Jeff Meldrum and Steven Streufert Speaks Out On Ketchum Bigfoot DNA Publication

Dr. Melba Ketchum has published her Bigfoot DNA paper on DeNovo Science Journal, a website, she claims to have bought out recently. Regardless of whether or not you think the science journal is legit, it's published now and we can all check it out for the super low price of $30.

So what are the big shots saying about Ketchum and her published paper? Dr. Jeff Meldrum of Idaho State University and Steven Streufert of Bigfoot Books has chimed in. Here's what they wrote on Facebook today:

Dr. Jeff Meldrum via Project Sasquatch:

The journal was created on a GoDaddy template on Feb 4, by a third party, with a one-year contract. There is no information about who is editing the "journal" or who the members of an editorial board might be. I queried the contact feature on this matter but have received no reply. This does not appear to be a refereed journal. It appears to merely be a front for a self-published report. The sequences have not been uploaded to Genbank.

Steve Streufert via Coalition for Sanity in Bigfoot Research:

I've said this many times before, and I'll say it again:
Ketchum may indeed have real Bigfoot samples, but she clearly screwed up the scientific process in many ways, and seems to have an extremely naive interpretation of what the data mean. This will become clear when real scientists get a hold of that data. Even then, it is possible that this flawed study could lead to the proof of the possible Sasquatch species. Personally, I would love to see that happen.

There may indeed be something behind it, within all the mess. Real, earnest, dedicated researchers put their hearts and souls into this. One can only hope it was not all for nothing.

    2. Its an absolute travesty is what it is. If she had a clue, at all, she could've fabricated DNA primers, mixed sample evidence to seem like a hybridazation event, etc. As it is now she looks exactly like what she is: Another idiotic faker trying to fool the gullible community known as "Bigfootland". Smeja lied for 2.5 years and finally wanted to sleep at night so submitted his bear hide for testing. Other fools like Dyer just keep plugging away until someone buys their book/movie.

Melba is such an idiot not only did she fake the study but couldnt even figure out how to pull off a convincing hoax!!! Her data and science is 100% BS in addition.

I wonder if Sykes study (which will show all known animal/human DNA) will go around Oxford and self publish on a godaddy.com website?? Poor footers, but honestly we TOLD you what would happen for the last three years...it finally did and all her supporters, like her, look like fools.

    9. Ketchum wanted to be the first to provide proof to do it, but tried to decieve everyone that she had the scientific knowledge and background to do it. She doesn't. She produced only a DNA test, but not the science to show the results mean what she says they mean. You need to be a scientist to do that, and she just is not one. We have to wait for Sykes at Oxford -- the real deal.

    11. I told you, Sykes study will find nothing of interest, just 'coons, beaver, bear, possum, coyotes and people who discovered or handled the sample. Thats what Ketchum found and has NOW, and has based her paper on. Tske Smejas bear: IF he actually submitted it to her, it turned out to be bear and human. So mDNA frome either would show up in abundance. She ran sample agsinst common DeNova DNA assay got Justins mtDNA (.the human part) which was designed by forensics to only test for the human part anyway!! A predetermined human marker. Then she ran a DS nDNA assay and found a whole mess of nDNA human mixed with something else, primate or otherwise, but nonhuman codes she didnt recognize because she doesnt know how to ID for specific human genes....she is a 100% idiot ass-clown and Disotell, Barry Scheck (of OJ fame) or Sykes would rip her apart at a public forum.

BIgFOOT is a DEAD PROjECT thanks to "DENoVo publishing!!! Trust me Melba is a laughingstock if anyone of IQ that doesnt believe (like me) bought it and can discuss in a legit medium....Melba is toast.

BiBS is actually part of it, there's no true skeptic here it's all an agenda crowd with one purpose to ridicule this subject. Check BiBS' drivel, who in her right mind would get pleasure out of spending so much time and dedication on a subject of no genuine interest other than the job hired to do here. It used to be on youtube now it's here notice it's always the free for all public places, you can't do this ridiculing on facebook where it's more private. ReplyDelete

    1. I don't think that will happen. To have serious scientific study, the bigfoot community as a whole would have to come together and work together for that goal.

So far, all I see that surfaces to the top are a lot of hoax's and claims that no one verifies before actually reporting on it.

And then, the more outspoken members of the community comment on it so that they can raise their profile.

If a focused effort for mainstream to take this subject seriously, the entire community would have to agree on not perpetuating hoaxes for the sake of publicity and agree on standards when looking into actual claims.

They'd also would need to share data and information, which from what I can see doesn't happen. Everyone signs NDA's and hides information from one another, because everyone is out to be "that one person" to prove it's existence so that they can cash in.

I find it ironic that the same BF community that is doing this for the sake of cashing in, crucifies Melba for doing the same. Double standard.

