This talk by David Paulides about Bigfoot being human and not an ape also explains why Dr. Melba Ketchum and the Erickson Project are involved

David Paulides and Scott Nelson

What does NABS, Dr. Melba Ketchum and the Erickson Project have to do with this video? This video is from the 2011 Bigfoot festival in Honobia OK and it could explain everything in one fell swoop.

Before you read on, you have to watch NABS (North American Bigfoot Search) executive director David Paulides and linguist expert Scott Nelson deliver their talk about Bigfoot from an angle that mainstream scientists so far have refused to touch. Listen to Paulides explain the difficulty in getting scientists to except his groups DNA findings.

So here's the deal: According to a survey from "Track Record" produced by Ray Crowe, NABS claimed that their DNA research indicated 95% of the Bigfoot samples came back as “Human.” Many researchers rejected their findings and claimed that human DNA must have either been compromised or contaminated and the results should be discounted. According to NABS, almost every noted researcher of Bigfoot proclaimed their results to be flawed.

The group believes that many researchers wrongly based their careers on the creature being an ape. Their recent findings suggested many books written by some of these researchers are probably in error. To right this wrong, they brought in Dr. Melba Ketchum:

NABS had the funding to make a sustained effort at the DNA issue. The effort started by locating the optimum location to test specimens. NABS interviewed several scientists. The interest level and competency ran the gamut. One person stood out amongst all others interviewed, Dr. Melba Ketchum of DNA Diagnostics. We explained what out Mission Statement was and our sincerity to keep this at a highly scientific level. NABS started this DNA study and we will be there when it completes. Dr. Ketchum stated she was interested and NABS sent her our first specimen, hair found on the Hoopa Reservation in Northern California.

Dr. Melba Ketchum

As part of the hair recovery and identification process, Dr. Ketchum employed the services of a hair and fiber expert that she had previously known through his expert courtroom testimony. This individual works for a prominent institution who allowed him to work our project and volunteer his time. This person reviews all hair samples and compares them to all known hair and fiber and ensures the samples meet the criteria for bigfoot / sasquatch / hairy man. He photographs the hair and then passes it onto Dr. Ketchum for DNA testing. If the specimen doesn’t pass the hair and fiber testing phase, it does not move onto DNA testing. It should be stated that bigfoot/sasquatch/hairy man hair has distinct physical features that does not match any known hair or fiber.

This next statement explains the nature of the Non-Disclosure Agreement produced by NABS. According to the statement below, it's clear they have total control over the releasing of data to the public:

Everyone involved in the DNA study that NABS started is locked into a non-disclosure agreement that does not allow any of the participants from releasing data to the public. We can tell you that the results are nearly completed. We can also tell you that there will be no other lab in the world that will get the results any sooner then what Dr. Ketchum and her team have accomplished. There have been major hurdles in the extraction and identification of the DNA and it was those hurdles that caused significant delay. It was Dr. Ketchum’s absolute commitment and persistence that overcame enormous technical issues that helped overcome DNA extraction issues. If it were not for the scientific acumen, persistent nature and dogged pursuit of answers by Dr. Ketchum and her team, we doubt these answers would ever be forthcoming in the months ahead.

When test results on all samples are completed, Dr. Ketchum and her team are going to present a scientific white paper to a noted journal for peer review. These journals do not accept papers for review when the results had previously been released to the public, they must first be presented to the journal. The journal reviews the findings that are submitted and then either accepts the document for publication or rejects it. All involved in this project believe the peer review process will eliminate many of the doubters and force scientific institutions to take the topic seriously and dedicate funds for additional research.

Please don’t think that NABS has been waiting on the sidelines while Dr. Ketchum and her team conduct DNA testing. We have been submitting additional samples for testing and, we are working on a monolithic project that is fascinating, evolving and will shock many people outside of the bigfoot world. No, this project did not evolve from the DNA study, it is different, very different from anything any other group has ever attempted. You will hear more about our ongoing efforts in the future.

***Please do not contact Dr. Ketchum directly with any questions or samples. She is overwhelmed with completing the project and would prefer you direct any questions through NABS. If you have samples that are interested in submitting, send us an email and we will review the request. All submissions submitted after February 15, 2011 will be placed on hold until after the white paper is submitted.

