The Infamous Michigan Dogman

From the Supernaturalist Channel: The Michigan Dogman

Wexford County, 1887. Two lumberjacks encounter what they assumed to be a big wolf or big dog but soon realized it was something else entirely. They described it as having the torso of a man but the head of a wolf or dog. They chased it with their guns until it hid inside a hollow log. The Dogman then let out an ear piercing howl and jumped out of the log before taking off out of sight.

When it comes to the Dogman phenomenon, not many sightings can live up to the popularity of The Michigan Dogman. He was described just like most dogman, tall, reaching at least 7 feet, amber colored eyes or blue eyes, fitting the description of most movie werewolves, except he’s no werewolf, merely a cryptid that resembles one. And like most dogman sightings, The Michigan Dogman can move at incredibly fast speeds on his hind legs. Their howls are said to be an unnatural noise, almost like a human scream mixed with a roar.

Of course there are legends about him, some from Native American Tribes in the area he’s spotted, the Ottawa-Chippewa Tribe and The Ho-Chunk Tribe each have their own legends. The Ottawa believe they are skin walkers stuck in between the forms they were shifting into while the Ho_Chunk believe they are visitors from another realm that can take physical form here. Some folks that live in the area say he’s allegedly seen in ten year cycles. Non-believers claim misidentification, some religious friends of my own claim he’s a demon. He’s been said to be a skin walker, a cryptid, an alien being, an undiscovered natural creatures, a visitor from another dimension entirely, even a hoax.

Sightings of the Michigan Dogman are as diverse as possible! Law Enforcement officials, every day people, hunters, farmers, adults, children, there’s no demographic that doesn’t have a representative in dogman encounters.

Being more of a Mulder than a Scully, I believe there is something out in the woods that is either being hidden from us or hiding from us on its own. There are just too many sightings all over the world for creatures like this to be one big elaborate hoax. Something is out in the woods, chances are you won’t ever find it in your life time, but then again, you might just be one of those unfortunate souls that emails me your encounter if you go out into the woods tonight.

Sightings of the Michigan Dogman usually take place around the Manistee National Forest, the shores of Lake Michigan and Kalamazoo, Michigan but they also migrate North into Wisconsin (like the beast of bray road) and South in Illinois. There have actually been more reported sightings of dogman type creatures then there have been Sasquatch sightings! As the sightings migrated from just Michigan and spread all over the country, most of their physical characteristics stayed the same while some minor aspects like the color of their fur and eyes have been reported to vary. This can easily be explained by migrating animals adapting to their environment.

Is there more than one dogman in the manistee national forest? Is there really a dogman in Kalamazoo? Is there a dogman of Lake Michigan?

While all upright canine sightings are undoubtedly traumatizing and horrifying, there isn’t one single account of a Dogman actually killing someone or seriously harming them physically, of course if one of these creatures mauled someone or ate them up, there wouldn’t really be any proof. So the jury is still out on that one as far as I’m concerned.

  2. A culture hopping conspiracy of gorilla suit wearing hoaxers? Not quite:

"How consistent are the Coast Salish descriptions of the creatures that fit the minimal description of the hypothetical hominid? As I have already indicated; they are not very consistent. Nocturnal habits are mentioned most often and where not mentioned it could be an accidental omission. Hair covering the body is not consistently mentioned and some descriptions seem to imply a more human covering. About half the descriptions mention the habit of stealing food, less than half the stealing of women and children. In some they speak but in others they camot speak but whistle. They may travel through water or avoid water. In one area they have unbending legs that allows them to run downhill only. In another they have spikes on their toes for kicking people. Some of them seem to have the rudiments of culture, others
do not."

    1. An interesting read and good points made. It's pretty obvious that posting traffic has diminished here and many will attribute that to trolls which I'm sure is true to an extent. However another side of the equation is there seems to be nothing of importance appearing here. I have thought this site to be the go to spot for any latest information on Bigfoot and it now mainly consists of stories and the same people producing nothing significant. For anything of this nature to sustain interest it needs reinforcing with more that suspect and circumstantial evidence and I have not seen that forthcoming. Using hand me down tales and customs as evidence of a creature existing will never suffice or satisfy those who are skeptical. One can call upon what they consider evidence but if it dated and no one qualified is interested in examining it then what good is it? Fresh evidence that has a possibility of grabbing major headlines is the best chance of Bigfoot gaining interest again. I think the Sykes DNA study was the last time that happened and nothing more seems to be forthcoming from him.

    2. To reel off various inconsistencies does by no means invalidate the actual consistencies which are plenty... Which the paper you linked to does pretty wonderfully at times. This is a typical smoke and mirrors tactic that pseudoscpetics enjoy. To elaborate... As westerners, we have all sorts of folklore, legends & mythology that were contemporary to accepted animals both extant and extinct, as well as historical events. Native Americans are no different... They have all sorts of quite beautiful though very obviously fantastically impossible myths about creatures, contemporary to events that are passed down in oral histories. The simple facts are, that for thousands of years, people from different cultures across the country, AND the world have been reporting the exact same tall hairy biped, which has been leaving enormous footprints all over the globe. Descriptions from people who wouldn’t be questioned regarding any other subject, that are consistent over thousands of years. Regardless of things like the Bukwus (a skeletal, long-haired wild man of Kwakiutl legend, largely misunderstood to be the Salishan Sasquatch, but the two creatures are extremely different), or the fire breathing dragon of medieval Europe that brave knights battled with chivalry... It has no bearing on the creatures that DO have consistency, and have physical evidence in the present to point to.

