Robert Lindsay: Skeptics Are Probably Wrong About Snelgrove Lake

In 2007, MonsterQuest ran an episode documenting scientists, Curt Nelson (biologist, University of Minnesota) and Jeff Meldrum (anthropologist, Idaho State University) who spent five days with their film crew at a cabin near Ontario's Snelgrove Lake.

One evening, during the filming of the episode, the show's cameramen and producers believed they were "attacked" when rocks and sticks were thrown at their cabin. The crew nearly wet their pants that night.

Dr. Meldrum also collected some possible Bigfoot tissue samples scraped off a wooden board with screws in it. According to the show's producer, test results for the blood, tissue and hair samples came back as neither bear nor human. "The hair did not match any known North American bear or animal and tests showed an uncanny similarity to human DNA with one exception: the irregular DNA matched that of a primate," a reporter for the New York Post wrote.

Many skeptics have argued that the area where the samples were recovered is not as isolated as MonsterQuest led us to believe. They claim villagers frequent the popular fishing destination and it probably explains why the DNA test results came back as "American Indian".

Robert Lindsay discussed this possibility on his blog post last night:

Snelgrove Lake appears very isolated. Skeptics say that there is an Indian village of 900 only 5-10 miles away from the lake where Bigfoot evidence, now the provenance of Dr. Melba Ketchum’s DNA study, may well have been found in an elaborate study that involved Jeff Meldrum, a TV show, and some rinky-dink geneticists.

The end result was supposedly “American Indian,” but all they looked at was MtDNA, and Bigfoot MtDNA is human. The sample came from a creature that stepped on a nailboard that Meldrum and others had set out to catch an intruder that had been smashing up the cabin. Something stepped on the nailboard, leaving blood and hair. How many humans have hairy feet?

The sample is said to have made its way to Ketchum’s study, and it is said to be included in the paper. I don’t know for sure, but I would guess that it’s positive for Bigfoot DNA.

Skeptics say it’s merely an Indian, and the lake is not nearly as isolated as we say it is, pointing to the nearby Indian village. Someone needs to tell Google about this Indian village because it doesn’t show up on any maps. In fact, no towns, and not even any roads, appear to be present for maybe 100 miles around the lake. Snelgrove Lake may well be as isolated as we say it is.

  2. the lake isn't listed on this road map of ontario, but by using google maps and the official road map of Ontario I was able to locate it here http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/traveller/map/images/pdf/northont/sheets/Map16.pdf

it's almost exactly between 2 towns: South Bay and Slate Falls, about 20 miles from each, no indian villages are listed, and no major hwy really , but that doesn't seem to stop people from driving around up there judging by all the dirt roads and trails I can see

    1. Try Google Earth.Slate Falls is actually about 8 miles from Snelgrove Lake and Slate Falls Airport is about 5 miles away from the lake. Both these estimates are as the crow flies.

There is a main roadway about 2 to 2.5 miles from the lake.
If you've ever have ridden on an ATV it wouldn't take much time on to get to the lake from the main road.

If someone busted their butt through the terrain and woods to get to this cabin just to mess this place up rather than steal something would be a tall tale. I'm going with real. There ARE roads nearby, but it's got to be easier to just fly a film crew, equipment...etc than it is to drive there, unload gear onto ATV'S and then go through old trails to the cabin. Locals may do that to get around, but it isn't very practical for a mass of people.

  8. A barefooted, hairy, and drunk Indian to miss the screws in a board sitting right in front of the door.
BS, no human stepped on that board. Those are frequently used to keep bears from breaking down doors. Grizzlies do it often in seasonal vacation cabin communities in Montana. In 1978 and 1979 the Giefer Creek grizz ripped up about a dozen such cabins in the Mission Mt.s of west central Montana. A good friend on the Border Grizzly Project out of U of M in Missoula was tasked with foot snaring, collaring and radio tracking him. My guess it's common elsewhere. Actually in real bad areas they will spike the door also.
My point, no Indian would have stepped on it. They would all be aware of such techniques.

    ReplyDelete
  9. The board was placed by the owner and not Jeff Meldrum during the offseason to protect against bears, and I think it may have been there for two years before being examined by Meldrum and Nelson, and they noted how old the blood and tissue appeared. Prior to this the guys cabin had been ransacked in a way that did not suggest a bear due to the insulation of the fridge not being torn out. There had been a several year history by both owner and numerous guests of bigfoot type activity. Also the outline of blood on the board was 17 inches and much broader than any human foot and definitely not bear.

As for the location, the show said it was (I believe ) 200 miles from the nearest town and could only be accessed by plane. I remember looking at mapquest at the time several years ago and the actual location was very remote indeed, so I think we can rule out any first nation people as the rock throwers.

It was a very good show as was typical of the monster quest series and I wish they would bring it back.

PS. Before Doug Hajicek became the producer of Monster Quest he was involved with another show a few years earlier when they were interviewing Bob Gimlim. The producer requested that they offer Bob one million dollars to tell the real story of how the Patterson film was hoaxed. Bob politely responded that he would indeed like to have the money, but could not do this as the facts were the event as he always tells it.

  13. Here's something to consider (and I'm sure I'm gonna get flamed) BUT, if a human steps on those nasty screws (or a bear) and gets several puncture wounds and bleeds, wouldn't the pattern be spread out a little due to the blood? I mean, when you pull your foot off the board it's gonna bleed like hell, and likely not in a nice footprint pattern (or if it did, the pattern would be significantly expanded.) I don't think it would make a nice footprint shaped blood pattern. would it?

  15. The Monster Quest crew went out there for one reason - to get evidence of Bigfoot. They had 5 days with all their tech and experts, then decided to hide from the 'attack' on their cabin. If they had one chance to get something convincing on film, THAT was it. They should have all rushed out into the woods with cameras and flashlights to find it, it was close by. It would have been captured on film. I'm a believer but I think their lack of evidence there was far too disappointing.

  16. Hello everyone. I am from Ontario Canada and have been up that way several times. There are lots of "logging roads" or service roads all over northern ontario that wind through areas that people haven't been in generations. Even though there's a road listed it might be impossible to travel. Also roads that aren't listed exist as well. The logging roads are very seldom traveled up there by anyone other than really fast logging rigs who drive like fucking.maniacs. it's another reason people don't drive them. I used to drive really slow with the windows down up there listening for engine breaks because that'd the only way you know they are coming and the dirt roads are narrow. So it makes sense there are roads and still it's secluded. If you haven't been to Ontario it's massive and very low population up above central ontario. These things have been sighted here even as far south as 40 minutes north of Toronto. Which is incredible.even Algonquin Park is way south of that area and it's said to have a population of one or another type of creature.

  18. And no if you step on a board like that you would rip your foot off it right away before it bleeds. I stepped on a nail and it made me flinch really quickly and when I observed the bottom of my foot the wound was just starting to bleed because of how quick I stepped back off of it. I assume this creature would have reacted the same way. Alot of stab wounds don't bleed until a few seconds afterwards.

    http://clarksresorts.com/assets/uploads/Maps/Snelgrove%20Lake%20Good17.pdf

and it is identical to the area depicted in Google Maps showing the logging roads and the nearby airfield.
