Matt Moneymaker, a celebrity with thousands of followers, made a huge mistake last night. He tweeted about the Colorado movie shooting massacre, and touched on the sensitive subject of firearms:
"America's powerful Gun Lobby isn't nearly as powerful as the Feel-safe-going-to-the-theater-with-your-kids Lobby. They will learn that soon." - Matt Moneymaker

While men didn't engage in PC/cyber sex 2000 years ago, some did engage with other objects, like sheep for example. It wasn't all pure and Godly; ever look at ancient Chinese art - woman having sex with octopuses was popular. And most ancient sculptures of men had huge endowments - Victorian museums whacked them off and commissioned less 'vulgar' peeners be added instead. There are history books on the subject - pick one up. It's only easier to locate now - just a Google search away. But because it's easier to find, doesn't mean there is more of it as a % of population.

We always look 'outside' for answers and solutions when these are inside us. This killer, like the mass killers before, is mentally ill and because he had no criminal history had no barrier to obtaining firearms. Mental illness does not discriminate - it doesn't care if you are smart like this guy, famous like Sandusky, or rich like Howard Hughes - it can affect anyone.
Events like this are an unfortunate price we pay for the freedoms we allow. What change in gun law could prevent this from happening that won't violate another freedom or privacy? None, which is why *nothing* will change after all the political posturing and finger-pointing that always happens.
The bigger myth is that living a full life is a given. Life is precious and there is no guarantee for tomorrow. All the restrictive laws in the world ensuring 'protection' won't stop an asteroid from wiping all life off this planet. Don't be fearful, but cautious of unusual activity. Take responsibility for your actions and responses. Teach your kids this too.
Freedom is not free. We all die. And very few get to choose how. Those are verifiable facts. Live each day to the fullest because there is no guarantee of tomorrow. Truth.

DeleteI think anyone who wants a gun should require passing a psychological exam to obtain a permit. Usually this entails a standard IQ test as well. Every 2 years a new test is required to retain permit(s). Anyone caught with arms without a permit faces a mandatory jail sentence of 6 months to a year dependant on the amount of arms found in their possession owned.

One of the most disgusting things that comes out of these types of disasters is the zealous politicizing (pro and anti) of gun control laws. In Canada there are strict regulations for owning hand guns. The only way to own a hand gun here is if you belong to a gun club, and that's the only place you can take your gun to.
If I was allowed to carry a side arm, I would in a heartbeat. Even in this small city of 1 million there are all sorts of violent people. I may not have a loaded hand gun by my side but every room in my house has a sword, dagger, spear or mace within arms reach. Whether the government likes it or not, I WILL protect myself if I have to, and with lethal force if necessary.
The U.S. is much different than here. I spent four months in Texas and I swear I was the only one without a gun. I had the best time there and everyone was so cordial and hospitable. Not once did I see a fight or hear an argument.
If some crazy wants to kill people, that person will use the easiest means possible. If guns aren't available, that person will use another method.
I'm on the fence with regards to military style weapons but I understand where people are coming from who wish to own these types of weapons.
Things can, and do go sideways before you know it. I'm not going to get in to a big political rant though.
Harsher penalties for offenses and better screening/qualifying procedures may help curb such violent crimes. If a criminal/crazy wants a gun bad enough, he or she will find one, plain and simple.

DeleteHe's saying purchase of assault rifles should have some requirements.That's how it's done in Canada and England and most of Europe (and lots of other free countries that aren't politically oppressed).
A club membership requirement would keep assault rifle ownership legal, but it would hinder dangerously anti-social people, like Leon, from owning assault rifles. Disturbed people won't want to join a club, and clubs usually will not want to have them.
Anti-social people with assault rifles are not needed for a well-regulated militia. They should not be allowed to own anything more destructive than a low capacity hunting rifle, or shotgun, or pistol. That's enough self-protection for them.