Shortly after NABS posted the statement above, the Erickson Project stepped into the picture. According to R.W. Ridley, this was the information NABS sent him regarding the Erickson Project:

In a past blog you had used the word “Erickson Project.” For clarity purposes, North America Bigfoot search did a due diligence search and found Dr. Ketchum and utilized her to start a DNA project for us. We worked with her for many months on several specimens, she was not working with anyone else at that time. Dr. Ketchum and NABS decided we wanted a cross section of samples from North America and David Paulides and Dr. Ketchum went onto Coast to Coast radio and solicited others who had bigfoot samples to participate in our study at no cost to them. Erickson along with dozens of others (Individuals and Research Groups) listened to that show and started to participate.

As of late, the focus of the attention seems to be pointing towards Dr. Melba Ketchum. The frustration comes from the intricacies of the peer review process Dr. Ketchum have been enduring. This is understandable. However, the perplexing nature of the non-disclosure agreement can be traced back to NABS and does not lie squarely on Dr. Ketchum's shoulder alone.

Comments

  1. Something seems very off on the DNA stuff. T is my understanding that we ought to be able to identify DNA that is NOT human. Therefore, if it comes back as HUMAN, it is highly probable that it is contamination since this is not uncommon. To say it is a human like animal is a big stretch. Maybe I have this incorrect. I don't buy what these "project" guys have to say. I only want it from a reputable peer reviewed source. With all the difficulties, this will be difficult to replicate. I don't hold out much hope this will go anywhere.

  2. It's true that Paulides keeps using the term "human". He reportedly doesn't believe in evolution which means he has no other word for another species in the homo genus.

  4. Perhaps there is not a marked difference in the number of chromosomes or important human gene markers. I think the HAR and FOX genes are unique to H.sapien (and H.sapien neanderthal?) If that is the case, then statistics must be applied to variations in these genomes across many samples and place the Sasquatch in either a separate species within the genus Homo, or a sub-species, or even race (haplotype) of H. sapien ? I confess a limited/simple view (perhaps even inaccurate...correct me anyone) of modern genomics..

However, this blog is as good as it gets to share this little gem...an article on the transfer of knowledge from amateur BFers to scientists based on history of Krantz? Just the abstract...very interesting. So, perhaps we should not begrudge these guys their unabashed bragging and forgetfulness of all those who have contributed to our understanding (and endured our passionate pursuits) of BFs!

A good Nature/National Geo endorsed bump could propel the funding into academia and away from amateurs...
That doesn't mean we can't influence what boundaries scientist must recognize... our focus as amateur researchers should be: exactly what does make sense for us to live and let live with Sasquatch. it might mean even placing appropriate boundaries on amateur Sasquatch interactions.... or not? Just one of the many questions that we can address. The sun might be coming up and ending the glamorous BF night hunts. We can hope.

    Abstract

Physical anthropologist Grover Krantz (1931-2002) spent his career arguing that the anomalous North American primate called Sasquatch was a living animal. He attempted to prove the creature's existence by applying to the problem the techniques of physical anthropology: methodologies and theoretical models that were outside the experience of the amateur enthusiasts who dominated the field of anomalous primate studies. For his efforts, he was dismissed or ignored by academics who viewed the Sasquatch, also commonly called Bigfoot, as at best a relic of folklore and at worst a hoax, and Krantz's project as having dubious value. Krantz also received a negative reaction from amateur Sasquatch researchers, some of whom threatened and abused him. His career is best situated therefore as part of the discussion about the historical relationship between amateur naturalists and professional scientists. The literature on this relationship articulates a combining/displacement process: when a knowledge domain that has potential for contributions to science is created by amateurs, it will eventually combine with and then be taken over by professionals, with the result that amateur leadership is displaced. This paper contributes to that discussion by showing the process at work in Krantz's failed attempt to legitimize Bigfoot research by removing it from the amateur sphere and repositioning it in the professional world of anthropology.

  6. There is a great video of a talk btw Rene D. and Peter Byrne in the late 60's(? I am have names wrong) somewhere on one of the many BF sites.....and the frustration btw the two as they debate ape/human and kill/no kill is an old story and moving.
There has always been a Human/Ape split among researchers. In the 1970's Robert Morgan wrote The Bigfoot Observers Field Guide..in which he advances methods (posted recently on NABS and BFRO as their seemingly novel discovery).. like putting away the camo and waiting patiently, using music, etc.. I loved Morgan's comment: "They are not thieves." They have many human attributes, both physically and mentally...anyway
If Paulides wonders why he is attacked (as he complains in the talk) perhaps just a bit more honesty about the work of others who have contributed would diminish that response from others. It was my understanding he is working on a third book and started a new website called Sasquatch Genome Project, not the actions of someone leaving the Bf field.

