikely travel mates stop for nibbles of the existential, lightly salted with ufology and peppered with the paranormal.
As the group traverses through America's open and occasionally remote country, we learn more and more about what drives each of the characters as well as the colorful personalities involved in the oh-so-guilty-pleasures immersed in society's fringe interest groups. By the time they near their destination, we realize that the quartet have inadvertently journeyed down a path of self-discovery inasmuch as an exploration of uncatalogued animals and extra-terrestrial or supernatural curiosities.
Skunk Ape Semester is a delightful peek through the window of the weird set very much in contemporary culture and technology such as internet blogging, texting and Youtube uploads. Despite it's overall fictionalized story weaving, it is unmistakably intertwined with real people and true events that any cryptid enthusiast will instantly recognize. Pick it up and take a ride in the backseat of this free-spirited road trip down the highways of inexplicably peculiar phenomena and secretly pondered wonders of the natural and supernatural world.
On a final note, some of the book's more gluttonous readers may find themselves just a little bit hungry for a sequel, craving the hypnotic red eyes of Point Pleasant's bizarre harbinger of doom, "Mothman", with a heaping helping of Jersey's winged and menacing devil on the menu. Nevertheless, until then there's plenty to fill your plate in Robinson's feast of the unexplained, Skunk Ape Semester. Bon appetite!
