Happy Memorial Day Bigfoot Footage

The Memorial Day Bigfoot Video

This video was filmed by Lori and Owen Pate in 1996 on Chopaka lake north Central Washington state. This video has been yet to be proven real or fake.

Before there was the Ketchikan Alaskan Bigfoot, or the Spokane River Bigfoot, there was another famous video that made it's way into the mainstream on this special Memorial Day holiday. Countless articles, blogs, and television shows have scrutinized the video, and has yet to prove whether it's real or fake. Just like it's grandmother Patty, from the infamous Patterson-Gimlin film, it has stood the test of time. It has been 15 years since the release of the video, and yet no scientific study, can conclusively prove it to be a hoax. That's what makes this one special.

The Memorial Day footage is a Hi-8mm video that is purported to show a Bigfoot. It was recorded on May 26, 1996, by Lori Pate at Okanogan County, Washington's Chopaka Laka while on a fishing trip with her family and friends. It is said to have been preceded by two sightings of an ape-like, hair covered figure at closer distances by others on the trip.

The footage shows a figure, matching the description of Bigfoot, running across a hill. It disappears behind a less inclined sloped area, then reappears briefly, walking, before going into a grouping of trees on the right side of the frame.

The location the film was shot was used in the documentary Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science. The filmmakers took forensic measurements to determine the subject's height, path, speed, and stride by measuring the subject against fixed objects in the background. Derek Prior, a three-time All-American sprinter from the University of Washington, runs the same route as the figure to determine if the alleged Bigfoot's running speed was too fast for a human to duplicate, to compare his speed and stride to the subject's, and to give a visual comparison to the figure in the footage.

In the conclusions section of Sasquatch, the results of the measurements give the creature a height of 5.3ft (1.61m), a leg length of 2.5ft (0.76 m), a running speed of 8.56mph (13.77km/h), and a stride of 4.25ft (1.29m). Prior, on the other hand, was able to run the same path at 17.1mph (27.51km/h) and had a stride of 6.8ft (2.07m).

However, one aspect of the film remained a mystery. At the end, before the subject goes into the trees, it appears to grow taller by 8 inches (20.32 cm). Explanations offered include that it's a real animal carrying a younger animal that had climbed higher on its back; or, alternatively, that it's a mask that was pushed back on the wearer's head while unaware that they were still on camera.
