The annual Sasquatch Conference is this weekend in Tyler, TX

The Texas Bigfoot Research Conservancy will gather this weekend, for the third consecutive year, in Tyler for the annual Texas Bigfoot Conference. People who believe in the existence of Sasquatch and other unexplained mysteries can hear about new research on a variety of topics.

Experts like Dr. Jeff Meldrum, Idaho State University associate professor of Anatomy and Anthropology, author of Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science, is expected to present evidence encountered in the field.

Bigfoot: Fact of folklore?

They are doctors and scientists. They teach and they put the bad guys in jail.

Some have defended our country on the battlefield while others grow crops in the fields back home. Armed with PhDs, GPSs, documented sightings and open minds, these men and women spend much of their non-working time investigating what they call one of the great natural enigmas of our day: the creature called the Sasquatch or Bigfoot.

The Texas Bigfoot Research Conservancy will gather this weekend, for the third consecutive year, in Tyler for the annual Texas Bigfoot Conference.

This group of approximately 40 people is comprised of dedicated professionals who bring their talents together to pursue education and research to test the hypothesis of a legendary “wildman” phenomenon in North America. Their literature states that the TBRC proposes that the source of the phenomenon is a biological entity, probably an unlisted large primate.

Their mission statement reads: “to investigate and conduct research regarding the existence of the unlisted primate species known as the sasquatch or bigfoot; to facilitate scientific, official and governmental recognition, conservation, and protection of the species and its habitat; and to help further factual education and understanding to the public regard ing the species, with a focus mainly in, but not necessarily limited to, the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.”

Before the jokes start or the rib pokes go around the room, take a look at the research and documentation of this group of professionals. A real learner never shuts off his mind to new possibilities.

Never before found civilizations have been discovered in the Amazon just within the past year.

Just this month Australian researchers have discovered a new species of dolphin in Port Phillip Bay and in the Gippsland Lakes on Australia’s southern coast. They have been proved to be genetically unique from dolphins anywhere else in the world.

Could there not be a primate walking on two legs living elusively in the Pineywoods of East Texas and beyond?

Local TBRC member and Tyler surgeon Dr. Kenneth Helmer has been interested since he saw the Patterson-Gimlin video from 1967 that shows a female Bigfoot creature walking along a sandy path. He was the speaker at this week’s Troup Rotary meeting.

Helmer says as he examined the footage scientifi cally, noting how the creature walked, position of her head and muscle definition, it truly caught his interest to be a part of a group that seriously investigates the possibility.

“Most people don’t take us seriously,” Helmer said. “And for mainstream people to believe (as we do) we’ll have to have a body.”

Helmer said only a very few of the members of TBRC claim to have actually seen the creature but that does not stop their efforts to collect data, samples and continue their scientific work to prove the hypothesis that there is, indeed, a giant ape-like creature within the deep forests of this region.

According to an interactive map at www.texasbigfoot.com, two sightings have been documented in this area. One was dated June 2001 where three teens reported seeing an unknown creature near Blackhawk Creek and another encounter was reported in February 2002 in Smith County.

Others who share Helmer’s investigative mindset as well as the curious are invited to attend this weekend’s conference.

Caldwell Auditorium in Tyler is the location of the conference on Saturday, Oct. 1. There is also an evening banquet, held at the Discovery Science Place at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $25 and up depending on the package purchased. Discounts are available for students, educators and active military.
