Efforts were made to catch the creature in order to identify who he was and from where he hailed, but to no avail. At one point he was surrounded by a group of men and boys, but escaped easily by bounding over a wire fence.

HAVE SEEN A WILD MAN
People Near Auburndale Said to Be in a State of Terror
A dispatch from Marshfield says that at Auburndale the whole country side is living in great fear of a really wild man who makes his abode in the woods and occasionally appears int he open. Several people have reported seeing him at different times and on one occasion a crowd of men and boys tried to surround him and effect his capture, but the fellow leaped a wire fence and made his disappearance in a thick forest. On each occasion that he has been seen he wore nothing but a shirt, and who he is and ow he exists causes much speculation.
Police Officer Louis Thompson and District Attorney R. E. Andrews of Marshfield made a trip to the vicinity where the apparition usually appears, but failed in locating it. It is the opinion of the officers that the nude man is someone who has become deranged, but as no one in that section has been reported missing, it makes the question more complex as to who and where he comes from. Berry pickers and all are giving the wild man's domain a wide berth and authorities are making every effort to have the offensive one soon in their keeping.
