NOAA Releases Public Statement Saying Mermaids Do Not Exist

The NOAA is no stranger to paranormal phenomena, but unlike many government agencies they have no problems addressing it and mermaids are no exception. On their website they have added a page about mermaid folklore to go along with their information pages regarding the Bermuda Triangle and Atlantis. They also included a statement that “No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found.”

This controversy came about after the showing of Animal Planet’s Mermaids:The Body Found documentary style show. The format of the show seemed realistic enough for many viewers to cause some confusion and require a little clarification from Discovery News:

"Though the filmmakers acknowledged that the film is science fiction, for many people it was indeed 'wildly convincing.' The show was an 'X-Files' type fanciful mix of state-of-the-art computer animation, historical fact, conspiracy theory and real and faked footage sprinkled with enough bits of scientific speculation and real science to make it seem plausible."

  4. I never cease to be amazed at how unbelievably dumb people are. The fact that a federal agency had to release a statement to this effect? What's next, "The American Dental Association has confirmed today that the Tooth Fairy does NOT exist"? Oy.