    1. It's not an epic failure yet. Meldrum is steady and reasonable, but he does not do genomic science. Whether the data gets downloaded into genbank or not, the data will speak for itself. the critique on the data and the "next gen sequencing" is all that matters. There were 11 scientists involved, all with something to lose. That they were willing to risk it, says something about whether they thought they were/are on to something or not. Perhaps there hasn't been time yet to send to genbank. What is the criteria for acceptance into genbank? Does genbank need to pay the $30 ? Would that negate the need to pay the $30? Maybe that's why Ketchum does not want to just give it up to genbank, who would them give it up to anybody for free. Ketchum does need to start publicly elaborating on the whole story from a to z. What is she waiting for?

      Delete
    2. Oh...ok, thanks for clearing that up for me.

      Delete
    3. I didn't clear anything up. I'm just saying critique the data and methods. WE don't know anything about it yet, I am willing to admit I don't know all the facts. SO, I reserve judgement. You should too.

    4. Thats the whole point idiot, there may be real data present and she fucked it up in how she presented it. Dont you get it? She used you idiots

      Delete
    5. How the data is presented is not nearly as important as what the data shows. If it's good science/data/interpretation, the truth is all that matters. That's the whole point, and you're the idiot. How it is presented, and whether Ketchum is ultimately deemed the discoverer of bigfoot is of little consequence. Is there now proof of an unknown hominid or hybrid, or both, or is there not? The "peer" review is really going to be a continuous on-going process, whether it passed the initial process on not, whether it got published in the normal journal publication process or not. We're still going thru the human genome and trying to understand it, and that process is still only in its infancy. The data didn't use me, and neither did Ketchum. It's all about the truth. Everybody is always saying Ketchum's genetic experience and background isn't up to the task. But there were many others involved. It's not just her or about her. She is clearly interested in the mystery, and in finding the truth. She took the risk to her reputation when nobody else would. Do you think Sykes would have taken the ball and run with it if Ketchum hadn't gone first? I don't think so myself. In addition, I think he wants to wait until Ketchum's data is out there before he risks the next step.

    6. I read about a geneticist who has read the paper and states there is no raw data, apparently this is important, also another comment was that the nuDNA did not amplify which is often a sign of contamination, I confess I do not know whether this information is correct but then again I am not a geneticist.

      Delete
    7. Are you kidding me? You must not have any idea how peer-review publications actually work. Does Genbank have to pay the $30?!?!?! We are still in our genomic research infancy? The frack are you talking about?

      Delete

    8. I think comments from those in the field who have read the paper may contribute more to the validity of the project so I will post what I have come across.

First up is Richard Gibbs, one of the key scientists behind the Human Genome Project and director of the Human Genome Sequencing Center at Baylor College of Medicine:

“As a scientist I would consider anything. The currency of scientific advance is keeping your skepticism at bay. You have to approach these things incredibly agnostically. As I read the paper I asked, is the evidence here compelling? I don’t know. Is there clear evidence of fraud? That’s not apparent. It’s an intriguing hypothesis. One would need to view more sequencing information before supporting the conclusions.”

Specifically, Gibbs said, it’s standard protocol to upload the raw sequencing data which can then be analyzed to determine whether this is a new species, or simply an amalgam of existing species. Only a text file, which is unhelpful, accompanies the paper.

Next is the view from Leonid Kruglyak, a Princeton University geneticist:

“To state the obvious, no data or analyses are presented that in any way support the claim that their samples come from a new primate or human-primate hybrid. Instead, analyses either come back as 100% human, or fail in ways that suggest technical artifacts. They make the bizarre claim that the failures might be caused by novel, nonstandard structure of the DNA (“Electron micrographs of the DNA revealed unusual double strand – single strand – double strand transitions which may have contributed to the failure to amplify during PCR.”) which would mean this DNA was different from DNA in all other known species. There’s also the strange statement they couldn’t deposit sequences in GenBank because it’s a new/unknown taxon — GenBank does that no problem.”

“The tree in Fig 16 is inconsistent with known primate phylogeny and generally makes no sense.”

  14. And here's a good one.
"Unfortunately today fame & fortune has been more important to some with scientific credentials than a search for the truth. These people should never be considered scientist, even if their academic credintals are A1. A scientist gets fame from his peers when something he proposes is proven false as well as when he is proven correct. Take for example cancer research. There may be indications that exposure to something causes an increased chance to develope a certain cancer. If that is not the case, knowing such is important because it eleminated that suspect. It is akin to the scientist that eleminates a suspect due to DNA testing."

Damn you Don Jeffrey Muldrum and your eyebrows.

  36. Dr Meldrum just pimp slapped that cat veterinarian in a big way. He called it for what it absolutely is:

That is a "failure" because it wasn't accepted in a real/credible journal refereed by real/credible scientists. Instead it is a self promoted publicity stunt with the goal of one thing in mind; to fill her pockets with as much money from as many schmucks as she can. She's doing the equivalent of: charging morons (the ones who back her and this paper) to eat a shit sandwich.

Why has Melba not commented on this blog? It is the BEST bigfoot blog out there, bar none!

