Texas Bigfoot Takes Center Stage

Cryptid expert Lyle Blackburn is coming to Dallas to talk about the long history of bigfoot encounters in Texas.

Bigfoot sightings have long been a part of Texas lore and legend. In fact, even our own Davy Crockett told of an encounter with a creature in 1836. On his way to the Alamo, Davy claimed to have seen an eight-foot-tall creature entirely covered in fur with rows of broken teeth. Davy said that the creature even spoke to him warning him to leave Texas. Surely we can trust the words of our state hero!

As far back as Texas has been Texas (was there a time before Texas?), tales of what we think of as Bigfoot have been passed down and told around campfires. Every native tribe in the Lonestar State has their own tales and accounts. The Cherokee called it the Kecleh-Kudleh. Other tribes had names like Lofa, Na’in, and Oma. If any place on this planet could harbor such creatures, it’s our great state.

There were many vivid newspaper accounts of Bigfoot sightings, along with bigfoot-related hysteria the 1960s and 1970s. (Sorry, no Bigfoot photographs. Guess he’s camera-shy.) But there are currently more sightings coming from every corner of the state than ever before, though he is most likely to be seen in the Piney Woods region and occasionally in the Hill Country. Only the Pacific Northwest has more activity.
