Listen To Alleged Sasquatch Vocalizations From the "Michigan Recording Project"

Editor’s Note: This is a post by Bigfoot Evidence contributor Vicki W.

Since we are in listening mode, you might be interested in checking out the "Michigan Recording Project". It was an extensive endeavor to attain possible sasquatch vocalizations located on private property. The landowner gave researchers access to his land which was claimed to be an habituation site. There are a great deal of interesting recordings available, but of course there isn't a way to be certain what made them. The researchers are confident what they experienced was not a hoax.

Here is the statement from the Michigan Recording Project website:

Since 2004 a group of people from Michigan, Ontario, and Indiana have been conducting an on-site research project in Michigan in an attempt to document evidence of unclassified wildlife.

An important aspect of our research in this location has been a program of bioacoustic surveying. This program has proven highly successful and has resulted in several hours of medium to high quality audio recordings of anomalous wildlife vocalizations and apparent physical manipulation of the immediate environment.

Prior to now we have limited the sharing of these recordings to a handful of people, however both the landowner and we have wondered who else might be experiencing these types of events, and so with the property owner's blessing and with his interests in mind, we are now releasing some of the audio recordings acquired over the last several years.

Our reasons for deciding to release some of the recordings are two-fold:

First we would like to determine if similar vocals and sounds have been heard and/or recorded. These recordings are different in many respects than “classic” alleged sasquatch vocalization recordings, as well as being of considerably higher quality and because of that, we hope to find other areas where this is occurring.

Secondly, given that the end goal of most research is geared toward one or two common objectives (i.e. individual sightings or bringing in solid proof), we feel that as researchers we do have a degree of responsibility to share what we can -- to compare notes, so to speak.

We need to state very clearly that site location and integrity, as well as the anonymity of the landowner and we have wondered who else might be experiencing these types of events, and so with the property owner's blessing and with his interests in mind, we are now releasing some of the audio recordings acquired over the last several years.

We need to state very clearly that site location and integrity, as well as the anonymity of the landowner and that of his family, must be strictly maintained. The landowner is extremely concerned and guarded about his and his family's privacy, to the point where we all have signed confidentiality/nondisclosure agreements with him. While he more recently has become interested in knowing if anyone else has experienced similar events to these, his desire for privacy, and the integrity of the site, must remain our highest priority.

You'll hear several different types of vocalizations in these recordings, sometimes from multiple individuals, and often including physical interaction with the environment in the form of knocking on, breaking, and at times severe thrashing of brush and trees.

The recordings consist of screams, whoops, grunts, huffs, blowing, jabbering, very low guttural growling sounds, and on occasion extremely quiet "rumbling". Often, all of these sounds are heard in a short time frame. There are also several incidents of what sounds like loud tree breaking and knocking. At times, it seems apparent that this is in direct relation with the vocalizations.

On each event page we include a report of the time surrounding the event, as well as a highlight of the event itself. We also have separate individual sounds highlighted.

The recordings are best listened to through either very good quality speakers, or preferably good stereo headphones with the volume turned well up, and bass at least half way. You'll hear the loud vocalizations either way, but the difference between speakers and headphones is significant; you'll hear much more detail with the headphones. You need the volume and bass up to hear the lower, less obvious vocalizations.

The overview page goes on to describe efforts taken to have the sounds analyzed by wildlife biologists and experts in bioacoustics. The analysis were unable to find a match on many of the recordings, but two major acoustic labs could not rule out humans as the source behind the vocalizations that were analyzed.

They provide several facts supporting their beliefs that the recordings are genuine to the best of their knowledge:

There is an extensive history of reports at this location and in the area, many of which have been confirmed in one way or another. This history includes both multiple generations of the host family as well as several independent non-related events. Event descriptions stay true over years of interviews.

The geography, timing and apparent source location of many of the recordings renders the possibility of a hoax from the outside extremely unlikely.

Several of the events have included multiple vocal sources, both in close proximity and at fairly long distances, and while several of the "voices" have become familiar, there are often new or different vocalizations or voices involved also. This would seem to require a large network of both established and new hoaxers playing out predetermined roles, often on little or no notice, over a period of many years, and would certainly increase the likelihood, over time, of their being caught.

We've effectively and to our satisfaction ruled out all family members as potential sound sources; they have many times been present during the events or otherwise accounted for. They’ve all seen us jump and run toward sounds and dark shadows, and thus they are aware of our potential to catch a hoaxer.

The family knows that we deploy a number of game-cameras and change camera locations frequently without their knowledge. This has never been a concern with them.

We have been given free reign with regard to research methods and utilization of the property. No research constraints of any type have been placed on us. We are welcome at any time with no advance notice, and have been encouraged by the landowner to make every effort to discover and disclose any evidence of a hoax. To date we have discovered no evidence of hoaxing in any form.

There have also been fairly clear tracks and trackways found.

Two of our members have had sightings through night vision of something very tall, dark, and massive in close association with vocal displays. Two other team members had a nighttime sighting, close to the campfire light, without night vision in the summer of 2008. One team member had a daytime sighting in the summer of 2005, and another team member had a recent nighttime sighting in the highbeams of his vehicle in July of 2009.

  1. Thanks for this post! I'm from Michigan and can't believe i've never heard this before. Would love to know the general location of this, or at least which peninsula.