To address some of the points in the extract...
      • Most sightings reports occur in day time, leading plenty of researchers to refute the idea that they are nocturnal.
      • There have most certainly been a race of “giants” (7-8 feet tall and not biblical versions) in the US, as do the many documented archeological studies attest to. Whether these were hair covered or not will never really be known, but if not, and the hairy bipeds who lived contemporary to them outlived them to this day... Then you have proof of such legends regarding “more human covered” beings. The fact that such oral histories were contemporary to those of Sasq’ets, does nothing in any way shape or form to harm the latter.
      • The fact that half of these oral histories claim that these hominins steal food is expected, given general temperaments of different individuals, as well as circumstances that may render them opportunistic.
      • And as for woman and children being taken, according to Kathy Strain (an anthropologist employed as the Forest Heritage Resource and Tribal Relations Programs Manager for the Stanislaus National Forest, located in Sonora, California), though this indeed occurred, it is in fact men that were taken more than anything. She does state that nearly all the tribes in the US regarded them as cannibals, with a few tribes referring to them as a “brother”.
      • Choosing to speak or whistle is again consistent with current reports and is typical of a sentient wild human being able to choose the manner in which the communicate. And they may travel through water or not? Some people don’t always like the water see.

    3. Watch Standing, his claims that his movie is going to result in sasquatch being recognized is an extraordinary claim, put Meldrum and others in the equation along with a three Bigfoot standoff not to be believed and I think it will probably be the most groundbreaking effort since The Erickson Project. None other than Robert Lindsay thinks he had an active sasquatch location although we have to temper that with the fact that he was easily fooled by the likes of Dyer and Smeja, I'm looking forward to 10/27

    4. Hello Iktomi, I think 10/27 is going to verify all you've said, I hope it does, they're out there dammit

      Delete
    5. I keep meaning to reach out to a certain individual on Standing, Iktomi knows who, certain events have kept me busy in my own life but I feel something groundbreaking is truly coming, like I said look to 10/27 and we'll all see, also more gigantopithicus claims and I did glean some insider info on that a few years back

      Delete
    6. Todd Standing does not have a good reputation even among fellow believers in the Bigfoot community. There are many who question why Meldrum and Les Stroud even associate with him. I doubt anything groundbreaking will come from this documentary but it will be interesting to see what they got. I will be looking forward to 10/27 (release date?) as well.

    7. To sum up ikdummy’s argument:

Bigfoot claimed to be nocturnal: proof of bigfoot.
Bigfoot not claimed to be nocturnal: proof of bigfoot.

Bigfoot reported to be covered in hair: proof of bigfoot.
Bigfoot reported not to be covered in hair: proof of bigfoot.

Bigfoot said to steal food from humans: proof of bigfoot.
Bigfoot said not to steal food from human: proof of bigfoot.

Stories of bigfoot taking women and children: proof of bigfoot
Stories of bigfoot preferring to take men: proof of bigfoot.

Bigfoot said to speak instead of whistle: proof of bigfoot.
Bigfoot said to whistle instead of speak: proof of bigfoot.

Bigfoot travels through water: proof of bigfoot.
Bigfoot is afraid of water: proof of bigfoot.

    8. Um... No, dopey. And allow me to summarise;

What you essentially have... Are the temperaments & customs of a sentient wild human, that can think for itself and make choices. What’s proof of “Bigfoot” to many who understand how scientific evidence works, is the footprints that have anatomical consistency across continents. Something that your extract did nothing to address when considering it would require a culture hopping hoaxing conspiracy to achieve.

      ; )

    9. Um... No, dopey. Your first barrier is a study which would calculate the probability that there could be 10,000 8 foot tall hairy apemen in the US evading capture and definitive photographic proof for 6 decades. Until that study is provided, all your silliness is entertainment only.

      Delete
    10. I’d simply point to thousands of years of anthropological data, tens of thousands of eyewitnesses & 60 years of documented physical evidence. This means that the probability of 10,000 8 foot tall hairy apemen evading capture is as likely as it is factual that nobody has looked to field study or capture them yet. But it means little as to their actual existence, especially in light of the aforementioned evidence.

      Oh... “Bigfoot” was photograph in 1967;

There’s no moderation here anymore. You don’t have to publish arguments not even dense pseudosceptics would use just to get my attention, wait for a typing error and then insult me... You can just go ahead and insult me anyway. It’ll lessen the impact on your emotional issues in the long run.

    11. Posting links to non definitive photos of bigfoot is not definitive photographic proof of bigfoot. A basement dwelling rotten toothed Euro-queer using probability in a sentence is not a scientific study determining actual probability.

      Delete
    12. Nope... But posting links that source track impressions of the exact same foot anatomy of the exact same biped in a different continent, does though. Which pretty much makes those photos definitive. Even more so when you can reference experts like plastic surgeons who can point to biological tissue in said photos.
