Buffalo Bill's Story About Bones Possibly From A Bigfoot

William F. Cody a.k.a "Buffalo Bill" lived an interesting life as a scout, Indian fighter and buffalo hunter. However, his main contribution for posterity was the popularization of the Western. His cowboy shows did much to glamorize the Old West and inspired the moving picture shows of the next generation, some of which he starred in.

As a free-roaming American frontiersman man and an army scout, Cody also served as a guide to several expeditions, one of which led him to the discovery of a "human" thigh bone which the Indians claimed to be from "those of a person belonging to a race of people who a long time ago lived in this country; that there was once a race of men on the earth whose size was about three times that of an ordinary man."

Yahoo! contributor, David Claerr, pointed out this old story in his article entitled "Were Bigfoot Bones Discovered by Buffalo Bill?":

Buffalo Bill, during his long, adventurous life, also served as a guide to several hunting excursions and scientific expeditions. One of his experiences occurred while he was still an army scout on assignment the state of Nebraska. The story later spread as far back east as Connecticut, and led to fossil hunting forays by Professor Marsh of Yale College in 1871.

There are several interesting points in Buffalo Bill's account, quoted below.

"While we were in the sand hills, scouting the Niobrara country, the Pawnee Indians brought into camp some very large bones, one of which the surgeon of the expedition pronounced to be the thigh-bone of a human being. The Indians claimed that the bones they had found were those of a person belonging to a race of people who a long time ago lived in this country; that there was once a race of men on the earth whose size was about three times that of an ordinary man, and they were so swift and powerful that they could run along-side of a buffalo, and, taking the animal in one arm, could tear off a leg and eat the meat as they walked." *

In summary, we have an eyewitness account by a historical person of a large, human-like thigh bone identified by a medical professional, together with a local legend that describes large, swift and strong humanoid beings, that hunt and capture large game without the use of weapons. Like pieces of a puzzle fit together, the account seems to describe a phenomenon with a strong resemblance to the reported descriptions and activities of Bigfoot or Sasquatch.

  1. I believe everything Buffalo Bill said. It's not like he was a showman or anything.

    5. Bigfooters are obsessive often :) and this entry by some poster (some obscure Utah travel forum!) summarizes some well known, and well ignored, reports...cut and paste follows.. (i didn't fact check the sources..I am trusting the poster...LOL.).

not many comments on this story so we'll see how many column inches this turns into! Sorry Shawn..you can delete no worries...

"In his book, The Natural and Aboriginal History of Tennessee, author John Haywood describes "very large" bones in stone graves found in Williamson County, Tennessee, in 1821. In White County, Tennessee, an "ancient fortification" contained skeletons of gigantic stature averaging at least 7 feet in length.

Giant skeletons were found in the mid-1800s near Rutland and Rodman, New York. J.N. DeHart, M.D. found vertebrae "larger than those of the present type" in Wisconsin mounds in 1876. W.H.R. Lykins uncovered skull bones "of great size and thickness" in mounds of Kansas City area in 1877.

George W. Hill, M.D., dug out a skeleton "of unusual size" in a mound of Ashland County, Ohio. In 1879, a nine-foot, eight-inch skeleton was excavated from a mound near Brewersville, Indiana (Indianapolis News, Nov 10, 1975).

A six foot, six inch skeleton was found in a Utah mound. This was at least a foot taller than the average Indian height in the area, and these natives- what few there were of them -were not mound builders.

"A skeleton which is reported to have been of enormous dimensions" was found in a clay coffin, with a sandstone slab containing hieroglyphics, during mound explorations by a Dr Everhart near Zanesville, Ohio. (American Antiquarian, v3, 1880, pg61).

Ten skeletons "of both sexes and of gigantic size" were taken from a mound at Warren, Minnesota, 1883. (St. Paul Pioneer Press, May 23, 1883) A skeleton 7 feet 6 inches long was found in a massive stone structure that was likened to a temple chamber within a mound in Kanawha County, West Virginia, in 1884. (American Antiquarian, v6, 1884 133f. Cyrus Thomas, Report on Mound Explorations of the Bureau of Ethnology, 12th Annual Report, Smithsonian Bureau of Ethnology, 1890-91).

A large mound near Gasterville, Pennsylvania, contained a vault in which was found a skeleton measuring 7 feet 2 inches. Inscriptions were carved on the vault. (American Antiquarian, v7, 1885, 52f).

In 1885, miners discovered the mummified remains of woman measuring 6 feet 8 inches tall holding an infant. The mummies were found in a cave behind a wall of rock in the Yosemite Valley.

In Minnesota, 1888, were discovered remains of seven skeletons 7 to 8 feet tall. (St. Paul Pioneer Press, June 29, 188 .

A mound near Toledo, Ohio, held 20 skeletons, seated and facing east with jaws and teeth "twice as large as those of present day people," and besides each was a large bowl with "curiously wrought hieroglyphic figures." (Chicago Record, Oct. 24, 1895; cited by Ron G. Dobbins, NEARA Journal, v13, fall 197 .

