Why We Don't Censor Comments
We have had a bit of drama in our comments sections in the last month or so, and I thought this might be a good time to write a quick post about our censorship policy – what it is, why we have it. We thought you deserved to understand our rationale behind it all, even though we know that some of the regular contributors here disagree with how we do things.
We started this blog largely out of frustration because, although there were a few Bigfoot sites and blogs, most are heavily moderated with owners of the site selectively deleting or censoring comments they don't agree with (There are a few exceptions of course). What was lacking was a gathering place where people could come and feel a sense of community, and where they could connect with others who have different opinions.
Among the frustrations we have with some sites and blogs is the suppression of dialog and the flow of information, and when we established Bigfoot Evidence blog, one thing we wanted to insure is each person’s ability to express their point of view, regardless of whether we agree with them or not. We have a high tolerance for dissenting opinions, even if they come across as vitriolic or crazy.
Let me make clear the point that speech within the confines of this blog is not a first amendment issue, but the idea behind it is what has framed our policy toward how we will edit, or should I say "not edit", our comments section. Ideas can be a powerful thing, and a bad idea can be just as powerful and influential as a good one. More often than not, lunacy shines a light on itself.
We have a non-censorship policy for a reason, and we know that it often comes at the cost of offending people, including myself. We know there are other drawbacks, as well. I know that some people here have been offended by some of the comments made by a particular commenter, and for the most part I can understand why.
When Melissa accused us of censoring comments this morning, we could not sit on our hands and let this one pass. While this blog is not about us or Melissa Hovey, we want to make clear to Melissa Hovey that WE DO NOT CENSOR. Most of the comments that don't get posted are stuck in the spam filter for whatever reason by the Blogger platform. We're not in control of this mechanism. Each day, there are at least 10 messages that we have to manually go into and "unspam". If your comments don't show up right away, please do not accuse us of censorship. This site does not do that.

ReplyDeleteTry not to take this stuff personally. A lot of people will say a lot of untrue things without actually bothering to follow up or research the complaint. Obviously, this is a case of someone "spamming" your site with the same comment over and over again. This action would cause Google to recognize their account as a possible spammer. I suspect there is a good likelihood this person could have exhibited this behavior elsewhere and came to your site as a suspected spammer/troll and Google treated their comment accordingly.

DeleteI commend Shawn for not censoring comments...I just wish I could do the same, but when you cover a variety of paranormal subjects you tend to get a huge numbers of idiots and I simply don't have the time to weed out the jerks.

Excellent post Shawn. Some people do not possess the cognitive capability to understand there is a DELAY when dealing with internet postings. ReplyDeleteThis is horse shit. Shawn removed a post regarding Dr. John Bagelmaker when someone was making fun of John Bindernagel's most powerful quote of the day. In addition all comments critical of Robert Lindsey and Tim Fasano are often removed as a result of the financial agreement they have with Shawn. Both pay Shawn a hefty sum for more coverage here- the only reason all negative comments are not removed is because it would be clear this site was schilling them and that defeats the point. Even these comments are staged with Autumn forrest criticizing these posters per the agreement with Shawn.

Look nobody faults Shawn for making money but attacking Melissa Hovey is just wrong. Its one thing to get paid by the Fasano's, Lindsey's and Ketchums but its another to attack Melissa Hovey in hopes that harming her credibility will increase their credibility.

DeleteI'm sure that Shawn has not received a single payment from Fasano, Lindsey, Ketchum, or anybody else. If so, then why have they all been mad at him at some point for something he has said about them?
I'm sure that paying off people is what happens with some Bigfoot people out there, but that isn't what is happening here. Yes, he makes money from ads on his site but that is from Google, not an individual party.
I get the idea that Fasano can hardly afford much beyond an occasional mma t-shirt, so I doubt he is paying anything to anyone. Not that a mma t-shirt is a good decision...

