These Photographs of Yeti FootPrints Were Taken Back in February

Photo of an apparent 'yeti footprint' taken 4000 metres
below Mardi Himal on Machapuchare last February.

New research by Dr. Bryan Sykes at Oxford University claims that they have finally solved the mystery of the Yeti. Tests on hair samples were found to have a genetic match with an ancient polar bear. Sykes believes the Abominable Snowman is "part polar bear and still roams the Himalayas". That specimen dates back at least 40,000 years ago, and probably as far back as 120,000 years - a time when the polar bear and the closely related brown bear were separating as different species. Though Sykes claims the Yeti is probably an ancient bear roaming Nepal, a few people have recently came back with evidence of footprints that look nothing like a bear.

On Wednesday, BBC Radio 4 received some photographs of "yeti footprints" sent in by Rick Bevan and taken by Captain Guy Norton of the Royal Gurkha Rifles. The prints appear to have toes and human-like strides:

    6. It's really interesting to note that the Bigfoot believers' reactions to Sykes' revelations is not to engage with the information itself but to obsess over what they perceived the skeptics' position to be concerning the evidence. It's becoming increasingly clear that the believers are much more concerned with people's perceptions of them rathern than with anything such as evidence or scientific opinion.

I'm starting to think that the believers place much much more value in finally being proved right rather than valuing things such as evidence, logic or good sense.

I've heard several skeptics claiming that they'd change their position if they were presented with sufficient quality evidence but I've never heard anything even remotely similar from a believer.

    1. LONDON (AP) — A British scientist says he may have solved the mystery of the Abominable Snowman — the elusive ape-like creature of the Himalayas. He thinks it's a bear.

DNA analysis conducted by Oxford University genetics professor Bryan Sykes suggests the creature, also known as the Yeti, is the descendant of an ancient polar bear.

Sykes compared DNA from hair samples taken from two Himalayan animals — identified by local people as Yetis — to a database of animal genomes. He found they shared a genetic fingerprint with a polar bear jawbone found in the Norwegian Arctic that is at least 40,000 years old.

Sykes said Thursday that the tests showed the creatures were not related to modern Himalayan bears but were direct descendants of the prehistoric animal.

He said, "it may be a new species, it may be a hybrid" between polar bears and brown bears.

"The next thing is go there and find one."

Sykes put out a call last year for museums, scientists and Yeti aficionados to share hair samples thought to be from the creature.

One of the samples he analyzed came from an alleged Yeti mummy in the Indian region of Ladakh, at the Western edge of the Himalayas, and was taken by a French mountaineer who was shown the corpse 40 years ago.

The other was a single hair found a decade ago in Bhutan, 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) to the east.

Sykes said the fact the hair samples were found so far apart, and so recently, suggests the members of the species are still alive.

"I can't imagine we managed to get samples from the only two 'snow bears' in the Himalayas," he said.

Finding a living creature could explain whether differences in appearance and behavior to other bears account for descriptions of the Yeti as a hairy hominid.

"The polar bear ingredient in their genomes may have changed their behavior so they act different, look different, maybe walk on two feet more often," he said.

Sykes' research has not been published, but he says he has submitted it for peer review. His findings will be broadcast Sunday in a television program on Britain's Channel 4.

Tom Gilbert, professor of paleogenomics at the Natural History Museum of Denmark, said Sykes' research provided a "reasonable explanation" for Yeti sightings.

"It's a lot easier to believe that than if he had found something else," said Gilbert, who was not involved in the study. "If he had said it's some kind of new primate, I'd want to see all the data."

Sykes' findings are unlikely to lay the myth of the Yeti to rest.

The Yeti or Abominmable Snowman is one of a number of legendary ape-like beasts — along with Sasquatch and Bigfoot — reputed to live in heavily forested or snowy mountains. Scientists are skeptical, but decades of eyewitness reports, blurry photos and stories have kept the legend alive.

"I do not think the study gives any comfort to Yeti-believers," David Frayer, a professor of biological anthropology at the University of Kansas, said in an email. But "no amount of scientific data will ever shake their belief."

"If (Sykes') motivation for doing the analyses is to refute the Yeti nonsense, then good luck," he said.

Sykes said he was simply trying "to inject some science into a rather murky field."

"The Yeti, the Bigfoot, is surrounded in myth and hoaxes," he said. "But you can't invent a DNA sequence from a hair."