  2. These recordings are from the Flowers team (Jim &Stacee) and patrica barker (a very nasty and bitter woman). Although these recordings are intriguing and may be legit and the team deserves some credit for their work if so, the shame is that this group of people were extremely combative, condesending & arrogant towards so many others.

When questioned about their effort, which youd think they would be happy to answer, their attitude was one of "how dare you question us and hold us to the same questioning standard as these other pee ons." from there, they literally took their ball and went home.
Another issue that was just sickening hyprocritcal was the tbrc nailing down the location with the map provided by barkers own artwork and description. The group, who had no problem investigating and bashing other researchers work and investigations claimed the tbrc "outed" or actually lied and said "they attempted" to outtheir location and how dare they!! Yes thats right, once the clues they provided themselves outed the location, then they tried to lie to cover it up, but, they are still credible??? Give us a break

Conclusion: recordings are intriguing and well documented, folks involved are really nasty hypocrites who believe they are of a higher ethical makeup then oher bfooters.... Yeah right! This type of arrogance and gutless retreat from the tough questions from researchers and skeptics puts the whole thing in question

  3. If you know where this location is, why not shed some light on this? It would be interesting to know where it is and if the location could sustain a Bigfoot family.

If there is a Bigfoot family out there, why are they spread so far away from one another? Are they trying to find one another again? I find it interesting if we can get closer to the sounds and mimicking their calls, it maybe that they will eventually get caught out and find us with a camera at the ready.

But I'm sure the researchers have done this, and people have done this for many many years with no luck.

Anyone out there have any idea what other animal could make these noises?

    1. If the property owners don't want the site known, why press and try to find it? I'm curious too since I live in Michigan and simply wonder how close it is to me, but if they want it kept secret, I respect that.

  4. Very cool recordings!!! Creepy as hell, but cool.

  5. The location is near the clam river Mi as Ive been there previously with these people. The owner of the property owns a gorilla costume and used to run a haunted house exhibit on the property and the incompetent researchers were all easily taken in and hoaxed. Please see JREF threads on MI recording threads as we've proved this is all a hoax

    2. Those were not unusual sounds...everyone one of them sounded human...I have heard reported recordings of BF that sound much more impressive than these. I could make these sounds....

  6. Drew this sounds odd, and unlike some of the other recordings I've heard. The one thing that strikes me is the crickets, many say that "everything goes silent" when these creatures are around.

  8. In case you didn't realize, there are more recordings than are listed on that one page. Those are from July 2nd, but if you click on "recordings portals", there are sounds from different nights. One of the pages has recordings that happen in conjunction with a fireworks display.
Sorry there seems to be a couple of paragraphs repeated in the quoted material, either it's a technical error from when it was posted, or I copy/pasted something twice and did not notice it.
As for whether the researchers were hoaxed, I don't know. Anything is possible in the BF world.

  9. Oh wow, the MI prject back from the dead. Are the recordings of the locals shouting out "Yee Haaa" still out there too.

This is all crap from discredited hoaxers.

  10. Just listened to this and sorry, they all sound fake to me:

They sound like some guy randomly screaming. No depth or power to the vocalisations whatsoever..

  11. These people may be a "unpleasant" bunch of folks to socialize with, but they are not hoaxers.Hovey and her ABS cronies tried to discredit them because of personal bad blood. There is a haunted forrest complete with a Bigfoot suit on the rural property. What Hovey and the ABS does not mention, is that they frequent a research area that meets the same criteria. Pot meet Kettle.

    1. The trend of "crap" in footery right is centered upon the ABS , the MABRC and the silly notion they bring that this is some of competition. Lardass Lee was hoaxed for years and wants you to see him as an expert, what a pudgey joke.

  13. This sounds exactly like the vocalizations I heard in the summer of 1973. I was in Northern California, doing some field biology experiments. I was at least 10 miles from any towns or houses. As I walked along a watershed gully, I started hearing faint howling and screaming. The further I walked, the louder it got. Before I knew it, I was right on top of what was making the sounds. As I emerged from the brush into a clearing, I began to make out the shapes of human forms on the ground, writhing around. The wailing and screaming was deafening at this point.
When I was finally able to clearly focus on the body forms on the ground, I realized that they were people. Not just any people either. They were dirty, nasty, disgusting, god damned hippies and they were having an orgy. The stench was unbelievable. As I assessed my situation, I came to the realization that I had to get out of there, and quick. I slowly backed up and when I reached the brushline, I turned and ran like never before. As I was running, I noticed one of them running along side of me, just inside the treeline. Even though I was running as fast as I possibly could (I'm a marathon runner), this thing was keeping pace with me. The whole time it ran along side of me it kept extending it's hand towards me and there seemed to be something in it. At the same it was making vocalizations in my direction, some sort of unintelligible chatter. To my ears, it sounded like he was saying: Dude, here, hit this, it's the bomb. I'm not certain that's what he was saying, it just sounded like that to me. When I finally reached the lot where my car was, it stopped following me. I drove out of there as fast as I could and have been scared to death of the forest ever since.

  14. Drew accepted all the accolades on JREF for busting the Michigan Hoax but that's not true. He also joined forces with his mentor Melissa so she deserves at least half the credit. Nevertheless, those two make a great team. Great work guys !