But here in Washington alone, 40% believe in the existence of bigfoot and they are even protected by law in Skamania County.
Shawn's guest posts should be enough to show his open mindedness to everybody, lol. No offense Damian Bravo, but some of yours are kind of out there. I get the feeling that this blog, unlike other blogs, will let people who can write coherently have their moment in the spotlight as an actual guest post.
ReplyDeleteFor what its worth, I have seen some pretty incredible comments onn here from time to time that I would have nuked just for the sake of protecting the insane from further damage, I have only posted a few times when I was doing interviews with the Finding Bigfoot staff. Usually look on here daily, Always entertaining, Usually thought provoking and at times absurd, Still its best site like this for obvious reasons. Just my .02 I think Shawn is doing a great job, Like some one else said, Its a free country so start your own blog site and rake it in.... Even the not-so-clever trolls can be revealing/entertaining. I once wrote Shawn, when the site was new, and asked why a comment I posted didn't show up. He responded that the spam filter caught it (now I know what he meant by that!) and he posted it immediately. Why did I bother for a stupid comment? I have been censored on other sites and I wondered too.
DeleteHis story hasn't changed, nor the site. The posters seem to come and go with the things that cause them angst and it is not too difficult to not read many! Some of the routine and thoughtful posters, and there are many,I do greatly enjoy and look forward to reading. So Thanks Shawn for this "free forum!"

The only posts I've ever witnessed Shawn removing were those that were loaded with foul language and that were sexually suggestive. Other than that,people have been free to post as they like.

DeleteI know people say having a dog along is a bad idea, but I got myself a dog because I need an extra set of eyes, ears, and especially smell.
It's mostly because of the predators in the areas I search in. Now that spring is here, the bears will be out.
I've been itching to get out to the woods again and having new areas to look in gives me extra motivation.
I also want to make a system that connects my still camera to the video camera. This way I can record and take photos at the same time using my 35mm camera.

Naw I don't bombard, if I have a problem with a post I send one email copying the post in the email with my complaint and why I think it's offensive for example "too much profanity" "please consider deleting thanks".

Matter of fact lol once Shawn sent me an email back saying he couldn't do that on what ever I complained about. He did it very nicely but it was a definite "No".
Let me clarify, I don't think one email request from one person would do it but I think probably if 5 or 6 people had a problem and did the same it would carry some weight.

I don't think it would be a good idea unless someone's threatening someone else bodily harm or making death or terroristic threats. Why out someone just because you think they're making trollish comments or you don't agree with their opinion ? It's also probably illegal to do if a site offers anonymous posting and at the very least you would lose the trust of the people posting here.
ReplyDeleteI think it's important for everyone to know that legally anyone can bring legal action against a poster that they feel is slandering them here. Not the blog owner but a poster. A court order can be used to recover ip addresses. It's been done in other blog situations.

It's ok. Naw it was an individual poster who was telling about an app or a program he'd bought that could determine ip addresses of posters on blogs. Then one particular article triggered lot of discord and really rude comments and he warned he was going to call them out then eventually he did. Did not hear anything else from that poster that night. I was amazed that could be done but I guess no one can ever remain truly anonymous on the web anymore?

If you refer to comments above by MH in the picture above you will see she is referring to posts that don't agree with the topic, or as she implicates- Shawn's opinion. All you have to do is read here and go back in the history to see that's not true.
As far as deleting posts due to sick sexual innuendo,racist comments and racist title's of commentators,and profanity there has to be some standards.
I suspect Shawn gets tons of emails daily and he's also working on the next article etc. He does not have time to read every comment but when he receives about 20 emails about the same post there has to be a problem.
Maybe some of the others who have complained via email about posts will come forward if not so be it.
Maybe your time would be better spent checking out the law congress is about to pass on the Internet.

I know Blondie, when I post up, and use some edgy language, it is always a responce to something nasty. I don't feel the need to attack, but rather to defend when stuff gets stupid or discusting. I did not just come out of know-where and use foul language. My posts just usualley match the "flavor" of the post, to fight "fire with fire"