  38. Meldrum: We are the luckiest sons of bitches in the world, you know that?

Dahinden: So this is the ship they say is unsinkable.

Gimlin: It is unsinkable. God himself could not sink this ship.

Strain: Teach me to ride like a man.

Strain: And chew tobacco like a man.

Melba: And spit like a man!

Dahinden: What, they didn't teach you that in finishing school?

Barackman: Where are you going? To him? To be a whore to a gutter rat?

Moneymaker: I'd rather be his whore than your wife.

You bigfootery cultists must be sad pandas.

But please continue to compare rational-minded observers to retards... while you put all your faith in known and exposed frauds and hoaxers and believe in bigfoot monsters.

  42. "Can we even know if Meldrum actually? Has anyone examined his dermal ridges?"

Seriously, how stupid can footers be? I give you all points for loyalty, but this is too much. You guys stood by Smellba Ketchup when she talked about hanging out with "playful families of five" squatches. You footers took it on good faith that Smellba knows people routinely feed them blueberry bagels. Ketchup says the squatches braid horse hair and love building stick forts to frolic in, the bleevers eat it up, unquestioningly.

I thought you were all insane, but then things got really interesting. The stories of mind-rape, Angel DNA, the nephilim connection, the publicist named "Forrestpeople." At this point it just got sad. Footers want to bleeve so badly that they would take anything their Messiah, Smellba Ketchup, says as Gospel. Mind-speak? Disabling prey with infrasound? Zapping footers with electro magnetic energy blansts and escaping capture using mind pulses to scramble brain waves? I mean seriously???

How did the footing community swallow all this nonsense, hook line and sinker? I'm sure that the footers, confused and floundering for answers, will only gobble up Smellba's latest paper, where she promises to reveal the biological source of sasquatch's "psychokinetic energy blasts and telepathy. So you too can learn to move objects just by thinking about them and commune with the gentle, playful forestpeople in all their new age glory! All for the low low price of only 3 payments of 29.99!"

Goddamn, footers. At this point, you are getting only what you deserve.

    2. Is someone mad because no one will tickle his dermal ridges? Anon 8:14, while he needs to work on his spelling and grammar a bit, does bring up a lot of valid points. This paper has been a circus sideshow from the get go. At every turn, there were many in the bigfoot community defending her bizarre statements regarding sasquatch, their behavior, and the potential paranormal element of their existence. I don't know if that is the result of Dr. Ketchum holding some fruity new-age beliefs or what, but it does cast serious aspersions on her scientific credentials.

  44. oh for the days when erik beckjord would have torn melba to ribbons. because as he said, not only is bigfoot weirder than you can imagine, it is weirder than YOU CAN imagine (ie beyond human understanding). He would have torn up this message board like a piece of paper, and rightly so. ONLY WITNESSES SHOULD EVER COMMENT. everyone else might just as well keep thei poop in a coffee mug.

  45. interesting that it changed from "no bigfoot has ever been killed," to just get in a truck and go out and shoot a couple, and it was believed instantly......has anyone wondered why this change in the basis premise of bigfoot?

  47. Who cares about the controversy surrounding the Ketchum DNA and journal publishing?

If anyone has half-a-brain (which doctorate level educated people don't because they are too arrogant about being doctors anyway...) they'll realize that the topic of Sasquatch will always have people that believe and people that don't believe regardless of DNA, actual video, journal publications, photographs, hoaxed video, etc.

And with that said, release the damn HD videos already!

We'll decide fro ourselves, we always do.

    ReplyDelete
  48. To all you non-believers, no video or scientific proof will ever be good enough, ever, no matter what. You will always call bullshit on bigfoot and their existence until you see one for yourself. Once you do it will change your life.

I know, I've heard from all kinds of hunters and outdoor sportsman's that they've been in the woods their entire life and never seen one so it has oi be BS. But I tell them many times I've been within five feet of humans while bow hunting and they never knew I was there. Even after looking directly at me. So if I can remain hidden, I know that something that lives in the wild all the time can remain hidden if it wants to. Like I say, until you see one for yourself, you'll never believe. But once you do.......

    1. Anon Saturday, Feb.16th @ 1:42 PM PST: I have believed in this species since childhood thanks to my dad and then I had my own sighting. What can be done to prove they exist now short of a dead body or a living Sasquatch being captured? My hope is that this species will be allowed to live in peace and hopefully, if proven to exist, they will then be protected from being hunted or trapped by laws in every state where this species exists. Really, what are they? Why is their DNA so unique and so very unusual? Where have all of these crazy stories come from about UFOs and Sasquatch being connected somehow? I saw a creature, not a spaceman, not an alien, but a huge creature covered in hair that dwarfed my 6 foot 3 inch hubby in height and weighted 4 times what my hubby weighs. There is *something* out there, exactly what they are, I don't know, but I do know that they do exist and I will never go camping nor hiking ever again. We puny humans have no defense against them unless we are very well armed should a Sasquatch attack a human. May God Forbid that from ever happening.
