Hey Guys, Please Understand That Kids Read This Blog Too
Look. We don't mind the trolling and the trash talking, but please understand that kids read this site too. You commenters can get your point across without using words that would put NBC out of business. The TV show Finding Bigfoot has brought in a lot of new readers, and some of them are children genuinely curious about Bigfoot.
If you got this message from a concerned parent, what would you do if you were us?
Hey Shawn
I have been a fan of your site for a long time. Since Finding Bigfoot has appeared on television More and More young Children have become interested in Bigfoot. My Daughter is a school teacher for autistic children and they love finding bigfoot. So i keep her up to date and she tells her student the latest news i read from your site. I admit i have posted a few funny comments in the blog because when i read them there just waiting to be answered (yes i'm guilty too). Recently my Daughter wanted to look at your site each day and read her students the latest but unfortunately i realized because of the serial bloggers and the comments it's not for everyone. Do the comments come from many different and new people or are there just a few bad apples that comment each day making it a site i can't refer to other people. I know you need the traffic to make the site feasible Have you thought about if they want to blog they have to register otherwise the blog does not show up for young eyes to see.

We will continue to let people comment anonymously but we are going to start temporarily banning (Potty Mouth Training) people who use some of the really crude language.Yes, we can ban anonymous commenters and we have done it before...so don't make me do it! ReplyDeleteI have had encounters at 5 different localities in the county I live in, all between 10 and 25 miles apart. I have no reason to think they are the same ones at these different localities. In fact they all did different things in these localities. I personally think they are a lot more common than people realize. I have a saying: "The hardest thing to do is to find something for the first time, once you have found it, it is everywhere."

This was the type of thing that keep me from posting more often. I would love to see more young people on this site. Some of the comments do bring the whole site down. Just to see the same people trash talk day after day. I think this turns alot of New people away.
Ken:I found this site by accident looking for info. The first time I posted, I was trashed I'm a big boy and I admit I sent back the same as I recieved. But I would not have ever visited again,nor would I have sent all my friends to this site if it had not been for the kindness of one regular guy who extended his help and support. He let me know that a few people on here actually were interested in something about the subject of Bigfoot, and not just trashing everyone they could. Good luck with the clean up, you should really thank those like H, Bandini, Big Jim, Rumy, and those folks you can actually talk to for all your New posters as well as anybody that returns after being trashed for just asking a question about the subject.Some of the people on here are hilarious, but they also stay away from trashing every new person that comes on. I enjoy your site and have gained some bigfoot knowledge too.thanks for the site, no more trash from me,I have kids too.

Yeah, I think that it is very appropriate and sometimes necessary for a comic relief statement every now and then. I must admit, makes reading these blogs more entertaining. But to take the example of Red Skelton, he was one of the funniest men and never used a bad word.

What they don't need to be exposed to, if they want to enter the professional world, is th kind of low class, low grade language and negativity that has been prevalent here for over a year. Most of the troll bloggers would get fired after one day of work in the professional world. Email/blogging protocol needs to be learned by kids. I couldn’t agree more anon8:16. Any responsible parent would explain to their kids that Bigfoot is a legend and doesn’t exist. I feel sorry for people who really believe Bigfoot is an actual creature and WASTE their lives searching for something they will never find. Spend your time with your wife, kids, family, friends,…this things do exist. Enjoy them to the fullest!

Used to be a quality discussion blog site, the blogs being as interesting as the news that Shawn posted. If you don't want your kids exposed to foul language and crass behavior I would suggest that Mike the concerned parent cut the internet and sat/cable tv and give your kids a few books on the subject. I think this site is great, maybe you should just put a warning up on the main page that informs people there is foul language being used, then it's up to them to continue to read the site.

What the hell kind of information are they supposed to gather from reading the comments? There's barely anything to be gained from reading the stories themselves. Here's a fake picture, here's a fake video, here's some noise, here's some prints, here's a radio show where they're going to talk about fake pictures and fake videos.

DeleteMigrate from Blogspot to Wordpress and you will be able to filter out (and moderate) the comments easily using plugins. Migration is pretty simple - you will be able to keep your content and comments, as well as subscribers, and will have much more flexibility.

I'd agree with you about that racist junk, but whenever Shawn posts Squatch Talk he does warn people bout the language, if parents are really worried pay more attention to what your kid is looking at online. Maybe if more parents spent more time moderating what they're kids are looking at then the rest of us wouldn't have to watch what we say.

DeleteActually it's not that frightening. I teach grade school aged kids and we read about bigfoot. What little kid doesn't love stories about the unknown, monsters, dragons, etc? And with the popularity of the show they hardly notice that I am teaching them the boring stuff like nouns, verbs, adjectives, sentence placement and so on. Why not let them read a topic they are interested in rather than Dick and Jane take a walk. The same core education is still there they are just doing it to a topic they think is cool so you can get their attention and keep it longer.

I have been screaming about turning the comments off completely for a while now... there is NO other reason for this behavior and constantly making the same post on how bigfoot doesn't exist on a bigfoot site. It's just not fair to all the people that take the subject seriously.

So you just want people on this site that only have one point of view? Where would the moderation stop? Would only habituators who claim to have gifting basket parties every Sunday be allowed to comment on here? If your beliefs in and arguments for the existance of Sasquatch can't stand up to someone's opposing views what does that say? Everybody on here talks about wanting debates about Bigfoot but debate requires two different views.

DeleteI think you are suffering from the effects of paranoia which may indicate other problems but lets just recap here, shawns saying cut the foul language there is no mention of debate and remember retaining your anonimity has a price.
No I was making a point to anon 12:10 who is insulted by people simply saying Bigfoot doesn't exist and wanted the comments section turned off. There shouldn't be a price to pay for anonymity and does it really matter what my name is especially when most of the names used on here aren't real ?
