Dr. Melba Ketchum Explains Why She Self Published Her Bigfoot DNA Paper (Update: "I did not self publish")

The mainstream science community has refused to accept Dr. Melba Ketchum's Bigfoot DNA paper. She says some journals won't even look at her paper, and one peer reviewer mocked her. Dr. Ketchum calls it the "Galileo Effect". The Galileo effect is defined as "A belief that persists in a society and thrives almost indefinitely despite the lack of evidence for it". Rather than waiting indefinitely for mainstream science to publish her paper, she has done it herself through the DeNovo Science Journal, where peer reviewers hold an opened-mind:

It has been a long and tedious battle to prove that Sasquatch exists. We have had the proof for nearly 5 years but building enough data to convince mainstream science has taken a lot of time. Trying to publish has taken almost two years. It seems mainstream science just can’t seem to tolerate something controversial, especially from a group of primarily forensic scientists and not “famous academians” aligned with large universities, even though most of our sequencing and analysis was performed at just such facilities.

We encountered the worst scientific bias in the peer review process in recent history. I am calling it the “Galileo Effect”. Several journals wouldn’t even read our manuscript when we sent them a pre-submission inquiry. Another one leaked our peer reviews. We were even mocked by one reviewer in his peer review. We did finally pass peer review with a relatively new journal. It took a fresh outlook on the part of the editors and their careful selection of reviewers with knowledge of next generation whole genome sequencing in order to pass. I have no idea who the reviewers were though I have the reviews. That was kept confidential as is the way journals handle peer reviews. That was only part of the delay and problems associated with publication though. After this journal agreed to publish the manuscript, their legal counsel advised them not to publish a manuscript on such a controversial subject as it would destroy the editors’ reputations (as it has already done to mine). I have documentation on all of this drama. So, rather than spend another five years just trying to find a journal to publish and hoping that decent, open minded reviewers would be chosen, we acquired the rights to this journal and renamed it so we would not lose the passing peer reviews that are expected by the public and the scientific community. Denovo, the new journal is aimed at offering not only more choices and better service to scientists wanting to submit a manuscript, but also reviewers and editors that will be fair, unlike the treatment we have received. We furthermore have adhered to all of the standards set here in the link below, especially since the entire review and agreement to publish was done at the previous journal:

http://publicationethics.org/case/editor-author-own-journal

Here's a short abstract of her Bigfoot DNA paper via:

One hundred eleven samples of blood, tissue, hair, and other types of specimens were studied, characterized and hypothesized to be obtained from elusive hominins in North America commonly referred to as Sasquatch. DNA was extracted and purified from a subset of these samples that survived rigorous screening for wildlife species identification. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequencing, specific genetic loci sequencing, forensic short tandem repeat (STR) testing, whole genome single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) bead array analysis, and next generation whole genome sequencing were conducted on purported Sasquatch DNA samples gathered from various locations in North America. Additionally, histopathologic and electron microscopic examination were performed on a large tissue sample. vel non-human DNA.

[Update] Ketchum claims she is not self publishing: "One thing I want to make ABUNDANTLY clear. I did not self publish, but acquired the other journal. I have had and still have NOTHING to do with any publishing, editing or peer reviewing for Denovo. That was all completed prior to the acquisition of Denovo."

    2. I did not think anybody would publish her paper. It's too extreme of a subject for anybody to take a chance of ruining their reputation on. We are in the PC dark ages in my opinion.

She had to get it out someway. But with that said there is no way to I'm going to pay any money to see a piece of carpet lying on the ground. I have that myself out back.

    3. It is not a scientific paper, it is summary of her DNA test results. You need a PhD in DNA to produce any paper that makes any kind of case that the results point to Bigfoot. I just think what Melba found were DNA anomalies. We have to wait for Sykes to get any science.

    4. "We furthermore have adhered to all of the standards set here in the link below"

Uh, no Melba, you haven't. That link requires that "the process is absolutely transparent" for the publication to remain ethical and that's clearly not the case here. Which journal reviewed the paper? Were there any revision/editorial suggestions in the reviews and were they adhered to?

The situation he describes about why he was able to locate the Bigfoot, Due to it being trapped in a small geographical area, and why he was able to get close enough to shoot it makes since. It would not be so easy in the forest in a wilderness area, but in a metropolitan area surrounded by development and highway Loops the Bigfoot can't really go anywhere without being seen. I hope I am not let down again, but I will wait and see what happens in April.

That isn't required to start her own Journal and print her paper.

It might impress the Sasquatch believers.

So within 15 minutes of me mentioning it here at JREF, her name was removed from the front cover, and no names in contact us etc, it all seems to be gone! Thats a real shame Robin, you ought to be getting credit for all your hard work!

Lucky for you, when you google De Novo, one of the links is for contact us, and for whatever reason, your name appears there on the google link, even thought it has been scrubbed from the De Novo website.

for those of you coming late to this game, a very brief recap of who Robin Haynes, AKA pheifer, AKA Lynn etc etc is!
She is the woman in michigan with 10 bigfoots inhabitting her 10 acre michigan property. She routinely feeds then Blueberry Bagels, and went over to russia for burtsevs dog and pony show, which ended in her publically blasting Meldrum apparently because he was not willing to be hoaxed!

Instead of bashing Melba, take an unbiased journalistic eye, interview her and investigate her claims and interview the journals that she submitted to. See if in fact that these journals stayed away from this controversy.

I for one would love to see what you find and dig up. If she is telling the truth, it is something important for the Bigfoot community to address, because there will be no proving the existence of Bigfoot, if mainstream science doesn't want to acknowledge it even with hard data.

  40. How many people here can't seem to perform a simple google search and domain lookup? Well, I guess bleebers will bleeb anything.

MELBA IS A FRAUD. This is a SCAM. If you buy into it (or send the scammer your $30 or however much), then a) you're an idiot, b) you deserve what you get.

    1. Bigfooters aren't even buying her paper, I sure hope not anyway, asking for money isn't right and I refuse to believe she's doing that since this knowledge belongs to everybody.

  41. This is the problem with the Bigfoot community... She has one hundred and eleven DNA samples that have been tested in every way that a large scale study would have, and yet she is being bashed because of the lack of publishing from an outside source??? Instead of looking at the facts and research that she has done, the "scientific" community would rather bash her for not having a publishing journal...?? WTF??
This is exactly what happened to Galileo and it's a shame to see that our "Scientific" community hasn't grown since his time... Instead of bashing and insulting any little piece of arbitrary information, how about the "Scientists and Skeptics" look at her work and the facts behind all the DNA analysis that has been done over the past 5 years....
She could have a live specimen and it would still be labeled a hoax or scam!!
    Pathetic...
This Dr. did amazing work and has put her reputation on the line, that many other scientists were too cowardly to do, and for that she is the subject of redicule and harassment?

    1. Exactly, which is precisely what this very blog is intended for set up to ridicule the subject and she happens to be the target right now, or anyone really getting too close to the secret the government (in cahoots with mainstream science serving them obediently) doesn't want you to know about. The only fakers here are the joking cynics, they know more than anybody else that she's totally right hence the on-going smear campaign on anything bigfoot or extraterestrial for that matter. They just think you're unworthy to know the truth, keeping silent about the truth ensures both power and control continue.
