Geez, Check Out All These Cryptids in the U.S.
Tyler Houck, the author of Tyler's Cryptozoo is apparently working on a book called Cryptid U.S. The book apparently delves into the various cryptids found around the United States, and Tyler gives us a preview of what's to come. Check it out:
"I'm currently working on a book on my google drive called Cryptid U.S.. Its about strange creatures seen in the United States, things like Bigfoot, Mothman, Champ in Lake Champlain, Werewolves(yes, werewolves), frog men, lizard men, the Jersey Devil, Black Panthers, and many other things. I'm about 60 pages in right now, on chapter 3, which is about flying monsters. I'm going to give some previews from some sections in the book, starting with good 'ol Bigfoot:
The giant, hairy, ape-like creatures known as Bigfoot or Sasquatch have been seen all over the U.S. since the first people came to America. There seems to be several types(if not separate species) of these creatures across the country. For example, Bigfoots seen in the Eastern part of the country and in the south seem to be a bit smaller and more aggressive than those in the pacific northwest. The Fouke Monster, seen near Fouke, Arkansas, has been known to attack humans. Bigfoot on the western side of the country tend to be tall and shy. They try to hide as soon as they see they have been spotted.
The top state for sightings of Bigfoot or Bigfoot-like creatures is California. The famous Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot film was shot in this state. Number two on the list for the most sightings in Washington and number three is Oregon. The other two states on the top five list are states people don’t often associate with Bigfoot. Number 4 is Ohio(where I live). The Ohio Bigfoot even has it’s own nickname, the Grassman. Florida, in the number five spot, also has it’s own Bigfoot called the Skunk Ape.
Those are the five best places to see Bigfoot, but there are some states where there have been very few sightings. Don’t even bother trying to find evidence of a Bigfoot in Hawaii. They just aren’t there. Delaware also has few sightings, along with Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Nebraska, Kansas, and the Dakotas. But, always remember, just because there aren’t many Bigfoot sightings in these states doesn’t mean the creatures are not there(except for Hawaii).
The Pacific Northwest has more Bigfoot sightings than anywhere else, and that is where we will start our journey into the Cryptid U.S."

ReplyDelete'I might as well add my story. Several years ago my Dad and I went to a place called Gore's Landing on the St. Johns river here in Florida. We used to get together every couple of months and camp out over night and just hang out together. Well this night we decided to just take my van and sleep in it instead of setting up a tent and dragging all the gear out there. We were sitting around the fire just talking and he said that he had not brought his gun. He never goes anywhere without his gun. I had left mine at the house because I figured he had brought his. Then neither one of us brought flashlights so if something did happen we could not see anything.
We were sitting around the fire just talking when 50' or so behind we heard something big moving through the bushes and palmettos. We both stopped and looked at each other regretting not having a flash light or a gun. I asked if he heard it too. I could tell by the look on his face he had. We both have grown up in the woods and know what a deer, armadillo, raccoon, or an opossum sound like. This was not anything like that. The worst part was it was just outside of our vision. Then it stopped. We were trying to see what it was but couldn't make anything out of the darkness. We started to walk toward the area and then whatever it was took off beside the river and JUMPED across the boat landing area, a good ten feet. I heard one foot hit the left side of the water and then another foot hit the right side and it took off into the woods. It was so big that you could feel the ground shake when it was running. It was definitely on 2 feet. I am 6' 2" and 230 lbs and I am not afraid to say I was scared ****less. My dad was pretty shook up and we decided it was best to get in the van for the night.
Later on that night about 2:00 AM we were laying in our sleeping bags when the most god awful scream woke us up. I sat up and asked my dad if he heard it. He said, "What do you think?" I was looking out of the windows trying to see what it was but couldn't see anything. I was trying not to crap myself but I decided I had to have a look at what it was. So I slowly opened the door to the van and stuck my head out to see if I could see something. Nothing. So I got out to get a better view and still nothing so I figured while I was up I would take a leak. I walk to the edge of the woods and start doing my business when all of a sudden something hairy touched my leg. I about screamed like a little girl when I turned around. There was a big dog that rubbed the back of my leg. I have no idea where he came from. I almost peed all over the front of my shorts trying to turn around and see what it was and almost had a heart attack. My dad and I laughed hard about that part.
But to this day I will never know what ran through the woods and I refuse to go out there without a gun to this day.'

DeleteAccording to the BFRO website Washington is #1 in sightings, California is #2 with Florida #3. Ohio is #4 with Oregon #6 behind Illinois is #5. The top 2 counties in the US for bigfoot sightings are Pierce and King, both right next to one another in Washington.

Hi guys, this is Tyler. To answer your question, a got my info about top states for Bigfoot sightings in Joedy Cook's book Beginners Guide to Bigfoot Research. I don't know if he or the BFRO website is right, but I'll check it out.

I've checked a few sources now, and this is what I've got.

I checked the BFRO, and what the first guy said was right.
And I checked http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Which_state_has_the_most_reported_bigfoot_sightings?#slide=4, which had this list:

And at another source:

#3. Oregon
#4. Ohio
#5. Texas
#6. Idaho
#7. Tennessee
#8. Michigan
#9. Pennsylvania
#10. North CArolina

But, that last source also says that Florida and Louisiana are some of the top 5 states for bigfoot sightings, which is wrong, because they both have a lot.
So there you go. Decide for yourself which state has the most Bigfoots. Sounds like the first guy just looked at the BFRO and assumed they were right.
Oklahoma also has a lot of sightings.
DeleteI looked at the BFRO because they tend to have more information than others because they are the largest organization. A BFRO investigator told me that they were at least 300 behind on Washington state sightings, which would put the state at over 800, at least by BFRO reports.
DeleteBut there are different sources and they do come up with different numbers, so it is interesting to see the difference between them. Also one has to wonder what standards are used to decide if a sighting is legitimate or not.
