What is the biggest controversy in Bigfoot research?

In a book by Lisa A. Shiel, titled "Creature of Controversy (Forbidden Bigfoot, Part One)", Shiel tries to expose the feuds in the secret world of Bigfoot research. During one interview with well-known Bigfoot researchers, like Eric Altman, Melissa Hovey, Regan Lee, Thom Powell, Nick Redfern, and Kathy Strain, Shiel asked the following question:

"What is the biggest controversy in Bigfoot research?"

Nick Redfern had an interesting answer:

"In my personal opinion, without any doubt, it's why we haven't been able to catch Bigfoot or find a body or any hard evidence—which flies in the face, in my view, of any other animal that doesn't fall in the realm of cryptozoology. When it comes to bears, lions, and tigers, we may find them dead occasionally in the wild or we might find a bear occasionally hit by a truck, but the important thing is that even though it's just occasionally, it does happen. I think this is the biggest controversy with Bigfoot research. Bigfoot, even when it reportedly gets shot, never crumples to the ground and dies. If it unfortunately gets hit by a car, it always manages to escape. Photographic evidence is interesting but never conclusive. Hair samples are interesting but never conclusive. It's this overwhelming, almost eerie elusiveness with Bigfoot that to me is the most controversial aspect. The reason it's the most controversial aspect is because, by default, being so elusive to me implies there's something more—or paradoxically less—to Bigfoot than just being an unclassified animal that science hasn't found or doesn't recognize."

Is Bigfoot real or a hoax?

For most people, this is the most controversial question surrounding Bigfoot. But to the folks who study Bigfoot—interviewing witnesses, collecting evidence, and analyzing the data—there's no question about Bigfoot's reality. Yet behind the closed doors of Bigfoot research, arguments boil over into feuds worthy of the Wild West.

Now, Lisa A. Shiel invites you to step through the door and learn about the controversies that both enliven and hinder the quest for this mysterious creature:

• What should we call Bigfoot?
• Is Bigfoot paranormal, flesh and blood, or both?
• What on earth is Bigfoot?
• Should we shoot a Bigfoot in order to prove they exist?
• How much do we really know about Bigfoot?
• And much more!

Creature of Controversy exposes the feuds in a no-holds-barred look at the secret world of Bigfoot research, enhanced by interviews with other well-known Bigfoot researchers:

• Eric Altman
• Melissa Hovey
• Regan Lee
• Thom Powell
• Nick Redfern
• Kathy Strain

Will the Bigfoot mystery ever be solved, or will infighting block the search? Buy Creature of Controversy today to find out!

  1. The biggest controversy in my mind is: why isn't Autumnforest my bride? Her avatar brings joy to my research-weary eyes.

I am educated, well-mannered, handsome in passing, and my style of walk suggests I am a man full of justified confidence.

If those qualities are not convincing enough, I have several legitimate degrees, I'm (in)famous in the funny car racing circuit, and I'm also one of the most respected Bigfoot researchers in the Garden State, more commonly referred to as New York.

  2. Lol dude your posts make me laugh man keep it up.

To counter the points about Bigfoot not being found dead after being hit by a car or after being shot there is a lot of great reasoning for that.
For Bigfoot to be hit by a car you have to assume he is not a very intelligent animal. How many Grizzly get hit every year? Not that many and we know roughly how many there are in North America. It's a numbers game.

Secondly a Bigfoot getting shot and not dying is pretty easy to understand. How many times has one been shot it a vital area? What faking rifle was being used? Unless your hunting Grizzly or Moose your not carrying anything above a .30 6 and that rifle will piss a Griz off and a Moose will get hurt but run and you won't find it for awhile.

  4. So Shiel interviewed top names for her book ... I couldn't help but notice that list did NOT include "the world's most respected authority on the phenomenon known as Bigfoot", the man who "put the big back into bigfoot", our host and renowned Bigfoot Researcher, Mr. T--.... well, you know.

  8. @anonymous: Educated gentlemen know that New Jersey never received authentic statehood and is truly just a suburb of New York, but I will refer to it as a state for this lesson.

We New Yorkers love the sound of "The Garden State", so we have commandeered it as our own. We already have the Empire State building, so using the "Empire State" is redundant.

The "state" of New Jersey now needs a new nickname: The Sewage State, Mountain of Garbage State or the Gastineau State, the choice is yours.