  7. Fantastic post! I can't imagine that we're talking about 100% human. There has to be enough variables in the DNA that it can grow so massive, have such odd proportions and be hair covered. The problem with all of this is that the way in which DNA is captured and taken to lab is not as meticulous as it is in law enforcement, so you never really know what you're dealing with. I've always assumed it's much closer to humans than apes, but I do believe it shows some more ape-like characteristics.

  8. When completing DNA testing, scientists will look for sequencing. When the DNA sequence comes back as human, they simply assume human. If the submitted sample for testing is labeled as a possible sasquatch sample, scientists will automatically list the sample as contaminated. This is primarily due to the fact that there are no known sasquatch DNA samples on record to go by. Most scientists will not stick their neck out and say, "this is sasquatch DNA that closely resembles a human." They usually will simply say, "The sample was contaminated with human DNA during the collection process" to cover their professional butts.

  9. In the Bigfoot world, things tend to happen very quickly. Record footage, edit it, post it on Youtube. New evidence is usually available for popular viewing within hours to days.

This is certainly not the case in the scientific world. Research takes years and ample patience in order to either be published and/or considered credible. It comes as no surprise that Dr. Ketchum's research is taking some time to be reviewed (and coming from someone who has actually been involved in formal research and publishing, peer review is the gold standard of providing your research with credibility).

I actually greatly admire Dr. Ketchum for what she is attempted to accomplish. I don't think people realize that, by conducting this research, her entire career is at stake. Its a known fact that mainstream science does not take Sasquatch seriously; a sad fact that has been created by all the hoaxes and fake evidence presented over the years. Not only is Dr. Ketchum taking all the submitted evidence very seriously, but she's dedicating her time and her lab for the sake of this research. The NDA's come as no surprise because, as we've all seen in the BF community, information gets announced before it can be solidified and proven. If all of her research were to be leaked before it was published, the entire project would lose credibility in the peer review process, thus leading mainstream science to yet again denounce the whole ordeal as a hoax.

This isn't something that's going to be published tomorrow. In fact, it may be some time before we see headlines about the discovery of a new species. But that's a GOOD thing! Sensationalism isn't going to prove the existence of Sasquatch. Just look at the Georgia Boys. I know I'm just as excited as everyone else to find out the results of this study. However, in order for all the information to be accepted, the researchers have to play by the rules, and that includes not discussing the data until its published.

  10. I am really excited about the release of the DNA info and hope it's soon. I am getting tired of waiting. I suspect that Dr. Ketchum's work is ready to go but is having problems trying to get peers to review it and possibly some are afraid to give it their "stamp of approval".
Either that or she has emmassed so much data that it's taking her peers very long to read through it all.
I just want to see the data released.
You have to remember there will be a lot of skeptics wearing eggs on their face once it's released. That part will be nice and worth the weight!

  11. I'm fascinated by the idea that they might be human, but it raises more questions than answers. Even if they started as (very) large boned Native Americans from a specific tribe, then how did they (de)volve into these more animalistic peoples?

Why would they give up fire, tools, clothing, shelters? If that theory is correct, any tribe would have had some contact with other tribes that used these things. If they know language, sit around the edges of other Native American dances etc, and are familiar with those peoples, then why would they just run to the forest and tear deer apart, sleep in the dirt? With all the face-to-face sightings, why would nobody recognize another human as such? What about the conical heads? The different bone structure in the feet?

We're not talking about thousands of years here, Paulides is talking about Native Americans knowing this tribe since the 1920's? I'm not able to make that kind of leap.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The idea that sasquatch are human is ridiculous. Almost all of the eyewitness accounts describe the sasquatch as apelike in appearance. If they are apelike, they are not humans.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Please refer to my guest posting for insight as to how this might be possible. Human .....No. Hybrid....Yes!

  14. I'm remaining cautiously optimistic on the findings. There is so much smoke and mirrors going on.I think we're intentionally being tossed a morsel here and there.Sometimes in the right direction, and sometimes in the wrong direction. It's like being on a merry-go-round full of see-saws.
As far as Bigfoot being tall Indians....I can't buy it.I just can't see a tribe devolving that quickly, not to mention being 7-10 feet tall.