Also I have noticed that footers are now bringing out the excuse that a negative result does not disprove bigfoot. Well this is downplaying the situation in a big way. When the best, yes the BEST samples, vetted by none other than the head of bigfoot meldrum, sworn to be from a bigfoot, come back as bear or other known animals then this unequivocally proves that footers are full of horse shit.

  7. One man's yeti DNA is a mislabeled GenBank's polar bear DNA. The Yeti DNA would never have been allowed to be entered in the database, if it was entered as Yeti DNA. The yahoo's that claimed it to be a polar bear, had only a limited number of known species from which to choose it's identity. Yeti was not a scientifically recognized known species at the time from which they could choose, and it still isn't. Therefore, they could not classify the DNA from the "jawbone of unknown origin" , as Yeti DNA. If they reclassified the DNA as Yeti DNA, then as scientists, they would be compelled to delete all record of it ever being there, from their entire database. That's how modern science works.

  14. Reality check -

You have not disproved Yeti by bear being sequenced as DNA.

You will not disprove Bigfoot, should known animals be sequenced as DNA.

Sykes... As has been outlined; is only as good as his samples.

Convenient that people should now look for as much closure as quickly as possible and suggest that these samples are 'the best this field has to offer'... The fact is, that you don't know much at all.

The plain and simple fact IS...

You still haven't debunked Bigfoot. Put that in your proverbial pipe and smoke it.

    Reality check served.

You are soooooooo desperate for closure right now. You people never managed to grasp this weeks ago but I have no problem with repeating myself as much as it takes.

Laughably... You do not disprove a species by finding a new one. This is pretty basic child's mental capacity level to understand. The only people who are claiming that the samples submitted were the best that this field has to offer... Is you people. Very obvious considering you require something so bad to back up your claims.

Now you are quite welcome to exaggerate what these results mean in an effort back up your claims... But you are merely behaving like children on a school yard by suggesting that a new species of bear, renders Bigfoot a fantasy. That is something that I'm sure most skeptics will tell you. It merely begs the question... What other species' remain hidden fro science in that region.

'The scientific method' would not use a new form of discovered bear to render a controversial species in Bigfoot a fantasy... Dermals, unknown primate DNA a transcribed language, ten thousand years of acknowledgement, footage... To suggest that a newly discovered bear means none of that is real, isn't particularly well thought through. A scientific method would investigate those sources I provided and not assume a new bear renders them insignificant.

But you maintain that science is right to now debunk Bigfoot because it has found a new species of bear?

    : )

Keep it up Tards... You're doing your theory group very proud. Just the way I like it.

    Schooled.

All this 'schooled' 'pwned' 'peace' bullshit makes me want to cringe myself inside out. Im now only a 20% beleiver. What Joe and MMg need to understand is that not all sceptics are trolls or non believers. You can still be a sceptic without being a dick, and i genuinely want to believe and have the existent of Bigfoot proven without a shadow of a doubt, but im gonna need more that word of mouth, eye witness accounts and foot prints. Im on your side, but i dont like it when you go on like you are some kind of forum god.

  19. PS> Joe, what do you think of Sasquatch Ontario's studies, sometimes i believe them and jump for joy, but the last few videos have had me cringing hard. So, genuine question, do you believe S.O.'s videos?? And if not, why not?
AlsoI know you are a great believer in the Leaping Russian Yeti video, and although i love watching it, i just don't believe it. If you say that 'they' are giant, hairy, people and giant apes...then why does the 'giant hair person' in the video act and move like an animal. Surely a 'person' wouldn't run, and jump, and run all fours like that. It looks and acts far more like an animal than anything else, what kind of animal (if it is animal) is it? I have no idea, but it doesn't demonstrate any kind of 'human' traits at all, not in my opinion anyway. So what are they, an undiscovered 8ft bi-pedal ape, or a giant hairy person? It can't be both.
I still think its a guy in a costume, and i even read somewhere that the two guys admitted it was a fake to get on some Russian TV show. I will try and find the link to it...I would love to hear your theories though mate...
And for the PFG, personally, after years of studying it and hearing all the back stories, i am now leaning towards a hoax. But even if it is, it doesn't disprove Bigfoot, it's just a great, if not the best hoax of all time, and that in itself it a great, fun achievement
Also, i have found some recent videos, where the costume looks VERY Patty like, it really changed my ideas, or maybe just confirmed them. I will post the photos later when i find them, one is a video and it looks very convincing and the costume looks exactly like Patty...