  9. In my opinion, the best way to prove that bigfoot exists is to capture one. If it exists, there must be a way to capture it. No animal is entirely elusive to a trap of some sort.

The problem with capturing a bigfoot is that squatches are likely too intelligent to be lured near anything that clearly looks manmade. That famous old (no longer active) bigfoot trap in Oregon is an example of the kind of trap that will not catch a bigfoot.

In my opinion, a bigfoot capture must involve a method that is entirely 100% imperceptible to the sasquatch as a trap. As a squatch likely has a very good sense of smell, even the components of a trap set by humans must be covered with some type of non-human scent in order to mask the human odor that will detract a sasquatch.

My idea for a trap is relatively simple but time consuming to construct. In an area with frequent bigfoot sightings, say Pierce county Washington, go out in the deep wilderness in the middle of nowhere, many miles away from the nearest humans. This is the tough part: dig a very deep and wide hole for a good old fashioned pit trap. To hold a full grown squatch without it being able to escape, the pit would probably need to be at least thirty feet deep and wide enough so that it couldn't possibly pull itself out using narrow sides.

Once the pit is dug (perhaps by a bigfoot team over the course of a few days), it has to be carefully concealed with leaves and branches so that it is imperceptible, and everything that was touched by a human has to be covered with deer scent or something along those lines.

Now how to lure a squatch to the trap. Since sasquatches are believed to use wood knocking as a form of long distance communication, a fairly loud looped recording of wood knocks is played near the pit. A looped recording played on a device that has enough battery power to play the wood knock sound for a few weeks straight. The player broadcasting the sound would also need to be entirely concealed so at to be invisible and covered with a scent to mask any human odor or plastic component smell.

If the broadcasting device is able to project the wood knocking sound for say a quarter mile or so, any sasquatch passing by will likely investigate the wood knocking. When the squatch gets close to the pit, wham! A specimen.

The bottom of the pit can be rigged with some type of device, again entirely concealed with a masked scent, that will send out a signal when something has fallen into the pit. If the pit is deep enough and wide enough, no squatch, no matter how tall or strong will be able to escape.

Once a squatch has been trapped in the pit (that would be scary, wouldn't it? Seeing a likely upset, ticked off sasquatch in a pit), it can be tranquilized, hoisted out, extensively photographed, and examined by scientists. Afterwards, a tracking device can be attached to the squatch, and it can be released.

  10. I have lived in NYC my entire life and never met one person that would want to call our state the "Garden State". All native NY'ers proudly refer to our state as the "Empire State". I also have several degrees, including dual undergrad, masters and a doctorate.

  11. For Anon. pit strategy. I like your idea, however your are far more apt to get other forest animals like deer, elk, moose, and smaller critters too.
The large animals would likely be seriously hurt or killed by the fall, and this would not be fair or ethical. Say that you did get a Sasquatch in the pit. Most likely its' mate, or another member of the group would bring a 40 foot tree to the site, and it would climb out.
Also if this was in the middle of government forest land, I'm pretty sure it would be illegal to build, therefore put it on private land.
    Just my thoughts.

  12. @Anonymous: perhaps you have not heard the news about The Big Apple's new nickname. What you might also be unaware of is that apples grow in gardens. Perhaps that is the main reason for the switch.

If you don't mind me pointing this out: it is considered gauche to draw attention to one's accomplishments. A true dual undergrad, masters and doctorate holder would never do such a thing.

You are on the right path, though: reading my lessons will no doubt improve your ability to reason. Although true brain power is a question of cubic capacity. I wear a hat size 8. As a close and dear friend of mine once wrote: "A man with so large a brain must have something in it."

  15. To the two of you talking about the pit trap method, you're crazy. It's obvious neither of you have ever used a spade before. Take it from someone who does everyday, it's impossible. Oh yeah, where are you planning to hide the 30 tonne of earth that's gonna come out.
On the other hand, you are right about doing something radical, one does need trapping.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I like the thought behind the pit trap idea, but it would be impractical. Someone needs to come up with a good way to trap/capture a sasquatch. As the guy with the pit trap idea mentioned, if bigfoot is real, then there must be a way to capture one.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah, use a snare instead of a pit. You can lure a sasquatch to a snare with the wood knock recording.