I personally think Bigfoot is somewhere between ape and human.Maybe they are a species previously thought to be extinct.Who knows.
Everybody can speculate and everybody can provide statistics to show favour for a given theory.
It's an interesting ride so far.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Humans are apes. Silly debate.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Wouldn't Bigfoot fall somewhere in the "evolutionary bush" of the genus Homo?

The genome projects indicate modern humans (with some exceptions) share a small percentage of Neanderthal DNA,. I think that supports a double migration out of Africa theory also.

We know H. erectus, Neanderthal and Sapien lived concurrently and fossils are found at specific sites together. Some evidence indicates H. sapien may have been eating H. erectus and/or Neanderthal.

Given our shared Neanderthal DNA and that, as yet, H.erectus DNA is unknown (it might be "human" too) it seems that the definition of human might be a moving target, genetically anyway. Culturally it seems more obvious.

Given Wild Hairy Giant reports exceed the geographic scope and history of Native American oral traditions and extend around the globe and into ancient history it seems a division in the genetic branching occurred a long time ago and yet recent in evolutionary timelines..say 150,000ybp or less.

So, Sasquatches might be genetically falling in the genus Homo and species sapien and yet be quite different too, rising to a sub species or such. I think there is still debate if Neanderthal is it's own species or a sub-species of H.sapien.
    .
I also thought many tribes believe the Sasquatch were here first and the idea they are a brother goes further back to a distant past..to creation times when Sasquatches chose a different path than the "First People" who chose material and social culture.

So, the NA oral tradition that BF's lived among the NA as "humans" might be within their isolated cultural context...stone age essentially, until the arrival of the Europeans.

Really, not too much difference btw a modern human living in the stone age and a Sasquatch apparent habit. Relying too heavily on oral tradition that Bigfoots are human in the scientific sense might be a mistake of the same order as dismissing NA accounts all together.

Maybe Paulides overstates his case b/c of the history of the BF Research community and the strength of the "Ape" proponents arguments and attention.

If it turns out that the DNA fits within the variation of the species H. sapien sapien..well then, the BF Researchers world will remain unproven...so there must be something statistically different to point at and say, this is a unique group. Alternatively, perhaps Paulides samples are Native American.

  17. Paulides doesn't "believe" in evolution? I can't trust the opinion of anyone who doesn't accept the FACT of evolution on such an important issue.

BTW, I still don't believe in sasquatch. Convince me.

    1. More complete BS. I've followed NABS for 8 years, Paulides NEVER stated he didn't believe in evolution, grow up people!!

Paulides has stated that the creature is MORE human than animal, never stated it was 100% human. He stated that DNA testing has all showed HUMAN, people get their facts correct,

  18. Sasquatch is an ancient human, testing of samples from all over North America has found a specific DNA marker not seen before but now specific to this one creature. The testing has taken so long because being human it was imperative to show and prove through blind studies that the human markers were very close to modern humans but specific only to these ancient giant hairy creatures who roam North America. Science is not fast it takes time and lots of money to prove beyond a doubt that Monsters related to us are alive and well in the forests of America.

  25. This unknown people group is most likely the clas of Cain. The mark God gave Cain was a mutated gene.

9Then the Lord said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?"
"I know not," he replied. "Am I my brother's keeper?"
10Then He said, "What have you done? Your brother's blood cries out to Me from the ground! 11So now you are cursed [with alienation][37] from the ground that opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood you have shed. 12If you work the land, it will never again give you its yield. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth."
13But Cain answered the Lord, "My punishment[38] is too great to bear! 14Since You are banishing me today from the soil, and I must hide myself from Your presence and become a restless wanderer on the earth, whoever finds me will kill me."
15Then the Lord replied to him, "Therefore,[39] whosoever slayeth Cain vengeance will suffer vengeance seven times over. "[40] And the Lord set a Mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him. 16Then Cain went out from the Lord's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

Lamech mistakenly killed Cain, one anceint text states he looked like an animal.

However, this paucity of context did not stop a rabbinical tradition growing up around it. The Talmud and Midrash present an extensive legend, told, for example, by Rashi, in which Lamech first loses his sight from age, and had to be led by Tubal-Cain, the seventh generation from Cain. Tubal-Cain saw in the distance something that he first took for an animal, but it was actually Cain (still alive, due to the extensive life span of the antediluvians) whom Lamech had accidentally killed with an arrow. When they discovered who it was, Lamech, in sorrow, clapped his hands together, which (for an unclear reason) kills Tubal-Cain.