The skeleton of a huge man was uncovered at the Beckley farm, Lake Koronis, Minnesota; while at Moose Island and Pine City, bones of other giants came to light. (St. Paul Globe, Aug. 12, 1896).

In 1911, several red-haired mummies ranging from 6 and a half feet to 8 feet tall were discovered in a cave in Lovelock, Nevada. In February and June of 1931, large skeletons were found in the Humboldt lake bed near Lovelock, Nevada. The first of these two skeletons found measured 8 1/2 feet tall and appeared to have been wrapped in a gum-covered fabric similar to the Egyptian manner. The second skeleton was almost 10 feet long. (Review - Miner, June 19, 1931).

A 7 foot 7 inch skeleton was reported to have been found on the Friedman ranch, near Lovelock, Nevada, in 1939.(Review - Miner, Sept. 29, 1939)."

There were many more, but these were the only one citing a secondary source.

Most of these are fairly well know and fairly well ignored still today.

    6. Great information. I have personally been to the "Mound" located in Kanawha County WV. The mound is located in South Charleston and they have a small park built around it. They remains of many of he skeletons remain inside the mound because of Native American law/customs, etc.

I was aware of a few of these cases but
you did a great job putting this info together.

  3. According to what is said about Bigfoot's proportions, it's femur would be about the length of a man's. Might be a little bigger around by all this talk of giant thighbones is bologna.

  4. I once had a philosophy teacher tell me that 1000 years ago someone my size would have been in books. 200 years ago I would be a tale. Today I'm average and I'm 6 ft 4 so I think when people talk about giants you have to remember how peoples sizes are so different now.

    1. Agreed, (to a certain point) I would not consider you average by todays standards, probably slightly above average. Also, how do you explain entire tombs of skeletons in excess of 7ft. tall? I realize that every race has an anomoly, but not that many at once.

The bible speaks about a race of giant people. Goliath was described as being in excess of 9ft. Who knows?

  6. Shawn these historical pieces are great. Often lost because as just small references and the very many modern stories sometimes overwhelm them.

I also think the language used in old stories is telling, often referring to what seems to fit a BF description as a wild boy or man or woman.

Has anyone done a study of our changing view of BF's through our changing cultural lens?

I read also on some BF website that Leif Ericson made note in his journals of a large hairy people in Newfoundland that retreated and he could never approach? Lost the reference if anyone can link.

    1. I also didn't bookmark the blog/site I read a reference to the oral tradition of certain tribes near the Ohio Valley, that in the far past the Red and Black Forest Giants lived among them, but war arose between the Reds and Blacks, resulting in complete disruption of the peoples alliances.
Eventually, the Black hairy Giants were defeated, but the Reds (and remaining Blacks) never successfully rejoined the tribes because of the fray. Europeans arrived some time later and the Giants retreated even more? I would love to find that article and chase down the references to verify as it stands out as arather unique legend Shawn?!

  10. This story has been around for a long time. The Bible tells us prior to the flood giants lived in the world creating all kinds of chaos. Read Enoch's book of giants. These beings were created by angels(fallen) mating with women and were very violent in nature. These large skeletons have been and are still being found from time to time. Once they are brougt to the scientific community they are wisked away. The evolutionist dont want any evidence that supports the truth of the Bible. We see in the Bible how God cursed Cain for killing his brother Able. God put a mark on him and sentanced him to be a vagabond on the earth. We dont know what the mark is but could it be a mutated gene? I believe so. In an acient scroll found in the caves of Qumarn supposedly written by Adam we read the account of Lamech killing Cain. The writing state Cain was in appearance like an animal. Hmmm could bigfoot be the clan of Cain? The Bible tells us when the Hebrews came into the promised land tere were giants in the land and they were frightened. Mt Sier in Israel means shaggy and on Mt Carmel caves were found with the remains of inhabitants who had large thick skulls like the so called neandrathal but painted images on the walls. Evolutionists state Neandrathals did not have this capabillity. In the Bible we see the twin brother of Jacob, Esau, who was covered in red hair and smelled like the outdoors. We see the account of Goliath and his sons and accounts of the Anikim. God's word tells us of a world of evil and corruption created by Satan and his fallen angels in which God was forced to use the flood to destroy this evil race. Buffalo Bill's story has not been presented here in completeness. The indians go on to tell that tese giants were destroyed by the great spirit who cased a great flood. Dont fall prey to the lies of the eviloutionist. Check it out for yourselves. Bigfoots are humans cursed to wander the earth. Youll see when it comes out.

  12. I did some math a while ago. I took some average numbers for humans, guessed at the shortest normal height of a BF, and figured out what that would mean.

    Shortest normal
    Human- 5' BF- ~6.5'

    Tallest normal
    Human- 7' BF- 9.1'

    Average
    Human- 6' BF- 7.8'

    Tallest ever
    Human- ~9' BF- 11.7'

    Shortest ever
    Human- ~2' BF- 2.6'

*Note- I took the proportion between the average and the number to figure it out. I just guessed that the shortest height a BF could be without being abnormal is 6'6, and went from there.
