Walking Gorilla At Port Lympne Wild Animal Park Is A YouTube Hit [Video]

A silverback gorilla who walks upright like a human has become a big attraction at a wild animal park in Kent. In the past 3 weeks, it has accumulated over 3.2 million views on YouTube.

The male, called Ambam, has become something of a celebrity at Port Lympne near Hythe, where he amuses keepers and visitors.

Phil Ridges, Ambam's keeper, said it was "not a novelty" for park staff as gorillas were sometimes known to walk in this way.

  1. Aawww I love watching this. Imagine what he could do with a bit longer legs.

That belly reminds me of a few humans I know.

  2. Really, reeealy bad fake. Clearly photoshopped, and badly done at that. Ive been working with image manipulation for over two decades. Also, this zoo has hoaxed before in the past, which tosses out the credibility.

  3. Bah.. I see the zipper! It's a Moris Suit! Some fella name of Bob says it was him.. that an my cousin says so too! You can clearly see the hip waders, football helm underneath, shoulder pads, keys in his front pocket, and um.. yeah.. it's a hoax!

  4. Not fake, BTW. The missing ingredient for sustained bipedalism (that's missing in all the great apes) is that wonderful, ridiculously-rotund posterior of ours... 'Bubble-butt' seems to be an human exclusive. However, that (along with our hips) certainly seems handy for keeping upright while moving, without becoming exhausted. I imagine that this gorilla can't do a short hike bipedally without the center of gravity pulling him back onto his knuckles quite often. Nonetheless, I can't help but be amazed at these videos and think about how our ancestors made the transition. Cool stuff!
PS- We all know Patty was packin' "back" ;)

    1. Yes, but I've also heard of this famous gorilla... He's no Koko, but that's a really neat trick!

  5. Aw, he's cute. There was a chimp at one time that people thought was part human. His name was Oliver. He was very unusual for a chimp. He walked like a human, had a pale freckled face, and just didn't seem like the others. Aberrations occur. Sometimes, a simple injury can make a creature move differently and then continue to use that even after the injury is healed.

  6. Oh for Pete's sake. You can post a video of Anonymous walking across the yard and he'd call it fake. This is a real video of a real gorilla walking. Read about this last year (timely!): http://content.usatoday.com/communities/sciencefair/post/2011/01/gorilla-walks-like-man-/1

Posting a video/pic/story on the web is completely pointless - everything is a fake. Of course for some folk here, I imagine if they caught a bigfoot and took it door-to-door it and into Anonymous' living room it would "still" be declared fake! Next time you take a boat to Hawaii, watch that edge - it's a huge drop! Jets are fake too: if man were meant to fly, he would have wings. :P

    2. Two Davids... in the state of WA??? I call shenanigans! Clearly one of us is NOT real.

Seriously, skepticism is good because there are a LOT of mis-identifications, wishful thinking, and downright tomfoolery. But there is no excuse for stupidity... there are these tools called search engines - have doubts, look it up! Critical thinking is almost as extinct as the Wooly Mammoth. Oh look, a wooly mammoth in Russia! grrrr....

  7. that is not fake, he does this a lot. it was all over the news here last year. i havent been to port lymphe for a few years mostly going to there sister site of howlets which is closer to me, but i might just go this year to see our ambam. howlets and port lympne (john aspinal foundation) have bred more gorillas in captivity than any other zoo or wildlife park , they are now taking some back to africa to rerelease.

  8. In these digital times people have become even more gullible than ever before, they now think a gorilla walking briefly on two legs is fake. Funny how something people say is a computer fake looks much like Patty did 40 odd years ago, in pre-CGI times. Real bodies both of them, folks.

  10. I'm going to say that all of the "fake" comments are tongue-in-cheek sarcasm.

However, that gorilla was seen smoking a cigar and swearing on an iphone video posted five minutes ago.
